A cotter key extractor tool is also very helpful in moving the window around and pulling the gasket over the lip of the cab. It works especially well when using soapy water spray or silicone spray.

@@BackyardDIY-Zachary yes and as you pull the rope every 6 in push the rubber into placed..do to each lower side to center the window then up the sides on each side then the top always setting the rubber as you go

Good video. When I have done this, I: 1. Only try when in a warm place and the gasket is warm for flexibility 2.Soak the cord in glycerin or light lube - helps a lot. 3. Use a clean putty knife that is narrow (1-2”) and make sure the edges are smooth. The wider and thinner blade diminishes potential for damage to the frame and the gasket. 4. Oh yes and, give the metal edge of the opening a quick clean and remove any burrs, etc.

Totally good tips, I agree they would definitely work! I only wish I had a garage big enough then I could have brought the whole operation warmer.. But with a missing window I wanted to replace it, granite I could have just taped it til summer but I didn't want to do that. Thanks though for watching, Thank you very much for the tips. Will definitely help viewers that read my comments. Backyard DIY-Zachary

Use the truck heater to keep cab warm , put big blanket over the cab and a tarp to cut the wind. If fumes get to much , you could always use a space heater and have a heat gun handy .
@austinatkins4086 жыл бұрын
Warming the rubber will help a lot, also they make nylon tools (7” long or so) that are about $1 online that make it easy to work that seal all the way around without scaring it. One end is flat other is rounded. Good video man!

Nice idea with the lube and pull cord. Only tip I could toss in is to use dawn soap for lube. After it dries it gets sticky. Thanks for a good demo

That was basically the same method I used on my Peterbilt split window. My suggestion would be to use some Dawn dish detergent around the rope. Makes it a lot easier to pull the rope through.

Are there bolts that I am missing or something? Because removing the rubber trim around window is not going well... I can't get even an inch of it to come out of the groove, but when I put more pressure on it the pry tool I'm using just rips through the rubber. Help?
@BackyardDIY-Zachary Жыл бұрын
Not sure what's going on. There are no bolts or anything like that. You just have to peel the rubber up and out motion. After your seal is pushed in the window will fall. Do you have electric rear sliding window? That may be part of your hang up if you do. I did this on a model that was manual. I really hope the best for your project!

4:00 how in the hell did you just pull the rubber out with your hands?? I have been prying and ripping and tearing it for an over an hour now and I can't even get an inch of it to separate from window..
@BackyardDIY-Zachary Жыл бұрын
Not sure if it is age of the material why your having issues with it. If you have a way to heat it up (hair drier or heat gun) I would think that would make it easier to be flexible. Also I assume your talking removal not install. When I removed it I wasn't gentle with it since I knew it wasn't going to be re-used. I hope the video helps. Hopefully you get your project done! Thanks for watching, thanks for taking your time to comment. DIY-Zac

It doesn't separate from the glass (atleast that's not how I did it) the goal is to pry the seal up and out. The rubber will stay with the glass.
@waynekilburn823 Жыл бұрын
A guy replaced a winshield in my Lexus some years back. He used WD40 to make it easier to seat seal. That sh*t slowly leaked onto the glass inside for YEARS, holding dust etc. Maybe a detergent OK but caution on using a lubricant.

Those holes in the back of the cab behind the rear seat are supposed to have plastic air vents in them. They are to allow out of the truck but not to let air in the truck.

Soooooo I noticed that there is sealant on the seals when I have removed them from my truck and the donor truck.... you didn't use a sealant?
@BackyardDIY-Zachary5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, No I didn't use any kind of sealant and didn't notice any leaks from it. Although I only had the truck for another couple months after shooting this video. That truck was basically just for project/fun/making videos on it. I'm not positive but I think I remember watching a guy on youtube that worked/owned a junkyard and he was the one I got the string tip from. He didn't use sealant and was opposed to it. I can't remember why he said he was against it though... Either way hope that ramble answers your question. Thank you very much for watching! DIY - Zachary

What year is your truck? Any idea if 2009 F250 is different? I want to replace my plain 1 piece glass with the tinted 3 piece unit like you installed. Any issues with that change that you know of?
@BackyardDIY-Zachary6 жыл бұрын
That truck was a 2001... It shouldn't be any different if you have a framed window. I know Ford switched to frameless windows but I am not sure of what year they switched. But if you have a frame it will be the same operation. Thanks for watching, if you have any questions further let me know. Thanks for taking your time to comment.
