I'm sure Verstsppen is too egotistical to care, but I know that in his shoes I'd know that I didn't really EARN the championship. @@andrewostrom8676 You are rather missing the point that if Masi had allowed all passed cars to overtake as soon as that was possible, instead of first wasting one lap with the "lapped cars will not be allowed to overtake" message, the race would have restarted on the final lap, and to all likelihood would have come to the same conclusion. Yes, the procedures that were followed by Masi in only letting some cars past and restarting immediately were a very fringe interpretation of the rules, and I agree that the incident is worth looking into for the good of the sport, but if you're going to reason along what-if lines and draw conclusions about whether championships are earned or not based on that, at least go all the way back to where things first started to go off the rails and reason from there, not just from the point you feel most aggrieved about.

It’s wild that the actual international standard of p-metric for tire sizes is a mix of inches and millimeters- inches for profile of wheel and tire but millimeters for width. P-metric stands for “Passenger Metric” so any standard use road car (excluding light trucks and heavier) use this system, so I guess F1 cars count as passenger vehicles. Very fast, very expensive passenger vehicles
@Shaun.Stephens
@Shaun.Stephens 2 жыл бұрын
Not quite. It's inches for wheel rim but NOT 'profile of tyre'. The profile of the tyre (sidewall height) is a percentage of the width of the tread. 225/40 means that the tread is 225mm wide and the sidewalls are 40% of 225mm high (90mm). It's only the wheel (rim) diameter that's still in inches. So the whole size might be 225/40-R15 (for instance with a 15" rim).

One important element that always seems to be overlooked when discussing the new lower-profile tyres is the concept of damping. As CB noted the compliance of the old high-profile tyre made up part of the suspension travel of the car but critically it was undamped. With the low compliance of the new tyre that lack of springiness will have to be compensated by more travel in the suspension, but unlike the old tyre it can be properly damped by the damper systems. So this new tyre will be far easier for the teams to design for and control from an oscillation and ride perspective.

In Germany we do still use inches for some stuff. With the rims, we do use Inches. Also with displays, we use inches regularly. I mean it's way more convenient to say you have a 40" TV instead of saying you have a TV with a screen size of 101.6cm. The screen size is not so important for good numbers. You need to know the total width of the TV, when you want to fit it somewhere. The screen size doesn't help there. Knowing the aspect ratio, you can do the math and get the numbers exuding the frame but the frame is also important.

If they're going to a spec wheel rim as well, does that mean the wheel nut and mounting system will also be standardised? Because if it does go that way, that also opens the door (finally) to having standardised pit equipment between teams. A lot of people don't realise how expensive it is for the smaller teams to develop those things themselves.

If I did my calculations correctly, the front tires per the 2022 regulation are 305/43R18 while the rear tires are 405/33R18. As mentioned in an Engineering Explained video, I agree this is the worst way to communicate tire size - you've got metric units, percentages and English units mixed together. But it is effective, as any car enthusiastic would be familiar with this expression and can form a picture of the tires quickly. Whereas, seeing that the tires have 305mm/405mm width and 720mm overall diameter, and mounted on 457mm rims, it is more difficult to quickly form a picture of the tires. Again, I am not arguing against metric units. I think we should all adopt them. A 305/43R18 F1 tire is vastly different from a 225/45R18 tire that we see in our daily life, even though they look similar in numbers. However, the "conventional" expression of tire size, though messy, is familiar - until the tire manufacturers fully adopt metric units in our everyday life.
@simonblackham4987
@simonblackham4987 2 жыл бұрын
Note that the 'profile' or aspect ratio is in fact a percentage so gives a good idea of the tyre. Unfortunately the 45 road tyre and the 43 racing tyre are quite different due to the construction and materials used. You would need larger rims on the road tyre to match the rolling diameters ... just like you see larger rims for lower profile tyres on modern cars. The outer diameter changes little between a 17", 18" and 19" rim on the same car ... the aspect ratio decreases and the width increases but the rolling diameter remains pretty well the same (on manufacturer supplied cars!) Thus the front tyres of an F1 car will be lower than the rear because although the rear aspect ratio is smaller the side walls are 2.5mm larger ... you may regard this as negligible but the internal construction of the rear tyres will have to be stronger to deal with the larger tyre width (to prevent ballooning of the tyre). Question: will the rain tyres have a higher aspect ratio and thus be larger? It could be a real problem in heavy rain with the front wheels restricting the view even more 🤔 Does the F1 2022 tyre spec define the rolling diameter of the tyres, so the aspect ratios you have given are just derived values?
@randomthingswithwheels1641
@randomthingswithwheels1641 2 жыл бұрын
@@simonblackham4987 Actually the front and rear tire diameters for an F1 car are the same, and because the front is narrower than the rear, the front has a higher aspect ratio. That's why aspect ratios can be deceiving... But I still think they are valuable until the tire manufacturers fully adopt metric units in our everyday life.
@simonblackham4987
@simonblackham4987 2 жыл бұрын
@@randomthingswithwheels1641 ... sorry ... I realised that I had got it wrong and edited the post. Then realised that the spec probably defines the rolling diameter. For road car tyres the rim width is in inches but the tyre width is in mm. In the end the rim is in inches and the tyre bead 'width' to match it is variable. The tyre bead inner diameter is no doubt defined in inches (converted to mm!) as it has to match the rim.
@randomthingswithwheels1641
@randomthingswithwheels1641 2 жыл бұрын
@@simonblackham4987 Yeah... The FIA just gives the rolling diameter so my aspect ratios are just derived. From an engineering standpoint, defining the rolling diameter makes sense because as we can see, the aspect ratio isn't really the best way to describe a tire. Problem is, every tire manufacturer uses this convention so it's more relatable to our everyday life.

I think the weird mixture of units in the automotive world is probably an attempt at creating some kind of universal standard for parts that are on every car. It's not true in every aspect, since manufacturers from different parts of the world may use different bolt sizes, engine performance units, etc., but for wheel and tyre sizes it makes sense for everyone to use the same system of measurements. Allows wheel & tyre companies to sell the same range of products globally.

looks wise: Does Not correlates with road car wheels. New F1 wheels look less similar then previous years wheels, with the black plastic hub cap.

You also don't mention that the new tires should eliminate the horrible oscillations you sometimes see in the slow-motion video of cars going around a corner. Those can't be good for the structure of the tire or the handling of the car. Besides the ride being rougher and more like a kart, the turn-in should be quicker and more direct, the change of direction won't be absorbed in the sidewalk as much. You know, this is sounding more and more like an IndyCar that's costs 50X what an IndyCar costs to go 25% faster...

I'm glad they went to a lower profile tire, but seeing the cars I do wish they hadn't increased the OD of the tire so much, they look too big. Keeping the OD at 660, or at least closer to 660 than 720, and using a 15-17 inch rim instead of an 18 inch would've been superior IMO. And I dislike the look of the wheel covers. But I'm still happy the anachronistic 13s are gone, they hung around too long.

I agree with you. The 13"s were quite outdated, and they could have easily kept a lower profile tire with the new 18"s. The GT cars in WEC use 680 fronts and nearly the same width as the F1 fronts (although the rears, and LMP1 tires, are 710 diameter).
