The 2007 - 2012 period had the best f1 championship fights by far. 2007 1 point difference 2008 1 point difference 2009 11 point difference 2010 4 point difference 2011 (vettel domination) very close for 2nd place though 2012 3 point difference.

3:05 Guys come on. Vettel had to fight through the entire field. Basically twice because of a slow stop with a damaged car. And he didn’t need 6th place. 7th with two points less would have been enough. So while Michael‘s move was a nice gesture it was not the deciding factor of that race/championship.

Yeah people have totally re-written that. Schumacher didn't fight him because it was a greasy track and didn't want to be responsible for destroying the Championship hopes of his friend. Vettel was much faster; he was going to get by anyway. Weird that it's constantly brought up but we ignore 8 solid years of drivers getting out of the way of Mercedes drivers.

Ferrari didn't start backing Kimi for the title until after his win in Belgium for the final three rounds of Japan, China and Brazil. 2007 was a proper four-way title fight with everyone having a chance.

Actually, whoever wins this year's title would perform the biggest comeback in F1 history. Anyone not named Max Verstappen would've been at least 80+ points behind him. And Max himself was 46 points behind Leclerc after Australia, more than Vettel in any of his comebacks.

Wrong. The points system is different than the seasons in the video and way more races in the calender to close a big points gap. Max closing a 46 point gap due to Ferrari being idiots, with tones of races left is nowhere near as impressive as the comebacks in the video.

Leclerc 9x 1st + fastest lap + winning sprint race, Max 9x 2nd and 0 points in sprint race. Leclerc scores 242 points, Max 162 points. Both at 420 (nice) at the end of the year. Charles winning 12 in total of 14 podiums, Max winning 8 and 19 podiums so Charles will be champion. This will definitely happen with one exception.. Hamilton will get fastest lap in the last lap at Abu Dhabi and befriend Verstappen for the rest of his life.

Yes, but that was pretty early in the season, not at about half way or a little beyond that. Similiar scenario for Hamilton in 2016, he was down by 43 after a couple races and took the lead at about the half way point although he lost the title fight in the end. Still impressive but you can be a little more relaxed if there are that many more points still up for grabs. Vettel in 2012 was down by 44 points with 9 races to go and came back to win the title. So generally, I'd say if your opponent has some tough luck, you can overcome about two race wins worth (so 50 points in todays system) of a deficit provided you take advantage of the opportunities presented in a little less than half a season. Charles will need some serious RedBull reliability problems or crashes and no mistakes and plain sailing on his end to have a chance at turning it around.

My favorite one was the Kimi win because he won it in Kimi style. Spotlights were shining on the McLaren duo of Alonso and Hamilton, kind of leaving Kimi off doing his thing quietly on the side. You had 2x winning Driver’s Champion looking at possibly his 3rd consecutive win with Alonso. Then you had a driver in his rookie season who also could win this championship which is unheard of in the sport with Hamilton. But alas, when you have teammates taking points off each other, then a rookie doesn’t win and a driver who switched teams doesn’t get that 3rd win in a row. The quiet Iceman just drove from 3rd in the standings on to win with the sneak attack by 1pt. Which made me wonder in the beginning of the year; maybe Perez could do this. But do it while looking like a team player and supporting Max, but staying close in points and secretly fight for the championship win. Idk I thought it could possibly happen until he SAID he wants to win the championship then I said: Oof! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Big mistake. Shortly after they upgraded the car to suit Max entirely. Oh well.

This is a great example of British bias againt Vettel. People always undermined his comeback from back of the grid twice (first due to getting hit by Senna and second due to pitting error) with a broken car in Brazil 2012 when Michael let him passed. He didn't even need the 6th place. With 7th place, he was set to be the WDC that year. Shame on you.

Its not slipping up, but fighting enormous odds and making a title fight possible. The Ferrari was not a good car compared to McLaren or Red Bull in 10 and 12. In 07, he was on his own most of the season due to team politics. Look how hard it was for Vettel in 2020. Despite having his own team trying to make him lose, he cane within 1 point of victory.

There have been amazing comebacks in many racing series In 1992 in NASCAR, that years champion was 278 points down with six races to go, yet he was champion by ten points In the BTCC in the same year, that years champion (who’s now the commentator for the series) was 67 points down half way through the season He won the title by three points The V8 Supercars had a mega comeback in 2017 when that years champion was 78 points down going into the last race having been 30 ahead going into the weekend He won the last race and became champion by 21 points

The late Alan Kulwicki was crazy consistent and his bad finishes throughout the season weren’t as bad as Bill Elliott’s and Davey Allison’s (heck, the latter trade wins one week with a horrendous crash the following Sunday). Besides, Alan was pretty much the only owner-driver of its era to pull off what he did. Not only he was one of the best stock cars racers in the moment but he also was, ciring Slapshoes “a master strategist and tactician”. He knew when to strike and when to play it safe, always waiting for his chance to snatch points away from his rivals. He was a difficult person to have as a boss due to his eccentric character, but he certainly knew what he was doing. I recommend everyone to watch Slapshoes’s videos on the 1992 Winston Cup season and especially the one of Alan Kulwicki.

@@dannysstart2218 well, the modern era Winston Cup points system wasn’t that bad and provided interesting seasons. You had the odd one win champion with Matt Kenseth and several others, but it comes to show the skill and consistency of those drivers. But yeah, the current points system is pretty screwed up and good drivers that to this point have been winless this season are in risk of not having a run for the title because of the Playoff format, such as Martin Truex Jr and Ryan Blaney. They’ve had bad runs but they’ve been incredibly consistent throughout the year (For Blaney I’m not counting the All-Star Race, since there’s no points awarded in that event).

This reminds me of the third season of Tiametmarduk's F1 2021 MyTeam Career Mode. After 13 races, he only scored three wins and suffered three engine failures, which left him 101 points behind Verstappen in the drivers' standings. In the next 9 races, he finished all those GPs in podium places (including seven wins) to clinch the title in Saudi Arabia.

1982 Keke Rosberg 15pt deficit went from being measly 5th in the standings with no real shot but then went on a incredible run where he won 19 pts and championship lead whilst everyone was crashing and in the result stealing the title under everyones noses despite winning only once. He was greatly helped by Pironi's crash but Pironi wasnt the only driver on the grid.

@@propork Reutemann was a sketchy personality. Engineer Frank Dernie was talking about him what a wasted talent he was. He had a brilliant career no doubt but should have been crowned the champion. In Frank Dernies words Carlos Reutemann is the most naturaly gifted driver hes worked with and the one which impressed him the most. He rly should have been a champ that year but Frank Dernie told a story which perfectly describes Reutemann as a man. 19 pts advantage with couple of races to go and he was telling Frank Williams "im not feeling it this year, this isn't my year". Turns out he was right but have a feeling it wasnt because of destiny but his mind block instead.

Vettel did not win the 2012 WDC because Schumacher let him through. Vettel would’ve won anyways because Di Resta crashed. Way to diminish Vettel’s achievement that year. This was arguably his best drive to date.

What about James Hunt in 1976? He had problems pretty much in the first half of the season, not to mention he (initially) got DQ'ed in Spain after winning the race, then he got DQ'ed for real in British GP (announced at that year's Canadian GP) after he retired from Italian GP. But then he won in Canada, Watkins Glen, and finished 3rd in the old Fuji en route to his WDC, so I think that should be one of biggest point deficit comeback in F1 history, from 17 pts behind Lauda in the eve of Canadian GP to winning the WDC a single point ahead of Lauda. It was huge deficit considering the top 6 points system used that season (9-6-4-3-2-1).

It’s hard to really compare point deficits when the point system has changed, and the number of races per season has changed as well. It’s much harder to catch up 30 points if you only have 17 races in total and only can win 10 points per race than if you get up to 26 (or even 34 in sprint weekends) and you compete over 23 races…

The 1994 may be kind of example. Schumacher had a 37 points advantage (10-6-4-3-2-1 point system) with 9 races to go, but then the FIA disqualified him for 4(!) races to bring the intrique back to the championship. He ended up with only 1 point advantage over Hill in the final race where they collided (Schumacher took Hill out), they both DNFed and he won.

Well as remembering that Massa did lost the 2008 F1 title by 1 point when Hamilton overtook one needed place to get enough points. It was pretty devastating as Massa and Ferrari were already celebrating during that point. 2007 being miracle that Räikkönen won and then next year teammate had the biggest chance but then just barely failed. Could say that Felipe Massa could earned that.
