F1 24 REVIEW | Will a sim racer enjoy the new Formula One game?

F1 24 is now available via the Champions Edition so I thought I'd make a short review giving you my thoughts - especially on the big debate regarding the new handling and physics model! These are just my reflections though, so let me know in the comments what you think!

i keep seeing people saying the handling on a wheel is so bad its "borderline undrivable" ....but also that its not as it should be and theres a patch coming. such a bummer considering that max and lando "tested and had input" for the new handling model. i dunno i guess im spoiled from playing acc alot and have u realistic expectations, but i would love to eventually get an actual F1 sim one day

It’s definitely not undriveable in my opinion if you crank the wheel rotation up, and I actually like other elements of the new physics. I’m hoping they can fix it and retain what’s good about other areas, and then I think it might actually be the most “realistic” model the F1 series has had. If only the FFB was more detailed! 😂

My biggest bug bear are the track surfaces. I know they don't have laser scanned tracks and all that, but it doesn't mean every surface should be butter smooth. It's ridiculous.

Yeah it’s a real shame - when I moved from being primarily a racer on f1 into other sims it blew my mind how the FFB communicated the road surface and kerbs etc. Hard to go back afterwards, but I do find I sort of get used to it

Verstappen helped developed this handling model, so my guess is that's why it's so insanely sharp which Albon described his preference as.

Max, one time, tested a very early build of the game and then had a detailed discussion about what he thinks could be changed/improved. It's definitely a positive, but I often see this aspect being over-marketed compared to the time he actually spent helping the development... Edit: the impression I get is, he likes oversteer, so he advised based on this input and the devs just ran with it, without then making followup meetings to actually refine that feeling

I play on a gamepad on ps5 and i found there is nothing wrong with the handling. I have had to correct myself 2 or 3 times due to losing the back end. I like the game. Its great

Hey Jason - yeah I haven't played on a pad but I can believe the rotation input issues were wheel specific. A few patches later and it's certainly improved to me.

I’m a sim racer and a big fan of the f1 series. I play pad and I feel the same about the game. The more I play it the more I understand what’s happening but the slow speed feeling isn’t correct. Final chicane at spar for eg is a joke. The car bobbles and huge bites of unrealistic grip and rotation really spoils what would be a very nice instalment to the f1 game series. If they fix this I’m happy. If you want a quick fix till update can I recommend stiffening the anti roll bars and suspension. Rear stiffer than front to encourage understeer. More rear downforce to front downforce for the same reason. You will be slower but much more consistent and smooth.

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much nicer it feels to me. I was able to turn off TCS finally, and the increased/improved haptic, audio, and visual feedback on when your close to losing grip is very nice.

I'm using the 5hr trial at the moment. It's positive (in a sense) that the devs has effectively admitted that the handling is broken with promise of an update. I just hope it comes sooner rather than later. F1 is far from a sim, but it does make progress on that front each year. Just a shame that the well-intentioned handling model has landed so poorly.

i saw how Jarno Opmeer does his world records on time trial he literally drift into corners like in Mario Kart bc its faster. Its hilariously bad if ure a simracer, its ok if ure a casual pad player what EA seems to target. Overall it's EA's classic releasing a game in this state and demanding 69,99 EUR, same with FIFA releases, this games are only worth to buy on huge discounts and after couple of patches. PS: the world record for Monaco is 4 seconds faster than Leclerc's pole position on last race, all becouse of abusing the arcadish handling.

Hey Paul! I haven’t tried the update yet as I’m away, so I’d say it’s worth checking out what other creators have made of that before deciding. In the end it’ll come down to how much you want to experience the driver career as that’s the main extra feature outside of the handling.

I myself haven't played any of the official F1 games, because they are more like game-like, and I prefer iRacing. So, in my biased opinion, I'd like F1 to give iRacing the license to be the official F1 simulator. Just like NASCAR stopped the NASCAR Ignition Series and Heat Series and gave it to iRacing, I'd like that to happen with F1. However, this is a biased opinion, and not to be taken seriously. 😂I just like iRacing; though I play other sims AC, ACC for racing(I wanna try AMS and Rfactor though), and then American Truck Simulator and BeamNG for fun, casual driving. Also great video! Awesome content as always!

Hey Andrew - it’s really tricky to say mate. I did a 100% race last night on F1 24 and quite enjoyed it, even though the low speed / rotation thing is still to be fixed. The driver career looks fun and to have a decent amount of depth. But it’s a lot of money for an annual update that doesn’t fully work yet!

F1 is very much a gateway to SIM racing and is probably one of the main titles that people come from Personally Ive bit the bullet but won't get to grips with it till next week, but Ive let my iRacing sub expire while I play F1 for abit... Ultimately the nature of an officially licensed title gives it enough appeal to lure me in each year and I'm planning on this year to be the one I put some serious time into it.... May have been the worst year to do so but we shall see From your view I doubt labrocca F1 will be getting any additional content 😂

That’s good to hear buddy! As I say I certainly enjoyed elements of it - my suspicion is the underlying model is actually good, but something, somewhere, isn’t working quite as intended. Hopefully a patch sorts it out, but really glad that you (and others) are enjoying it anyway!

I really think the people who hated it were sort of worrying that it was going to be like f1 22 which was awful to me at least. That’s my thought on the situation.

I’m a sim racer… I’ve cranked 10 hours of racing into the game.. it drives awesome. No it’s not iRacing.. or ACC… but it handles nicely, and the FFB is improved with a little more detail over last year. Accept and enjoy the game for what it is, not what you want it to be. F1 under EA will never be a sim racing game. At least it works with all of our wheels, and it’s fairly decent.

I'm with you on this one. I find that it's actually drivable, which I can't say about 22 or 23, and the cars are feeling somewhat like cars. Great candidate for a casual racing game for me, when I'm not in the mood to get super competitive on iRacing.

So my feeling FWIW is that something is broken, but that the underlying model might actually be quite good. It may also be equipment dependent I suppose, but the behaviour at low speed I cover in the video isn’t just a characteristic that I don’t like, it’s genuinely very odd. You can drive around it but really you shouldn’t have to. I think / hope they’ll get on top of it because I’ve enjoyed playing each title in recent years, irrespective of how “sim” like it is.

@@Ben_LaBroca From my first impression, I agree that low speed was a bit weird, but the mid/high speed improvements were loads more noticeable for me. Hopefully the upcoming patch will fix stuff up, because I do think the underlying improvements are there!

Super happy people are enjoying it but disagree with the accept the game as what it is not what you want it to be, if enough of the community wants it's to be sim (not saying this is the case but hypothetical) then voicing that is the best way to move it towards kind of game, and agree ea won't want to make a full SIM but using some of the depth SIM elements can provide I think is essential to giving a full F1 experience, they do it a bit I personally think they should do it a bit more (without needing 1000s of hours to get good lol)

Very hard to say buddy. Forza offers a very wide range of content and a different kind of experience. Personally I’d recommend F1. But then Forza is free on game pass!

If you’re an F1 fan and are on pc, assetto corsa should be your way to go. You can download a mod with the 2024 grid and also have access to some amazing classic F1 cars. AC is by far the best driving simulator

I'm feeling a little bit crazy right now, the world hating this game and the more I drive it the better it gets, even though it is somewhat 'broken', this is the most enjoyable Codemasters game to drive since probably F1 2013, the latest games always tried to be more 'sim like' and missed the mark with a handling that always had a strange mid corner understeer. F1 24 out of the box drives like an F1 car should, eating fast corners for breakfast, I rather prefer them go a more 'arcadey' route like this and make the game fun like 2010 to 2013 than doing the poorly made sim that was not enjoyable to drive. It's apparent that there is an issue because if feels like the grip curve is infinite never reaching a limit which ends up causing the sudden snaps when trying to change the direction but I don't think is nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be at least for me, but I'm not an esport wannabe trying to make broken setups to go 7 seconds faster than real life so I can understand exactly where the frustratrions are coming from.

Haha no me neither! FWIW I think there could be one or two things that aren’t working as intended which are causing the issues, but that the underlying model is actually quite good. It’s either related to rotation or the ‘weight’ switching on and off at particular speeds / turning angles. Hopefully they get on top of it!
