This man is really something special. Just think, he won the last real indy 500 and championship, pole on f1 debut (almost win) & f1 champ beating shumi, all in space of 3-4 years by the age of 26! Mind you losing ur dad at a young age and living in that massive shadow is very difficult. @jtjorger6 жыл бұрын
Domenic Mariani why was it the last real indy 500
@mgecko29596 жыл бұрын
Domenic Mariani when it comes to his F1 career it wasn't spectacular at all. He drove first two years in very dominant car against rather average teammates. He never won a single race after 1997, with such a strong start to his career (which was more given than earned) its rather ridiculous. He was beaten by young Alonso and Trulli to the seat at Renault, he was annihilated by young Button at Honda, he was destroyed by Heidfeld in Sauber and even Sato replacing him at the last race of 2003 managed to secure 6th (best position Jacques finished all year), he was beaten by Massa and Kubica scored only 1 point less in 6 races of 2006 than Jacques managed in 12 races in same car and finished 3rd in Monza where Jacques best place all year was 6th (and only once). So no sorry but Jacques Villeneuve was nothing special, was loosing to young and unexperienced drivers at the same team and only people he managed to constantly outscore was Zonta and Frentzen. Also yeah it definitely have impact on someone to lose their father at young age but apparently that helped in his F1 career, there is no way he would get into Williams in 1996 if he wasn't a son of Gilles. Also it was quite lucky timing for him, if he didn't get to Williams at that time he would be unlikely to ever finish on the podium.

Jacques was my chance to be like my dad. For me to follow F1 with passion and to cheer for the Villeneuve name. I first saw him in Formula Atlantic at the Toronto Indy race. He finished second. He moved to Indy. I saw him qualify on pole and finish second. Saw him at every race in Montreal at the Canadian Grand Prix at circuit Gilles Villeneuve. He is so much like his father. Different times and different perceptions portray them completely differently in the media. Sometimes the emphasis or choice of certain words going from French to English can be misunderstood. My dad told me recently that one of his best mates at Heriot Watt university was Jock Clear(They graduated in 85 but Jock did a 2yr masters on carbon fibre technology and finished in 87). He told me a story of when he was in his last year of uni, his Ford Cortina got stolen. When he got it back he started taking an alternator cable with him whenever he parked it. The same thieves found it again and, having realised what my Dad had done, went and nicked the same cable off another Cortina (my dads must’ve been very lucrative) and used said cable to, start and, steal the car again. Police found it a couple days later and Jock gave my Dad a lift up to the Police station in his immaculate Lancia Delta and, just before my Dad got out, Jock offered my Dad his baseball bat to possibly help with the “interrogation”. Last time they spoke was at a speakers event for successful Heriot Watt graduates at some point in the late 80s/90s.

I think a lot of people think that way. Very hard to tell Michaels actually ability. I do think he is extremely talented but he cheated so much with illegal cars and had FIA and Ferrari stop other teams innovations by making up new rules to stop them. Michael was a very complete driver but his ultimate speed may not be as quick as someone like Hakkinen, Villeneuve or Montoya. May be more like a Vettel who will dominate only with the right circumstances
@tomwells80932 жыл бұрын
Villeneuve needs a front end car. 96 Williams was way too stable and more prone to understeer than oversteer. Hes a ballsy racer and needs a car he can throw around. Just like all the other real racers: Senna, Schumacher, Alesi, Montoya etc. When they can't have the front end be the main priority they can't perform at their best. They obviously can adapt to other cars but with those front end cars they can destroy everyone. 1997 was way more to his liking and he showed what he can do. Even in his BAR days if he was in a top team he would have been challenging for titles. If he accepted McLarens offer he definitely would have taken at least one title off Hakkinen.

@mgecko29596 жыл бұрын
I disagree. If Kimi is so good in developing the car why is he getting beaten by his teammates every single year at Ferrari? And if he really is so important for car development then they should make him test driver and give the seat to someone who will be able to compete with Merc and Vettel. It makes no sense to make car 0.1sec faster thanks to Kimi's influence and then lose 0.2sec of race pace because Kimi cant drive faster.
@ciaronsmith49956 жыл бұрын
Enough. His feedback is supernatural. He is like a musician with perfect pitch, but it can work against you to be such a perfectionist. Giving feedback benefits BOTH drivers if its good. Kimi hates these Pirelli tyres and is screwed by Ferrari's clear favoring of Vettel in strategies. Prime Kimi is the fastest driver I have ever seen, he is close to 40 now, so you really have no clue what you are talking about.
@aidankeogh53506 жыл бұрын
MajicGecko PMPL Go through past years of F1. Red Bull had Webber, Mercedes had Rosberg and Ferrari have two drivers capable of car development. Ferrari can win the drivers championship this year because both drivers give good feedback on how to improve the car.
@mgecko29596 жыл бұрын
Ciaron Smith oh I completely agree that Kimi in his prime was an absolute beast. Problem is his prime was 2004-2008 with slight bit of It back in 2013 but that was 5-14 years ago and now days he isn't the same Kimi. Now Ferrari screwing him over I can agree on but also Kimi is not doing himself any favours by being constantly slower than Seb. When you cant compete for constructors you have to focus on WDC and cant blame Ferrari they favour better, faster and more consistent driver that actually is in his prime over little burned out slower and less consistent veteran. Now when it comes to giving feedback on the car im sure Kimi is great source of information for Ferrari but it doesn't mean he is the only one capable of doing so. The car is build under Seb and it is his feedback which is most important and like I said before Kimi can do the same job for Ferrari as reserve/test driver without slowing the team in the races. So him being almost 40 is my exact point, he isn't the same Kimi and apparently all he has for the team right now is feedback which is still less important than Seb's.
@mgecko29596 жыл бұрын
Aidan Keogh are you suggesting that Webber or Rosberg were irrelevant or not important for Mercedes and RBR for car development? Let me tell you how wrong you are. When Vettel joined RBR it was already 2nd best team on the grid. He had absolutely zero impact on how well this 2009 car was developed where Webber was. 2010 car wasn't exactly build of Vettels feedback either. Team started work on that car in early stages if 2009 where Vettel was barely familiar with the car and most of the feedback was coming from Webber. Considering that car didn't change that much between 2010-2013 I would say Webber had overall much bigger impact on how that 4 time championship car was developed than Vettel. Simular with Mercedes, Hamilton joined in 2013 and at that stage team was already building 2014 car mostly of what they had from Rosberg and Schumacher as well. Impact that Lewis had on that beast of 2014 car wasnt big and compare to Rosberg it was minimal.

I love seeing Jacques Villeneuve's comments whenever I'm reading up on F1 news. Even if I disagree with some things he says, his honesty is refreshing. In this PC- commie- snowflake- age, hearing someone speak their mind without filters, is rare.

The French broadcast of F1 weekends are commented by Jacques, and it's always a pleasure because he is honest and sometime rough. Even if I can't agree with him all the time, he has a knowledge of the inside of F1 that watchers don't have.

If F1 reads comments like they say they do: 1) Can you make the Director's Cut/Race Edits of races again (the ones with music). They were really well done (but I only want them if we can have both the director's cut and highlights). 2) Can you reintroduce split screen to the F1 games. I know these requests are a bit lame but I loved these.
