I built a simple cooling shirt for myself using 3mm garden drip hose a plastic bottle filled with icy cold water and a windscreen washer pump, it worked suprisingly well🎉

This is way more important than it seems. Some years ago i raced an endurance multiclass at the Jarama Racetrack. We had like 30+ outside temps in a racecar with closed cockpit, no air conditioning and rules didn’t allow to lower the side windows for safety reasons. After 6 hours of non stop racing i stepped in the car for my 2 hours split. It was hell. I was in a 50 degrees cockpit with all clothes on, sweating in my helmet while concentrating in fighting for victory. My body was fighting against me, each lap felt like and entire race. Some moments i was afraid of losing consciousness… The gearbox ended up exploding, up to that point it felt like a relief. I haven’t raced in real life again since. I can’t imagine how it must be in top tier categories…

Cool system, hopefully it works well, we've seen multiple driver illnesses after the race in the past few years. I don't think it removes the need for the helmet airflow however. From what I can tell, they also need the helmet airflow to reduce the humidity on the inside of the helmet & prevent fogging on their visor.

😂 when you learn your $500 LeMons racecar from 2015 had the same driver cooling system that F1 would use 10 years later LMFAO. You can't even make this stuff up...

If they removed the helmet cooling ducts, it'll be another problem for the driver since the helmet can get very hot in just a few minutes. Maybe water can help, but what about the foggings. Old school helmet is prone to this (have used older style arai motorcycle helmet and it's god awful at hot weather), and when I used my friend's stilo helmet (full face, idk what the type is) on a gokart track, it's surprisingly easy to get some heat. Not unbearable, but enough to makes me want to get some cold air to the helmet. I don't know why the helmet manufacturer like Bell and Arai doesn't upgrade the cooling to get closer or equal to the current cooling capability and the aero of the motorcycle helmet.

The anti-fog wouldn't be removed, it's about the cooling ducts on the top.

@BSport320 I'm curious to see how they'll get rid of it. Considering the top part of the head will get hot quickly. Maybe with some vents like AGV pista or like those vents under the peak of motocross helmets. I'm actually pretty baffled with how helmet cooling is done on open cockpit cars. It's pretty rough compared to motorcycle racing, despite in both sides of sports the helmets are affecting the overall aerodynamic package of the vehicle. Sure, different principles, but giving it proper cooling is also important for the comfort, especially on high performance athletes

Drivers have upgraded from air cooling to water cooling. I can't wait for this to spring a leak and slowly the driver suit becomes a wetsuit.

Why don’t they use thermoelectric materials (Peltier effect) like the ones used used in PCR machines and other high tech, high fidelity appliances. This has been working reliably and precisely for decades. This would be a super simple way to cool the water in the shirt and all you need is electricity, of which there is a lot available at any given time in an F1 car. It would probably be a lot lighter than the compressor system and not require an extra hair duct. it would probably require the space of an iPhone or two.
@BSport320
@BSport320 22 сағат бұрын
The problem with peltier elements is the low efficiency. You would need a lot of them and quite a lot of electricity for the same cooling performance as shown here - and you would also need an air intake, but a bigger one.
@pklimbic
@pklimbic 22 сағат бұрын
@ thanks, I didn’t know, I always thought they were very efficient. I thought of using them to cool down the gasoline flowing to carburetors in old cars, or bubbles in the gas pipes can cause problems. But I guess it’s not a good solution.

@pklimbic One good parameter for measuring refrigeration efficiency is coefficient of performance, which is defined as cooling power obtained from the device over power needed to operate the device. Vapor-compression systems (like your typical fridge) can have a coefficient of performance of 4 (4 watt of cooling for 1 watt of invested energy), peltier elements have it about 0.3, which is more than 10x worse. As total heat power rejected from the device is cooling power plus invested power, you can see that Peltier elements need roughly 10 times more heat rejection capacity than a vapor-compression system for example. Another problem is that unlike refrigeration systems where condenser and evaporator can be spaced apart, the hot and cold elements of Peltier elements are millimeters apart from one another. Peltier elements are therefore useful in only a select few of circumstances, usually they are subpar to conventional technologies. Technology Connections has a good video on it you can check out.

Why not use thermoelectric cooling? There's a lot of available power, so using a couple hundred watts to a kW is nothing. It would be extremely simpler and more robust.

too dangerous as driver might get too cold and sneeze inside the helmet, decreasing view visibility and spread disease , becoming too calm and lose compatibility, more weight here is not a big issue, a more bigger issue is there are too many tubes running around the driver, and confuse them with the drinking tube, they might struggle to find water in a rushing situation and could mistaken the coolant with drink water.

@@fqeagles21 They all have closed cockpits with little to no airflow so it makes more sense. This is just more weight and padding the corners for cowards. If we are racing in places too hot for divers what about crews and fans too? Maybe just use common sense and stop going to place to hot for that time of year. Im sure this is all so Muhummed FIA can go to more oil rich tracks in the middle of places no one wants to live fuled by the oil killing our planet making it even hotter. rofl
