I was at the Melbourne GP last week. The RAAF F/A-18 on full reheat was by far, the loudest thing at the race. I noticed people with ear plugs still blocking their ears. When the V10's were around, the F/A-18 flybys were quiet by comparison. I can remember clearly hearing the cars from my house during the practice sessions, and my house is about 10 kilometers away from the track! Now, you need to be within 2 km of the track to even notice the sound.

Well, I've heard V6 Turbo F1 cars in person recently, and they sound amazing. It's hard to compare it to the sound of a v8/v10/v12, it's not a high pitched screaming tone but a deeper, more meaner sounding tone. You can really hear the power when boost kicks in. Also the turbo whistle/spool sounds epic when boost is building up. And next year's V6's rev higher than what they did in the mid 80's, so I still think they will be the best sounding race cars out of any series.

Yeah Dyson has been surprisingly successful in their first season on the grid. I would have expected stiff competition from the Oreck and Shark Manufacturers, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Although It will be quite interesting next year with McLaren making their much anticipated re-alliance with Dirt Devil.

ElCaPiTaNelalelu You do realise F1 was a fuel economy formula in the mid 80's when they had very small fuel tanks that could only just last a race distance right? It was common for a lot of the field to run out of fuel in the last 5 laps.

I love them all!! The V12 is silky smooth and well balanced. The V10 is a symphony of mechanics with harmonic overtones you only get with I5's and V10's. The V16 (which is actually an H16, not a V) is a ferocious, angry, snarling beast that I just LOVE!! However, having to pick only one, I think it'd be the V10 for me. If I had to listen to a CD with nothing on it but one type of engine as the music, the V10 would be my soundtrack of choice! I just LOVE those harmonic overtones! So unique!!

What F1 needs to do is end spec-racing and go back to the types of very broad engine rules from the 60's where where there is a very small amount of parameters placed on the engine and it was basically run what you brung.
@ChrisRefalo14 жыл бұрын
@Terminigga Modulating pedals to keep boost up throughout a turn would be much harder than current F1. Keeping a turbo on boost around a corner would be much harder and create more passing oppurtunities since some drivers would be able to keep higher amounts of boost coming onto a straight. Also, if they use very powerful and laggy turbos, the car would wheelspin soon as it comes on boost.

i Remember being at Spa as a kid in 1996 hearing the last ferrari V12, seeing the last Mclaren in Marlboro collors... man.. those were the days
@asshatnowhere15911 жыл бұрын
the recording you hear comes from the BRM V16 P15, a supercharged v16 engine capable of 15k rpms. often the car is confused with the BRM H16. as the name would imply, it is 16 cyl configured in an H formation, this means they are basically two flat 8's on top of each other. the only recording I heard of it was being revved a little bit
@C64SX13 жыл бұрын
@Polybun The recording of the BRM is from 2004. You get it on a CD if you purchase the book 'Into the red' by Nick Mason and Mark Hales. All the cars in the book are/were owned by Nick Mason (don't know if he has sold any of them since) and the CD contains recordings of some of the cars in the book. Recordings that they made for the book. Highly recommended :)
@ChrisRefalo13 жыл бұрын
@1300l Main reason for going 6 cyl is not only to be 'eco friendly', but it's to make it more relevant to actual road cars. Not many manufactures make V8/V10/V12 road cars anymore, and by allowing 6cyl turbo engines, many more manufactures would think F1 is a viable option and enter it.

@ViperSRTnACR11 жыл бұрын
What I wouldn't give to learn and drive an F1 car or even a training car. Imagine the pure power as you rev out to 20K rpms only to rapidly downshift for a turn, feel the G's as you round it, then are thrust back in the seat again as you throttle out past 185+ mph with ease.
@pcass3114 жыл бұрын
no other man made machine sound will ever come close to the sound of an f1 car for me its the v 12 but the v 10 is nearly just as good.That high pitch scream is heaven.the v12 where she brakes and he feathers the accelerator is the best bit pure class!

The BRM! It makes some of the most distinctive sounds I've ever heard from just about any F1 engine. Including the Matra V12 (which you neglected to include in you video BTW) which I've always thought sounded tremendous. That old V12 wins by a mile. It develops this beautiul harmonic-type sound in it's upper rev range that sounds like nothing else. I do love the sheer volume and pitch of the V10, though. The V-10's from the mid-late '90's were pretty awesome sounding, but when we got into the later years of the V-10 (like 2002-2005), some engines definitely sounded better than others. I personally think the BMW engine in the 2005 Williams sounded pretty flat, whereas the 2005 Ferrari engine sounded pretty awesome from an onboard camera, as it had a crisp high pitched scream coupled with some very nice harmonic undertones.

They're all beautiful to me. Such precision and engineering is awe-inspiring. Yeah, F1, etc. beats all hell out of NASCAR (not too hard to do, really), but give me a ripping 4-cylinder in a Group B rally car. Don't get me wrong, I have massive respect for F1 drivers and engineers, but I can't imagine anything better than a car driving "straight sideways" around a muddy hairpin turn at 70mph, with a driver tap-dancing on the pedals hoping to hell that the spectators aren't in the track ahead.

Actually, the 4 and 6 cylinder turbos of the 80's made way more power than any other motor in F1. Also traction control had nothing to do with why the went to V8, V8's had traction control in 2006 and 2007.

In fact, V8 are mandatory till 2013. During the 90's, there's been an era of relative freedom for motoring engineers. NA engines had a 3.500cc displacement, and V8, V10 and V12 layouts were allowed. By the time, V8 were light, with low end torque, but were limited in rpm, and were able to win only on short tracks such as Monaco. V12 were more powerful (high rpms) but too heavy and large. That's why V10 ruled this era (1000hp for the last BMW 3.000 V10).

And on the tyre management issue, I think this year it has gone too far with tyre management, however if the tyre wear was not an issue at all, then the fastest car would win all the time. It's a tough topic, but I think 2011-2012 seasons had the best compromise between tyre wear and having to push hard during a race.
@ChrisRefalo13 жыл бұрын
@nativebrother Yeah there is absolutely nothing like it. The tension 5 minutes before the race starts is almost unbearable. And when the cars are screaming around on the other side of the track and you can hear them coming closer and closer, it's the most exciting and the best feeling ever (without driving the car that is). Even though I've been to 3 F1 races, I still get excited like a little kid everytime they are about to come in to view. Everyone has to experience it once before they die.

The down shift sounds better on the V12. I remember it in person being a deep sound and the slower down shift changing gives it that great popping sound. The last of the V10 engines rev bloody hard and the gear changing is just so fast that it just sounds faster than the V12, and it too has that great performance sound to it.
