F15E Quick Guide - Target Locking, IFF, and Missile Engagement

You don’t have time for page long handbooks and 30 minute tutorial videos about the F15E and just want to get out there and shoot stuff in DCS? Then this Quick guide is just for you! In this video, I’ll provide you with a quick and comprehensive overview and a step by step guide on how to throw sticks at your enemy, focusing specifically on target locking, IFF (Identification Friend or Foe), and how to fire you missile at baddies. For all steps I’ll also provide you with the necessary keybinds for your Hotas.

Keybinds:
You will find all the listed key binds quickly when you type “Hotas” in the search bar of the controls panel. The information in [ ] is the exact category where you find the key bind, I also try to match this setup when I bind it to my Hotas. The key bind listed have the exact wording like in dcs, so you can copy them to search, the description behind the “-“ is only a explanation and should not be copied .
Weapon release (Pickle) [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Fire your ordnance like missiles or bombs
Trigger [Control Stick, Hotas] - Shoot your gun, when selected
TDC Slew [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Slew your cursor on the Radar, TGP etc. You can also bind it with axis.
TDC Press [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Lock the target your cursor is hovering over
Radar Antenna Elevation UP [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Increase your Radar scan ceiling
Radar Antenna Elevation DOWN [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Decrease your Radar scan ceiling
Castle Switch LEFT [Control Stick, Hotas] - Hold (1-2 sec) long to make the left MFD SOI (Sensor of Interest), take control of Radar
Weapons/Mode Switch FWD (MRM) [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Select Medium Range Missiles like Aim-7 Sparrow and Aim-120 Amraam
Weapons/Mode Switch CNT (SRM) [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Select Short Range Missiles like Sidewinder
Weapons/Mode Switch AFT (GUN) [Throttle Quadrant, Hotas] - Select Gun

I think you skipped this but Auto Acq Forward Long puts you into LR (Long Range) Boresight with a range of 40nm Edit: You can also use TDC up and down whilst in Super Search to change the elevation

Not at you just your post made me think. I do not have the F-15E but this is what happens when people have no time for manuals, 30 min tutorial videos but have time to watch 6 five minute videos or dying 4 times then getting frustrated that it's too "hard". My point is that stuff is missed and in my opinion it is better to learn something slow once than fast twice.

I have the manual here, I love grimreapers, and I also found this shirter one very handy just as something to build from. You never know who has or doesn't have learning difficulties. Yeah, the manual says it's coolie switch right...had to find out myself that left is actually working. Not sure if the manual is written wrong or if it is a bug. We have to see, when it does not work anymore, try coolie switch right ;).

Some of my favorite KZbin DCS content creators go way too far in-depth on how to do some of the most simple task. I don't care who invented the technique of air to air combat. Just show me how to use the damn radar! lol I don't fault them for it, there are some who demand that level of tutorial and they're just giving them what they want. And I will go back and learn the intricacies of small details, but I bought the damn thing to blow up enemy planes, not write a dissertation for a college exam.

Ain't the coolie left, it is left multifunction switch (maybe he watched the Grim reapers A/A radar tutorial , there are multiple errors in that vid, like how to enter TWS and 3hdt scan mode, besides the error about IFF)

There’s a switch at the far left of the cockpit to enable, then coolie right long? Check this, but I was getting decent results, even if I was doing it wrong - it says the name of the aircraft in the centre of the radar screen. I swear I ID’d a harrier at 60+nm.

Henrik is right you have to set the "NCTR Enable" Switch to ON, which is left of the throttle right against the left outside wall. This sets the NCTR to Auto Mode and will give you a response when IFFing. I've read in the forum that there are still some bugs with NCTR though, not all aircraft will be identified.

How do I remove the ground clutter off the radar?

You can change the intensity of the radar filter on the left side of the radar screen (the second OSB from the bottom). It says "GMTR MED", if i remember correctly with "GMTR CHAF" you get the least clutter but will miss slow moving targets and it will be easier to notch your lock. GMTR = Ground Moving Target Rejection

The Mode are not modeled yet and at the moment it doesn't matter which you choose. I always switch it to A in my startup, so that I don't have to relearn it when it will finally be implemented.

Buyer be aware! The future of the F15E is not clear, it is currently not further developed! Razbam says it has to solve a problem with ED before returning to work, no one knows how this goes and IF they return to develop the aircraft (and all its other modules).

Which missile did you use? For the Sidewinder you have to wait for tone of the seekerhead. Maybe the guy notched you or broke the lock somehow, i also have terrible results with the Sparrow most of the time.

@@kamza87 I used the 120c5 and waited for the things to turn orange and tried pointing within the fire circle, as for sidewinder which I tried close I believe the tu22 just flared it away. It's 100% a skill issue, since same would happen in f-16 and since I probably dont even have 50 hours in dcs I really suck

Also zunächst erstmal nen gutes und zielgerichtetes Video. Aber wichtige Infos für Neulinge hast aus meiner Sicht teilweise ausgelassen: z.B. woran erkenne ich, welcher Bildschirm SOI ist? Oder das cycling zwischen Sparrow and Amraam.... da wäre die Armament Page auch gut gewesen. Oder wo man erkennt, dass man die Antenna elevation ändert. Du hebst optisch sehr viel hervor, was ich sehr gut finde, aber lässt noch wichtige Info´s aus. Eine generelle Keybindung Darstellung zu Beginn ist möglicherweise auch sinnvoll. Also im Kern schon sehr gut aufgearbeitet aber nen bisschen geht noch. Ich bin gespannt auf zukünftige Videos. Have fun!👍

Die deutschen Untertitel sind eher so als Bonus gedacht, ich kann aber verstehen, dass der deutsche Titel andere Erwartungen wecken kann. Habe es deswegen etwas verändert, KZbin bietet die Möglichkeit bei Untertitel in anderer Sprache auch Titel und Beschreibung zu ändern, daher der Widerspruch. Ich wollte das Video so kurz wie möglich halten und glaube auch nicht, dass es das richtige Tutorial für einen absoluten Anfänger ist, da man als solcher, aus meiner Sicht, mit den absoluten Grundlagen anfangen sollte und man am besten beraten ist mehrere Quellen wie das Manual und lange Videos zu konsumieren. Die Tips mit noch ein bisschen mehr optischen Hilfen nehme ich gerne mit, da war ich wohl zu sehr in meiner Perspektive, dass fast alle schonmal Radar Antennen Höhen verstellt haben und die FC3 F15c geflogen sind ;).
