I think one of the key aspects is that FZero 99 isn't just about getting to the front of the pack and staying there, it's about surviving the race, and then improving your position as much as possible. In that light, it's more engaging than your typical racing game that has no interaction with the pack. It has solved the problem of "How do we make being in first place different than playing a single-player game." In FZero 99, having to risk your life to get an advantage that doesn't exist amidst the frontrunners is that engagement.

Yeah it’s amazing how the simple dynamics they plugged in make it so engaging. Even when you have the least “fair” condition of someone dominating in first, you can be sure they’re keeping themselves an inch from death to do it, and there are ways for people to take them down. There’s no “it’s impossible for them to lose” until the very last homestretch, and there’s no significant “bagging” because there wouldn’t be enough extra time on the skyway to justify going slower or not taking out other racers instead.

I think that is the game's best part! It effectively makes the skill floor lower simply by presenting how well you did in a different way. It also allows the skill ceiling to be much higher as being first is still possible but it's not presented as what's expected of you. This is something I'd love to see in more racing games, also when it's not online multiplayer.
@caioleite5579 Жыл бұрын
That is true. In my first races, I could barely finish lower than 50. Now I consistently do it, and it is satisfying, even if there is still much more to improve
@PauLtus_B Жыл бұрын
@@caioleite5579 It's really great! I think it shows a good reason not to have general ranked matchmaking (just the rivals does a fine job at that). It's really hard to do well at the game, but as even finishing the game isn't guaranteed, the bar for feeling you've achieved something is very low. You can really feel your own progression, as you steadily get higher and higher up the ranks. The goal used to be survival, then top 50, now it's top 25. Right now it's incredibly exciting if I'm in the top 10, regardless if I end the race there. The game has a pretty perfect difficulty curve because of it.

One more point that you didn't touch on in terms of unfairness, but the person in 1st place has to deal with an onslaught more of red and grey bumper cars than everyone else behind them. And they endless spawn in front of them. It means that even if you are an F-Zero god and memorized all the tracks and all the optimal turns, the game is still dynamic enough that you are always on your toes and always have to make adjustments to keep your position. This is the reason why 1st place is rarely ever far ahead of the rest of the pack. Because they have their own "war" to fight that is different from the rest of the players. It creates this system where the players in the back are constantly being pushed forward by using the sparks, and the players in the front are being pushed backwards by the army of enemy bumpers. Really smart design!

I remember in one match I managed to reach first in the final lap and hold onto it for half the track, but then I went for a boost that T-boned me into a red car that blew me off the track, tragically ending my run. Actually trying to hold onto first is exhilaratingly stressful with how many obstacles the game throws in front of you, and it's a night and day difference compared to mario kart (where as long as you manage items properly you kinda just get the occasional blue shell and lightning and little more to stop you from frontrunning).

I love that bad players being boosted to right behind the best players is accurate to the original game. You couldn't outlap the other cars in the SNES game, they were designed to always be right behind you. I think the best way to word it is that in f-zero 99, the best player won't always win, but a really good player CAN prevent themselves from losing by playing well. because while any mistakes are insanely punishing and the game is just more challenging for the player in front due to the bomb cars, a really good player will be able to avoid making those mistakes and get 1st fairly consistently.

that first joke was so eye-roll worthy yet it looped back to being hilarious Also I don't view the sky way mechanic as being inherently just a way to reward subpar players. But also a strategic layer added on top. It's not just about being the purely fastest, or else the purely fastest vehicle would win, but also collecting the points from the interactions with other racers. It really adds to the "99" aspect of it. It's not like someone in 50th can go ahead that much with the sky way, so I really take issue to the skyway mechanic being distilled to just "a reward for subpar players".
@weebnerdgaming4908 Жыл бұрын
Rather than “unfair”, it’s more like an equalizer. Players want to win, but game developers want people to have fun as equally as they can. The fly boost thing functions similarly to blue shell in Mario Kart. Blue shell can only be in the item pool if you’re behind enough. It functions both ways: it gives the player at the very front a tangible threat from behind, and it gives the player at the back a fighting chance. It minimizes the dull moment of no conflict. It’s just, unlike the blue shell, the annoyance effect for the winning racer is not immediate and sure fire :p

What a great video. Another thing I could note to you is that knocking out other players and gray bumpers gives you boost power and extends the bar, meaning staying in the crowd is also rewarding as you would be able to survive and boost longer.

Skyway was the key to all of this. The health mechanic or even large number of players (albeit 20 or so) was already present in older games. F-Zero might've struggled to differentiate themselves Mario Kart in the past, but taking a little bit of queue from them (namely Bullet Bill) was the last piece the series was missing.

F-Zero 99 highlights all the good things about F-Zero while also making all the negative things about it(the possibility of blowing up, namely) feel like a side effect that's more understandable. I think if they want to make F-Zero more popular, a couple big changes they could implement are having more people on screen than before(say, up to 50 for online play, but typically 32 for solo play), and also make everyone's health pool a lot larger. It sucks starting a race and being instantly nuked to 50% because a couple bots decided to smash into you while they attempt to get into their optimal lines. And also keep that skyway option available, while also giving first place harder obstacles the longer they stay in first place. The goal in every racing game should be the struggle for first place, and all too often I see it instead become a struggle for second place, because first place is so far ahead and everyone else would rather gun for your second-place neck, rather than save the fight for later and cooperate to take out first place. I've always loved the tradeoff for boosting through using your health. It feels like an actual risk v reward, instead of other games where the risk is negligible and the reward is too good to pass up. You can boost now to get an edge, but will you be able to survive until the next health panel? Can you even get a decent amount of health back?

@hogmild Жыл бұрын
Best advice at your point is to get really attuned to your chosen vehicle. Once you get a feel of the driving mechanics and get naturally better from repeating race tracks you can then start to think more strategically when competing with other racers. I main Wild Goose and just won my first race (on Silence of all tracks) and came third overall in the GP ranking. It wasn't easy but once I felt confident in my chosen machine, I was able to utilise WGs perks to its advantage and got better at racing more offensively, defensivly and also had a better handle on resource management and survivability. But overall just have fun with it. FZero 99 does a pretty good job at equalising the playing field so don't feel too bad about 27th tho, that's still better than the 72 other players!

I’m glad F-Zero 99 exists and can get people into the series. I just really hope Nintendo does a mainline game well. I’m honestly just a bit scared of Nintendo handling a new F-Zero game. Nintendo hasn’t directly developed an F-Zero game, besides 99, since X on the N64. And arguably the best F-Zero game GX was developed by Amusement Vision who worked with Sega. I just want a pure f-zero racing game for the modern day, if they wanted to include online and a 99 mode I’d be fine with that. I’m just scared they’d add stuff that doesn’t mesh well with F-Zero, like how Mario Tennis had annoying fighting game mechanics with the racket breaking, and the “racing game” mode the pushed so heavily in Mario Golf.
@esmooth91910 ай бұрын
0:12 however, you failed to mention that F-Zero 99 also punishes worse gameplay swiftly and decisively, because if you are far enough behind in the race, *_below the safe rank_* for an extended period of time, the game will literally *_yoink_* you out of the race, causing you to be disqualified, especially in the case of a Grand Prix. In this regard, It would behoove you to stay ahead of the pack.

Another important thing is that the part of the game hyped up as the "main event", the big skill expression, the Grand Prix, is five races in a row with steadily decreasing margin for error. This helps smooth out the fairness concerns, as someone who performs consistently will still end up ahead of someone who gets an "undeserved" high placing in one of the races. Leaderboards counting every grand prix for a week amplifies this, making it much more likely that the people at the top are the ones playing the best.

I have only 1 problem with the game: red bumpers On the track there are 3 types of bumper cars: gray, red and blue Gray is simple, it will obscure the track, possibly messing people up, but after a few hits they can be KO'd for an increase of max energy and a refill equal to the increase (unlike when you KO a player, where all of your power is refilled) Blue is a "Lucky Bumper", a way for eliminated players to continue playing by disrupting enemies and scoring a few points on the way Red bumpers explode on contact, heavily disrupting a player's momentum and draining a lot of energy, often leading to a death Fuck red bumpers, the track is already a clusterfuck, we don't need more shit on the track (i can forgive the gray bumpers, because it's a way for less skilled players to get KO's, and the increase to max power is really helpful in grand prix and mini prix modes, where kills from one race carry over to the rest
@emblemblade9245 Жыл бұрын
Red bumpers spawn way more in front, giving first place and frontrunners an added element to overcome since there’s no items you can use to bring them down like in mario kart. Also! Spinning when you hit them means you won’t take damage.

F-zero 99 does a lot of little things extremely well that you don’t always consider. For example, the rank out system not only makes a thrilling experience for players in the back of the race who just want to finish, it also is a brilliant way of making sure races finish quickly. If you wanna troll everyone and extend the race by doing something like driving backwards, you’ll just rank out and not waste anyone’s time. The skyway is a catch up mechanic, but it will very rarely put you in first place, and even when it does, it’s not by very much. It’s also purely a catch up mechanic that rewards players in the back without punishing players in the front. If you lose when you’re in front, it’s because someone else played better, not because you got 500 blue shells right before you finished. Out of all the 99 games, this one feels like it’s what the original game might have been if the technology had existed for it at the time. It’s just pure chaos but skill does generally still win out. The short races makes crashing out feel less frustrating. Also, getting to play as a bumper when you crash out is a hilarious way of letting players extract revenge after failing. They even made crashing out really fun! The health/boost bar being the same pool is absolute genius. This one I think people recognize, but it can’t be overstated because it makes every boost a gamble between risk and reward. The Grand Prix is just fun, and the rivals system is a nice way of grouping similarly skilled people together and giving you personal goals, even if you aren’t good enough to win a race.

The thing about F-Zero 99 is that none of the catch-up mechanisms are actually 'unfair'. The spark collection mechanic actually mirrors IRL racing, and it's called "drafting" in where cars will race behind another one which puts less stress on the car behind as the one in front has to spend more fuel pushing air out of the way; so in both F-Zero 99 and IRL racing people have a reason to not be fighting for first place until the final lap. The skyway itself is also incredibly balanced: It will almost never put anyone into first place except in very specific conditions. The reason for this is simple: The further back you are the longer the boost lasts. If you activate it near the front of the pack it will wear off almost immediately. Also because the same button uses the boost as well as the skyway, and you can't collect more sparks while it's full; it adds an extra layer of strategy to its usage: Use it immediately so you can go back to collecting more sparks, or hold on it it for a short cut, or hold on it it because you're low on healthy anyway, or hold on to it to use on the last lap to skip all of the bumper cars. Which leads to the 'first place problem' in where the game becomes single player, which does have the ingenious solution of having the front cars having to deal with the most red and grey bumper cars. People in first have to boost till their health is almost gone, but they also have to deal with the most explosive cars; one bad turn you'll find yourself bouncing off a bumper car into the walls and exploding, or being destroyed because you couldn't drive around the red ones. This system is brilliant because it's all about the player's own ability at weaving through the bumpers, there's not feeling of rage caused because someone from behind shot you with a blue shell right before the finish line. It's literally 100% skill to hold on to first place, and you have no one to blame but yourself if run into something while you're in first. Additionally if you slow down you KNOW that the 2nd place guy will take advantage of any hesitation on your end and try and bump you out the race anyways.

I stopped playing this game after a couple weeks. Sure, it was fun. But it has gotten to the point where you almost always run into one or more of the truly HARDCORE players in a lobby, and you pretty much have no shot of getting 1st place and can only hope for MAYBE a Top 10 finish, which I've done plenty of times. I, personally, have yet to win 1st place in any race on any track. Though not for lack of trying. Like I said, I've finished Top 10 in races plenty of times, and have no problem placing in the Top 10 in a 5-race Grand Prix. But for me, coming to the realization that, despite my best efforts, I've yet to win 1st place in a race, and probably never will, just kills the motivation to play the game altogether. Now, once that feeling of helplessness starts happening to others and they lose the motivation to play the game, only the most hardcore of the hardcore will remain. So, unless something is done to help retain the beginner / below average / average / decent players, the game will die. Slowly.....but it will eventually die.

I think the point you are missing is that even if you are a good player, it's hard for you to overtake positions in the race due to all the cars clashing alongside with you, which constantly nibbles your speed and threatens KO if you spend too much energy. Therefore, Skyway is there as a compensation for that bottlenecking issue, as it's generally easier to drive faster as the first spot than it is as someone in the middle of the pack. So I wouldn't say Skyway is unfair, because being 1st is still better. What is actually unfair is a Mario Kart track that has "bagging" as the optimal way to play it.

Actually what it means is that most positions can be recovered from, granted you play well. If you don’t use that skybridge effectively, it’ll put you up 20 spots before you crash and fall behind another 30. If you use the skybridge in the optimal spot, determined by either insane luck or precise skill. This means that the game is entirely fair, by cancelling out the actual unfairness. You see, the only luck in this game is in the first lap when everyone is fighting over the boost panels. In the event that you get knocked away from one with purely luck, you’ll get sent back and have access to the skyway. That means that the luck that they couldn’t remove has instead been invalidated

Its not a true 99 in that it doesn't continue until the last man standing, but can you imagine that game mode? It would have to be pretty cut throat, so as not to go on for too long. 10 racers knocked out a lap for 5 laps, then 5 for 5 laps, and so on until its just 1 racer getting knocked out a lap, or something similar. An alternative approach would be to control the supply of energy such that racers crash out more, shortening the race that way. Maybe the recharge band just gives less energy than normal, or it gives less each lap. Maybe collisions do more damage, or the edges do.

That's the original Wipeout from the PS1, it's a good series that hasn't had an entry in a while

That's why I don't play modern Mario Kart (competitively) for this reason. People should be punishment so they can improve, not the other way around. Players getting rewarded by playing bad or being under skilled gives this fault sense of accomplishment. As if the game is auto set on handicap.

it isn't a handicap if it applies to anyone further behind. I see it as less than a reward and more of a way to keep you from being hopelessly behind, cuz that would take the fun out of the game.

@@choboy46 I'd say just find time to actually practice and your skills will improve.

If all this unfairness is fun, why am I not having any fun? Because this game isn't fun. It took F-Zero and turned it into a mess of crashing into people. Your takes are idiotic.

People can have different takes, just because you dislike a game but another person enjoys it, that doesn’t make them fucking stupid, people can have fun with different things.

This game sucks beyond suckage! It's true that the game keeps the skilled and unskilled players on reasonably equal ground, but the variable in a game like that is LUCK. And luck just happens to be my worst subject. I got so sick of going from 4th to 74th, from losing half my energy to a single bumper and watching 80-90% of all gold cars spawn directly behind me despite my current rank and racing my ass off only to rank out that I just deleted this insufferable spamware from my Switch! It should be exactly the kind of game for me, but because luck plays such a huge role in the outcome, it's exactly the kind of game I should never touch. I give F-Zero a giant "F"! And you can guess what the F stands for.
