Fellow practitioners, life is full of the pains of birth, aging, sickness and death, and we all get sick, without exception. Every pain must have a cause. From the perspective of Buddhism, the causes of diseases can be summed up in the following categories: The first is physical diseases. There are problems with our human body, such as the imbalance of the four major elements etc. These diseases require self-conditioning, or medicine and medical tools. Therefore, recuperate properly if you need to be recuperated; go to see a doctor if you need to; have surgery if you need to. This is the first category of diseases, physical diseases. The second is vengeful diseases. This is the haunting of your foe and karmic creditors from the past. It is said that "grudges should be resolved but not formed". With the view of mercy and the compassion of Buddhism, influence ghosts and spirits and your foe and karmic creditors. You observe that in the past you had grudges against them because you were ignorant and didn't know cause and effect. Now you meet the Triple Jewels and pray to resolve the grudges. I tell you fellow practitioners that, as Buddhist practitioners, we should not hold grudges with any sentient beings, not even with any animals. "Shurangama Sutra" specifically mentions that "people die and become sheep, and sheep die and become people." People eat lamb. After people die, they become sheep. After sheep die, they become people. People eat lamb again. From life to life, they eat each other again and again, and the cycle will never end. If you have this category of diseases, you can transfer your accumulated merits of reciting sutras, chanting Buddhas' names, and cultivation to your foe and karmic creditors. This is the best way to mediate. If they accept it, and if they are freed, then the problem will be solved; if they do not accept it, it may be that you are not sincere enough, or the grudges in the past are too deep, and there will still be trouble. This is the second kind, vengeful diseases. The third category is karmic diseases. This category of diseases is the most troublesome and the most difficult to treat. This category of diseases needs to be treated through the "repentance method", starting with "physical repentance", and then gradually enter into "theoretical repentance", no self, no others, no sentient beings, observe that all dharmas are empty, karmic powers you create are like illusions and unreal, and there's no eternal and unchanging self-nature. This is like what "Avatamsaka Sutra" states: "Sins start from minds so one repents one's mind, and when the mind is extinguished, the sins will also die. When the mind is extinguished, the sins are destroyed, and both are empty, this is called true repentance." As for karmic diseases, I tell you fellow practitioners, they are very deeply rooted. Unless you have the power of samadhi, unless auspicious signs appear when you repent, you see light, flowers, or Buddhas and Bodhisattvas coming to stroke your head and prophesy, then karmic diseases will be eliminated. Otherwise, they will be difficult to repent to eliminate. As Buddhist practitioners, if we encounter such karmic diseases, on the premise that they are not fully eliminated by our repentance, in our own minds, we must calmly accept them in full, and we must clearly know that the current karmic results are due to our evil karma created in the past. We now need to face them calmly, eliminate old karma following conditions, and must not create new evil karma. I tell you fellow practitioners that karmic diseases do not belong to physicality, nor do they belong to revenge karma. It's because we have created too much evil karma, which is accumulated from life to life. For this kind of diseases, medicine does not have any effect, and reciting, ritual repentance, and devotion may not have any effect either. Only through devout repentance, if you sincerely repent, can they be solved. In other words, we must practice the method of repentance with sincerity, and from then on, we must correct ourselves, correct our mistakes done in the past, and cultivate for our future. Do no evil deeds and do all good deeds, so that these karmic diseases can be eliminated. For the three categories of diseases I mentioned above, our fellow practitioners must treat them with the right medicine. When you're sick, you can't be like you don't know what disease it is, so you just treat it indiscriminately. We also can't treat all in the same way, so we must treat them separately. Physical ailments must be healed by physical medicine, mind diseases must be healed by spiritual medicine, and karmic diseases can be eliminated only by practicing the repentance method. We must find out the root causes of diseases. Only by finding out the root causes and solving roots of the problem, can we be able to solve it once and for all, and finally achieve the goal of curing the disease with medicine and restoring true and permanent health. In fact, the same is true of our practice. I found that after so many years of being a monk, I found that many lay people around me practiced blindly, today they practice this and tomorrow they practice that. They chant Buddhas today, recite mantras tomorrow, and practice other methods the day after. Not having one method to keep practicing is the problem. I tell you fellow practitioners that you can talk nonsense, but you can't take medicine indiscriminately. This is like what is said in "Medicine Buddha Repentance": "Treat beings according to their diseases and prescribe corresponding medicine." We all know that the Buddha is the supreme medical king. The methods taught by the Buddha are countless and boundless, and the medicines prescribed by the Buddha are so many. But each of us has a different root, and each of us suffers from different diseases. We must find the right prescriptions and take the right medicine. Otherwise, not only does it have no effect, but sometimes there are side effects. Some of our fellow practitioners have been studying Buddhism for a long time, but why haven't you achieved anything or benefited? Then you have to reflect on it carefully: check to see what your root is, what diseases you are suffering from, and what kind of medicine you should take. We need to reflect carefully. Check to see if the method you are practicing is right for you and whether the medicine you take every day is just right. Because if you take too much medicine, I tell you, you can't absorb and digest it. If you take too little, then this medicine will not have any effect on you. Finally, I pray that Medicine Tathagata will bless everyone to be both physically and spiritually healthy. Take refuge in Medicine Lapis Light Tathagata!
