I had the dealer tell me a similar price for brakes on my 325I. I did all 4, new rotors and pads for like $300 I believe, about $1300 less than they wanted and it was super easy. They have a lift, air guns etc and it would be so easy for them, probably an hour max. Not sure why they rip people off with that one, but that's a huge rip off service.

Hi Justin. Great video, just one note on the oil viscosity: engines with start-stop, modern turbos and modern engines in general go with thinner oil: reduce engine wear during start-stop cycles (cold starts induce most engine wear, the thinner oil helps), there’s a claim that the thinner oil helps the turbo cool (I did not investigate on this), the thinner oil also helps and provides better lubrication. Certified OEM oils of grade 0w20 also have a lot of additives that specifically help the modern engine in all the statements I’ve said above. I’ve discussed this at my local dealership when I had to do the car’s first oil change. There’s more to that oil than the viscosity grade. I’d recommend switching back to the 0w20 or at lest conduct more study on the matter.
@heavyweight6440
@heavyweight6440 4 жыл бұрын
0W20 oil is a VERY thin oil. It was introduced to reduce emissions and make fuel economy better since this less viscous fluid has less internal friction than a higher viscosity oil like a 5W30. Start-Stop is bad, you should program it to be not active anymore. Turbochargers are now around for 20-30 years in car engines. They have worked with 10W60, 5W50, 0W30 and will work with 0W20, but 0W20 wont really "cool" the turbo better than other, thicker oils. It will be on the same level in my opinion. Cold-starts: yes, thick oil, like a 10W or a 15W is quite thick and wont flow as good as a 0W or a 5W oil, but there is no need to have a 0W oil if it only gets like max -10°C in winter. A 5W will do the job very good, and even that - there are 0W30 and even 0W40 oils on the market if im correct. But be aware: the higher the gap between the number in front of the W and after the W ther more additives and viscosity enhancers they need to put into the oil because the base-oil they use is very thin. That doesnt make an engine oil bad, but it makes it expensive. If you get REALLY cold temperatures during winter its justified to use 0W oil. If you have mild winters there isnt really need to. "Thinner oil = better lubrication": basically yes, since the internal friction of the oil is very small. But the thickness of the oilfilm will also degrade, which is good for emissions and fuel economy, but not very good if you want to redline the engine often or have high oil-temps. The cussion between static and dynamic object (cylinderwall and piston) will deacrease which CAN be bad - depends on how you drive. I think its a bigger problem on diesels, especially the ones with DPF. There is the chance of diesel mixing with the oil which will lead to the oil grading down to a 0W15 or something like that. In my opionion it is the better idea to use 5W30. If you live in a country with high temps in the summer you can even go to a 5W40. 0W20 is to thin for my personal feel.
@georgealex19
@georgealex19 4 жыл бұрын
@@heavyweight6440 thanks for sharing your detailed input. I’ve had exactly the same rationale regarding oil viscosity until my current car’s 1.4tsi. Winters here go around -15/-20C at their worst, median around -7/-10, while summers go quite hot, 35/40C. My previous car and the one before had naturally aspirated gasoline engines. Being an European, engines here tend to be smaller, so the previous was a 1.6l unit, it used 5W40, for this climate that was perfect. But it had no start/stop, no turbo. My current 1.4tsi only sees the dealer’s service and for the first oil change I’ve had the same thoughts: “0w20 is too thin!”, but the dealer reassured me that it’s not the viscosity as much as the additives in this specific oil grade. I’d still be using the manufacturer’s oil recommendation, regardless of my classic oil know-how. The same was true with organic vs synthetic oils servicing periods. Organic would turn to jam, while synthetic still had half it’s interval. We’ll know if these thinner oils are crap, but on the long run. So far, my engine is working pretty sweet with it, but I rarely need to use the car so it only has about 9k miles (14k km) after 3 years, so I could probably put butter in it and it would still work, with my milage 👨‍🔧

Change it early and often. 0w20 for regular driving. If u are going to track it or give it a long road trip at high temps and into boost a lot go with an occasional 5 weight 30 it won’t hurt anything. Best thing is use a high quality oil like Liqui Moly! 4500-5k on a boosted engine will keep that turbo and the internals in great condition. Get an oil analysis if u want to stretch more out of it in between changes.

Great video. My one piece of advice on the cabin filter is to not necessarily reinstall it in the same direction it came out -- only because it is often installed in the wrong direction by whomever changed it previously (including the dealer)! I've watched a few videos on how to do this, and the filter that gets pulled out can be in the wrong direction, and the new one is then reinstalled in that same wrong direction. The arrows indicate the direction of airflow through the filter, which on the F30 is towards the FRONT of the car. (You did it correctly in the video.)

Great Video!!!! 10 year BMW Tech Tip!!!!! I would stick to using the OEM filter. I haven’t really come into this problem with the B58 or B48, mainly n52s up to n55s, but, the green o-ring with the OEM filters are the only ones which DO NOT cause sporadic vanos control faults. There is something about the way none OEM o-rings age that cause them to dry rot. Now that the B series engine has been in the market for some years, we’re starting to see the same issue with the large o-rings built onto the filters. I have yet to have a dry rotted o-ring cause a vanos fault on a B series engine but I have spent my fair share of nervous moments cleaning out bits and pieces of dry rotted plastic from the oil filter housing. Again, great video!!

Really loved the way you summed up working on BMWs Justin! You start with small stuff and begin working your way up. I've developed a collection of tools from working on my F25 and it's so worth it. BMWs can be very affordable if you do the maintenance yourself and will last a very long time if you treat them right. With the power of forums and software like Carly or ISTA, you can solve pretty much any problem on your vehicle. Even though my car is running fine, I have bookmarked guides for how to replace fluids in the transfer case and differentials so down the line I will already have good knowledge on what needs to be done.

As a dealer tech, I agree with most of what you said. Things to look out for. 1.Make sure you leave the wiper arm down between wiper exchanges. The arm will come down with out you holding it and break the windshield. 2.The screws are very easy to over tighten on the micro filter. This will crush the plastic door for the filter box. 3.Air filter isn't bad, BUT if you have an N26. Its easy to break the vacuum line off the air box. 4. You will by a new engine if you mess it up the oil change.

Our dealer switched our X3 M40i from 0W-20 to 0W-30. We live in Canada so I find the 5W-30 a bit thick for really cold winter days. I was skeptical of the 0W-20 and I think it's used mainly to make the CAFE fleet mileage in NA. To avoid making a mess I use a plastic bag and put the filter in right out of the oil filter housing.

I’m sure you do it, but for people new to DIY. Always a good idea to keep a binder of all service and repairs on any vehicle, especially Euro. Will be very helpful when going to sell the car, in reassuring potential buyers of the vehicles history. I know when I go to buy a used vehicle it is a very important aspect of the purchase, especially once they are getting a bit older and higher mileage. It also communicates to the buyer that you properly cared for and about the vehicle. And hopefully can increase the price (relative to comps) that you are able to receive when selling. If doing DIY, save the receipts in the binder with date and mileage of the service notated, and any other relevant notations DIY work will not show up on vehicle history reports (like Carfax) the way that service at a shop/dealer does. This way you have proof of what work was done and when it was done.

I have a 2011 E91 wagon. Last week I changed oil and both diffs. I always call BMW to see how much the service would cost me. They quoted $740.00. I ordered all my items needed from FCP EURO as always. Cost me approximately $120.00 for everything.

This hits home. I went to my BMW dealer complaining about how my auto start stop would not shift back into drive when coming out of a full stop. I figured my extended warranty would cover but apparently diagnostics are not covered. So $750 later , they diagnose that my car needs 300ml transmission fluid ☹️

Nice clear video. F83 M4 just back from main dealer for an oil and filter change and £338 lighter in pocket. Being generous that's around £200 labour charge. Either specialist or DIY next time.

Yes!! Great video! The BMW dealership maintenance center is very very overpriced!! I did some research when my f10 needed a new vacuum pump. So the dealer wanted to charge me $7000.! I went to my local machanic who did it for $700.!! Crazy!! How does BMW get away with over charging that much!??

There is an idea behind the wiper blades position. It's for highspeed drives on the autobahn. At 155 mph the wind can be getting very loud while it is traveling over the car ;)

@@justinbuice You can tell if you got them snapped on correctly at 155 mph if they're still on your car when you slow down!

Just did the cabin air filter and while it was easy-ish, it was way harder than any other car i've owned. And what sucked is I only had the T20 bit so had to use a wrench to get that open.

2:00 Concerning changing the wiper blades: I'd strongly advice to use a sponge or foam and place it onto the windshield, as the wiper arm may flip down breaking the windshield. This happens more often than you think even to professionals and is the main reason for windshield replacements.... However, Great Videos!!!
