I learned to do this trick in 1987 while installing the rear window in my 1957 Cadillac CoupedeVille 2 door hardtop. The gasket didn't exist at that time, but Mr. Lynn Steele himself used my original to mold the reproduction. That is why that particular gasket exists today because of Steele Rubber Products and Mr. Lynn's help. Incidentally, my 86 year old retired master Mechanic neighbor taught me how to do this. Our most important asset are our elders who can teach us all about life.

This is a simple job to do, but there are a few things you need to know that were glossed over. When pulling the lip over the pinch weld it is best to pull parallel to the glass. Roll the lip of the rubber just over the pinch weld and tap in the window by cupping your hand and center the area you are slapping. Never slap beyond the rope. The area at the rope is a potential stress point and if you tap beyond it there is a greater chance for breaking the glass. This is more crucial in a laminated glass then tempered as laminate isn't as strong. Work to just over the corners as shown and tap in place but not fully. once the lip is around the entire pinch weld you can tap/slap in the entire window. Follow the edge and tap around the glass until you see it seated properly. This is a tight fit so you may have to add silicone but I would only do this directly to the area which isn't seated properly. I don't recommend using silicone in this replacement as it can cause the window to slide to one side or the other and not center properly when the job is completed...I hope this helps.

I love installing windshields on 2 cylinder Honda cars. I use a nylon 3/16" rope and Windex especially around the top corners. Fit the rubber to the body, trim ends and glue together with Krazy Glue or similar. They actually make some black adhesive like that. Then put it on the glass with the rope on inside where it belongs to pop onto the pinchweld. I have done several alone but it helps to have a friend help.

Rubber on instalation loves heat getting it heated up by the sun is always , helpful ,the thicker the rubber the more sun you want heating it up before direct instal. Dont use to thin a cord ( it can cut thru rubber) not to thick ( take up to much room and rubber has no place to go) Think of it like a finger that fluidly slides across the seal lifting it up over the lip of the mounting flange. Always use spray rubber lube. Made for rubber.If you have a automotive glass place near by Get your string and rubber lube from them the lube they use is usually a commercial grade you wont find at walmart lowes or homedepot or even ACE . Go slow apply pressure to help locate the glass in the areas you want it. Dont want the glass ,to slip from between the seal . It does work. Ive done many even when I first tried it it was a continual success. The rubber warm to hot is good . Cold rubber ...NOT good. With a warm rubber gasket , lubericant and the right size cord. You will always be succesful.

I found out from an expert that if the window and gasket are positioned slightly to one side, under a quarter inch, the rope will pull out easier on the loose side. Then push/pull the glass over to the other side before pulling the rope on the second side. Much less force needed to pull the rope using this technique.

I used a tool that had a rope and I have done this before on a 1981 Mercedes 240d. For some reason though this time when I used this technique on my 1964 Ford pickup F250 today the rope kept ripping into the rubber. I bought another specialty tool that was a shaft with a small ball and that worked to slip the rubber over the pinched metal. It took 3 of us to get the job done.
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Hello, after speaking with our experts, essentially the rope is digging in to the rubber because of the force needed to get the rubber over the lip. Some soapy water would reduce the friction between the rubber and the metal lip. In theory, that would make it easier to get over the lip and reduce the force needed so the rope wouldn’t gouge. Using a secondary tool like you ended up doing is also helpful. Thanks for watching!

I'm surprised that this didn't work replacing a gasket polycarbonate window in my CNC machining center. After numerous attempts, it was considerably easier to work the gasket with an allen wrench than using rope. There must be some difference in the gaskets used for each application.

The best way and the easiest way.is to do rap the rope round the rubber. But do 4 loops too middle and 2 sides. Do 2 inches at a time on all 4 loops. Until glass is installed. It will keep the glass level on all sides .with out glass sliding up or down side to side. Making it harder to get in.

Hey there! Great question, if the gasket is a rope in style they are generally all about the same, so this process would work. Most of our seals are designed with a gap for the glass (which is 7/32"-1/4") and a gap for the metal sheet frame (1/8"). With fiberglass, generally it's a bit thicker than 1/8" so it won't fit over, and we can't guarantee a secure seal on fiberglass with a gasket that is made for metal. It could be susceptible to leaks or popping out. If the fiberglass is 1/8" thick, then it should work as long as there isn't a lot of flexibility allowing the glass to move too much. We hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions, and thank you for watching!

I saw someone using some kind of Sealer, before installing the seal/gasket. They said sometimes just a rubber seal will develop leaks.. Why didn't you use any? And is it the same with older cars with a chrome trim?
@SteeleRubberProducts
@SteeleRubberProducts 3 жыл бұрын
Simply stated, the installer just didn't do that for this vehicle. This could have been a situation where this was intended as just a show car- every situation is different. Typically we recommend using bedding and glazing compound between the gasket and the body of the vehicle. Here is a link to our blog post that goes into detail about this situation and the process: blog.steelerubber.com/the-secret-to-a-leak-free-windshield-on-your-classic/. As far as the chrome trim goes, generally that type of gasket has 3 grooves- the glass will go into the gasket first, then the chrome molding is inserted into the gasket, then the rope is inserted and then it's roped in. Thanks for watching!

Hey there, it sounds like you are doing everything right but running into a common issue with these types of gaskets. Assuming all the parts are correct, getting the rubber seated over the pinchweld is tough because the glass is fighting you and the rope is blocking the pinchweld from seating all the way in the channel. Once you get the bottom started and you're pulling the rope, constantly try to push the glass down and into position to get as much of the bottom on as possible. Then move half way up one side, get that in the best position, then halfway up the other side, and so on. Trying to make sure the glass is installed symmetrically. You do have to constantly guide the glass into position and it gets harder as you near the end. We hope this helps! Don't hesitate to call us at 800-447-0849 or email us at contact@steelerubber.com for quicker communication if you still run into issues. We are open Monday - Friday, 8am - 5pm EST. We don't sell this particular seal, or any slider window seals at all (yet) so we don't know about exactly how they are different from a stationary window seal. What we do know is that if the gasket has a locking strip, you should be able to remove the locking strip, reposition the window and reinstall the locking strip with no issues. I hope this helps you some. Thanks so much for watching!

Urethane Adhesive is applied with a caulking gun and used to glue in windshields while Butyl Tape (comes in a roll) is a very sticky, pressure-sensitive adhesive that is also used to glue in windshields. If either of those are what you've been seeing, it's because the windshield for your vehicle is a glue-in type. If you would like to email us some photos of your windshield, that would greatly help us in recommending which parts will work for your vehicle. You can email us photos to contact@steelerubber.com and one of our customer service representatives will be in communication with you. Thank you for watching, and we look forward to speaking with you!

@@SteeleRubberProducts oh man seriously? My belair is still at the place where I bought it so I assumed it was rope in style gasket. If it’s glued in that is so much better. Thanks guys. Any ideas where I could find a windshield for this car? Thanks

No problem!! Unfortunately, we don't have any recommendations for where to get the glass.
