I know others have said this, but lower tyre pressures means more contact with the road, and thus higher temperatures, higher degradation, and higher fuel use, for the benefit of gaining more grip and less wheelspin under power. I don't know how many of those things are taken into account by the game, but that's how things work IRL so I'd imagine the game is pretty close.
