Well Vandoorne is driving against arguably one of the (if not the) best drivers in the world. And is lately quite close in qualifying with him. Much more can't be asked from a rookie, especially since testing is limited as much as it is now. That's the reason we'll never see someone do a Hamilton 2007 rookie year again. There's virtually no real preparation. Palmer is already in his second year in formula 1 and is still 8 tenths slower than his experienced (yet rather unsuccessful) teammate.
