Hello first of all very nice and detailed video. You look very knowledgeable about auto transmission and maybe you will be able to help me with a problem with my AT V4A51. Its 4 speed mountent on 2004 montero sport the problem is that my transmission neutralising out of gear and when it revs up it slams back in gear very hard, this is happening only in the mornings when the tranny is cold. We made a lot of diagnostics and there are no faults detected or stored and no N flashing or somethig like it. Range sensor is checked it doesnt switch to neutral the tranny just pops out of gear without obvious reason.This happens only after the first cold start for the day, the only think close i can find online is the "morning sickness " . Because me and the mechanics cannot locate the problem and i have set of refurbished solenoids im thinking of replacing all 5 of them to see if this help. Did you stumble in something similar in your experience or can you give me some advice on it? Is it even possible a bad solenoid to cause this ? I'll be very thankful if you can give me some guidance. Thank you for your videos and be safe!

I checked valve body plungers, solenoids. All elements are in place. I changed solenoids tcc and overdrive. But I don’t get results. What is your thoughts? 💭

Gary may I ask important advise. I have 2004 hyundai sante fe 2.7 fwd no 4 wheel drive. I was attempting to change the output speed sensor because Speedo and cruise control weren’t working. It was so stuck on the trans housing that I had to break it off but then the sensor fell inside the housing where the output speed ring is. I cannot afford a rebuild and it looks like you cannot just take the pan off to get it because the outdoor sensor is in an area as you said that’s very tight and nothing in there. So my question can I just put the new sensor on and drive it like that as I only use the car for towing my boat. Worst case scenario the only thing the sensor can break is nothing important correct?I mean what’s in that hole that the sensor fell into?No clutches no gears so can you tell me what it can break if sensor moves around and Will anything in that housing area effect drivability or will it just do what it used to do and that’s not read the speed?Id be happy if it just lasted this summer. The hole is so narrow a magnet will not pull the sensor out it needs to be perfectly lined up to come back out that hole and I give up. Pleased if you can advise me thanks.
@GaryFerraro2 жыл бұрын
Well, if this is the output speed sensor this is in the area of the differential , very possible the diff may chew this thing up, no pan to drop either, I'm assuming a fairly large piece fell in
@carolreem7622 жыл бұрын
Well first,thank you so much for taking the time to answer and help me.It was about half the sensor left on there. I had to break off all the plastic chip it away until hoping it would free up but no it did not. After sticking needle nose in hole and tugging on it for 3 hours it finally came loose but slipped down to the corner of the housing inside. Boy I was so happy to see this video then on that part of the trans you decided not to take it off ha ha my luck. From your explanation wich is as good as it gets I learned so much off this 1 video on transmissions then 20yrs of repairing cars.Its not 4wd so I assumed that section only has the disk that spins the sensor and that’s all I can break and the sensor would have to bounce up to even touch that disc. Maybe I’m misunderstood,is there any gears in that section that you didn’t remove the cover off of?The sensors condition now is stripped of the plastic down to where it’s just the 1 1/2 inch long metal core about width of car antenna and the plastic gear that sits on the sensor that the disc spins is still attached. This 2 1/4 inch long total length piece is sitting on bottom of that housing. If the worst that can happen is it breaks the spinning disk for output speed Im happy with that but I think your saying there’s actually a way it can slip further into a much more vital area? I assumed there was nothing major in that small space that you didn’t take off and that the oil passages were too small for the sensor to travel through out of that housing area. And I just don’t see any way of opening that area without taking trans apart wich is impossible for me. I was hoping there was a cover on the outside or an axle can be removed but I don’t see any of that as option.I’m forced to leave it in there and stick a new sensor on is where I think this may end. I’m very sorry for the long story I just was trying to get you all the info I could. Again really really appreciate it I’m stuck with no car to go fishing. I had just fixed so many things to get it ready for summer. I wish I had your knowledge of transmissions.My experience is with engines only. Watching your video I see what it costs so much to rebuild a trans even though parts are just couple hundred bucks.
@carolreem7622 жыл бұрын
Sorry I just understood what you meant by it’s in the area of the differential.Being this is a fwd car the way rwd cars have it in rear This has those gears in front instead of a rearend.I see now. But had you taken the cover off the output shaft sensor housing would there be differential gears in that small space?Thats really my concern if I just leave the broken old senor in there,how can it leave that housing that has a cover on it and end up in the differential gears if it’s a 2 1/2 inch piece. The only thing I can think of is if it’s the differential gears that are the ones that actually spin the output speed sensor. Apologies for my questions I know you would recommend removing it and doing it the right way but i cannot afford a rebuild.They would have to do everything you just did just to get that sensor out and you might as well rebuild at that point Wich I can’t afford. I’m pretty much gonna leave it in there, I guess I’m here hoping for some kind of good news Wich after seeing your video and that area being so small that you didn’t go in there and it has a cover on on it I almost felt a little relief thinking it has no where to go. It must have a oil passage but sensor is too big to pass through that If it’s a small passage, The only thing left is if there are infact any important gears Behind that cover you didn’t remove then I’m almost definitely gonna be without a car this summer because that sensor will absolutely move once oil gets flowing and few speed bumps and right into the teeth of the gears. But I still prey there aren’t any and it’s just a gear that spins the sensor for odometer reading. Thank you for your kindness of answering all your viewers questions your only 1 of a handful that do that.

I have a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe with this F5A51 trans. My vehicle hesitates to go into D and R upon warm up. But while cold seems to work fine. After warm up, it also slips out of gear after 1st. There is also an odd sound as it warms up, like a bleep bleep blip blipping like a vacuum squeak of some kind, sounds like its right inside the valve body cover. Makes that sound in Drive and Reverse, and for a while in Park, until i let it just run and stops again. I appreciate seeing the video tear down, because I wasn't sure if there was a filter inside this one or not. Clearly Not. Any comments on what i might find if I tear into mine? Or do you have recommendations on a rebuild kit? do you recommend Any links or preferred rebuilt kit brands? Any advice would be helpful. Need Help please Hello Gary Amazing video, lost the number of times I watched it, I'm an AWD Mitsubishi Verada (Diamante) enthusiast from Australia, and have a big problem with the F5A51 in my AWD Verada, based on your information I decided to repair the transmission myself but didn't fix it, the problem is that the car won't move when put in Drive and the Neutral light is on on the dashboard, in order to get it moving at all, I need to raise the RPM to 3-4000 and then it moves ever so slowly with a Clunking noise coming from the transmission, the transmission also overheats, and when I smelled the fluid (brand new fluid I just put in) it smelled burned. I have replaced the wave spring and the entire Planetary gears as well as most of clutches, but I made one mistake that I can recount, I didn't remove the washer from the valve body before removing the low reverse piston thus ripping it, I also fully tightened that big greenish bolt at the side of the transmission (not sure if it was supposed to be fully tightened or not) So the car won't move and when it does it's very slow and at high RPM and it hesitates to engage into gear sometimes it never does so I have to turn it off wait for few minutes and then turn it back on just to get it to the side of the road rather than middle, pump works and a new filter was put in. I would greatly appreciate your opinion on this. Kind Regards Cyrus

@@GaryFerraro OK here is what I did and what happened: this morning I noticed extra fluid in the transmission, removed some excess fluid from the drain hole, (the fluid that was fresh yesterday had turned brown and smelled so bitter a d burnet) turned the car on and being started from completely cold, it moved forward, but as it got hotter it lost the forward drive, however when putting on manual Tiptronic mode it moved for a little bit and then stopped, when putting in reverse it moved, although I didn't give it any gas and let it idle when reversing, it seemed that reverse somehow works however there is a constant clocking noise coming from the transmission, I should also mention that I completely tightened the 22mm bolt at the side of the transmission all the way in (not sure if I was supposed to do that) So in short when cold, it moves forward but won't shift, but as soon as temperature goes to warm it looses drive and I have to put it in neutral and then to drive again to make it move a bit. Reverse seems to work but clucks pretty loudly
