He sounds like he is still thinking in Finnish and translating it to English in his mind. I would think that is not actually the case after so many years of using English as business language but it sounds like it to me.

Mika was straightforward in attitude, handsome with a nice finnish accent, fast on-track and won 2 WDCs. He had and achieved basically everything. Legend of F1, more so because of the way he carried himself. Didn't cry in front of the media, settled everything face to face. Zero attitude or ego and a funny guy.

I was always a fan of Mika, he was my man. Thing is, in these retrospectives, because Mika is a two time champion, they seem to talk things out as if that was his destiny. They always overlook how, like Jean Alesi, Mika was one of those perennial top-level "what DOES he have to do to win a race?!" drivers. Championships were never a consideration. Watching it all play out at the time, it felt to me more that it was only after winning Jerez 97 (fortuitously) that that monkey was finally off his back. Only from then on did he really "unleash".

Shame this is the edited version. 15:15 When Mika tells of Ayrton asking him after Estoril qualifying: “What did you do? How you were quicker than me, what did you do?” Rather than Steve Ryder just butting in, Mika’s actual response was “I’m not sure if you can show this on TV, but I made ‘this’ sign (he proceeded to make a ‘wanker’ gesture with his right hand half below the camera shot), and he said that Senna was absolutely *furious* about it. 😂 I’ll check to see if I can find the full version somewhere else. It’s no longer included in the F1 TV Documentaries version of this interview either. But someone will have seen it. Plus you can tell that it’s edited (by Sky) because the way Ryder just butts in “but he put you in your place in the race” and Mika was still speaking at the start of Ryder’s sentence. It’s another victim of cancel culture & just clumsy editing unfortunately.

@Wut32254 ай бұрын
It was boring before DRS too, which is partly the reason DRS was introduced
@pingpong96564 ай бұрын
@@Wut3225 Not quite true - DRS was introduced as cars could not be driven close to one another. The reason for this is that they made stupid aero regulations that KILLED SLIP STREAMING - which is the KING of RACING ENTERTAINMENT... DRS is a band aid on a regulation problem. It's the most FAKE way of overtaking - requires little driver skill compared to slip streaming. Boring racing is the end result.

I don’t think us normal people even understand who’s really good. Mika, Senna, Schumacher, Prost, Berger… all these guys, they understand/understood the name of the game at a level that we can’t comprehend. They were all insanely good. Senna was my favorite of all time and I love Mika as well. I’d say they were my favorite two drivers. I love all the drivers though. That was such a golden era, the 80s and 90s. I haven’t been able to be interested after that. I switched to watching MotoGP in the early 2000s which was one of the golden eras for that sport still. Or maybe I’ve gotten older and I’m just not up to date with the names and drivers and riders anymore. I think MotoGP is still fun to watch now. But F1 for me at least became boring somewhere down the line. But back in the day it was so exciting.

@@lassesuurmunne8340 I was on the pit crew of a TransAm race team for 2 years, and both of our pro race drivers (Scotty Lagasse and Jacob Mosler) seemed to think that there's a natural plateau. Some guys have a talent for strategy, or at using the car's setup to the fullest, or finding the last ounce of grip. But in general, both of them thought that (past a certain level anyway) luck and preparedness decided races more than any particular x-factor of driver talent. Although the fastest Formula class either of them drove was a Formula Three, I think...

Mika was better than Michael because he didn't have to cheat his way to a championship. Michael is an all time great but just like Ayrton, he always got dirty when he was pressured. Ask Rubens about Hungary 2010.
