was contemplating if i should stick with OEM bmw 0w30 or go for the fcp recommended liqui moly 5w30. gonna be doing my first oil change as well on the 340i. gonna do my brake fluid at the same time too.

Yeah everyone has their own opinion on which oil you should use. The climate you live in can also have an effect on what weight to use. I'm sure the 5w30 I used will be fine

​@@NWAuto yeah i got 5w30 as well, I'm trusting people that know more than me that the only reason BMW uses 0w20 is for fuel efficiency reasons. I live in the North East so I'm hoping going to 5w isnt gonna make a negative difference, with cold winters and all

@@toxikneedle liqui moly has a 0w40 which I would recommend I live in the north east as well and started using it because I just found out it was available, I used to use 5w40 molygen. With the 0w40 you get the benefit of the 0 weight for better cold lubrication and the benefit of the 40 weight being better for hard driving and modified cars since it performs better than a 30 weight at higher temps.

@@ganuv when i said oem bmw, i meant the oem bmw branded oil, they sell both 0w20 and 0w30. i’m aware that from factory 0w20 is what comes in our B58s

Before checking the oil, how can one turn over the engine without ignition as to get oil into the top mounted oil filter? Some cars have the ability to do a "Clear Flood Mode" but I am not finding whether BMWs can do that or not.

You don't need to prime/prefill oil filters on engines this small. that's a myth. just start the engine normally, it'll be fine. that's only needed on trucks with large oil filters that would take a while to build oil pressure.

In Europe BMW recommend oil change every 25000 kilometers which is too long for me. My 340i is at 11000 kilometers since last change and Id like to change now. BMW dont want to do it because its not due. Can I just change the oil and not reset the button and then let BMW change it when it comes due? (free services still remaining on the car) So the car is getting a second second service in between. I dont know much about modern BMWs so just checking if there is some sensors that will know I've changed the oil and cause issues

Same! 25000km is too long! i want to change the oil on my 440i now at 10.000km. My car is still under warranty, but I dont think BMW is going to cause issues just because a oil change.

@@as_play3553 I went to a well regarded independent specialist and they knew exactly what I ment. They dropped the oil and filter and left the service button alone so the car will ask for an oilchange at in about 12k as per BMW intervals. I recommend doing the same. Just remind the mechanic not to reset or it will mess with BMWs intervals and then do the reclmmended intervals as per BMW. So its getting oil change every 12500 odd kilometers

If I use car ramps instead of stands I would have to start car to back off of ramps. So would it be ok then to fill new oil into crankcase WITH car on ramps. Then start car after and back off of ramps? I know with your situation you could lower car to flat position before filling without starting it.

Yeah I did an oil change on my friends M340i and we used ramps. We just filled the oil while it was on the ramps. Definitely not gonna turn the car on with no oil in it

No difference using ramps. I use ramps all the time changing my oil on my 428i.

So after draining the oil out and refilling you have to run the engine to temperature before you can check the oil level is ok. What could possibly go wrong? The Diesel engines have both a proper dipstick and electronic measurement, shame that they didn't do this on the petrol variants as well.

Agreed, I always thought that was ridiculous. What if somehow one was to put the incorrect amount oil in the motor? You have to run it or even drive it just to know? Not very smart.

How the hell oil change shows 8000miles ? My 540i g30 says 30.tkm I do it every 8-10tkm how is this possible?

At 3:32 the next step is definitely not to measure the oil level. You forgot to replace the oil cap. Hopefully no nube has followed this step for step without the cap.

It wasn't level when I was changing the oil. Only when measuring the new oil levels

Sorry to keep asking you on this topic but I was told by a bmw service manager that there is approximately .4 quarts that get left ‘sticking’ on walls crankcase and other areas. That is unless you let it drain for 24 hours I’m planning on draining it warm for about 10 minutes or so. Also he mentioned to me that some oil is burned up even with 5k mile changes. He then recommended that I should not put in the full 6.9 quarts as it might overfill and said I should do 6.5 quarts. What do you think of that? I’m assuming you put in the full 6.9 quarts and you also do 5k mile changes?

I haven't heard about that before. I do every 6k miles right now. I remeasure the oil level after the oil change and so far the oil level seems to be fine

Drain all the oil and put in the capacity. 0.2 barely might remain but not like half a quart or anything. I’ve done that on my 428 all the time I do an oil change. 5 liter max fill I just drain the oil and put 5 liters back in and it always says it’s max on the oil level check.

You said your using 0w30 but in the description it’s 5w30

Yeah that was a mistake. The OEM oil is 0w20 and the kit I used came with 5w30
