The Martlet was used as the mark of cadency for the 4th son in English heraldry. The 1st son inherited his father's lands and titles. The 2nd (if the first lived to adulthood and had sons) and 3rd were destined for the Church to serve as Priests in parishes where their father had a say in who could be the parish priest. The 4th son would be landless in relation to inheritancy from his father until he secured lands through marriage or through service to another lord and as such the martlet was deemed a suitable mark of cadency.
