After playing Top Tier jets for quite a while, I've come to appreciate the relative peacefulness of prop games. No RWR or voice warnings just blaring in my face. The piston engine humming seems quiet in comparison.

Fun fact: using the gear as an improvised air brake is real life accurate. One of the corsairs even has a little text in the cockpit suggesting it.

it was actually designed to be fake airbreaks as they didnt wanna add them on and compromise the wing strength and add more weight

More are coming (at least until the next game update drops with new vehicles). I try to mix things up, as lower-tier vehicles like this get literally 1/3 the views as higher-tier stuff and it kills my stats if I post too many in a short period.

Man the memories of flying the F4U-4 out absolutely fun plane to learn how to fly properly, fun fact Tim near the landing gear lever it even recommends in writing near the lever to use it as an airbrake and the air brake feature of the gear is shared with every Corsair variant in game
@PaiSAMSEN4 күн бұрын
Fun fact : While extra engine power, different armaments, and some aerodynamic refinement in later variant does improve performance a lot, its airframe is largely the same in all variant, which mean they all share a lot of flight characteristic with each other, such as maneuverability, wing rip speed, and energy retention. This applies from very late variant like F2G Corsair (BR 6.0 in air RB) all the way down to very early variant like F4U-1a (BR 2.7 in air RB). You heard it right, a BR 2.7 fighter have flight characteristic rivaling that of BR 5 fighter. The 1a, like most corsair, have optimal speed at IAS around 550 kph. Its control surface start to compress at around 650, but you can still maintain a bit of control all the way to 800. Its wing rip speed is at 885 kph. On a fighter at battle rating of 2.7. Of course, older engine and earlier airframe mean that you build up energy in F4U-1a slower than in F4U-4 or F2G. Indeed, it climb rate and acceleration is rather average for 2.7 fighter.... ....but you have the energy retention rivaling many of BR 5.0 fighter. Which mean, if your F4U-1a can achieve energy advantage and you know how to not bleed energy away wastefully, there's nothing any fighter at BR 2.7 can do against you.

I know i'll probably the the 'black sheep' (pun intended) among the aviation enthusiasts, but IMO, in the very strong competition of Mustangs, Spits and the like, it's actually the Corsair that is my all time favorite WW2 prop! She has that rugged raw beauty about her, that is so difficult to put into words.

The F4U-4 was a real step up from the overheating prone F4U-1 and the mediocre F6F-5. I actually felt confident going up against 109's and 190's in their respective fights as well as others. It may not be a superprop, but it's a very nice bird all round. One can see why the USN was so happy to get those after so long a wait.

I do apologize in advance if you have already done a review on it (I may have missed it while scrolling the aircraft reviews playlist), but I think the French F4U-7 with its SNEB rockets may be a good candidate for a review if you feel up to it. I quite like that aircraft with those rockets equipped for CAS when my friends only want to play ground RB around 6.0.

With the new br changes that came around i'd say the F8F-1 right after this one ends up being even much stronger for the br with the insane flight performance trading for slightly less firepower, but the F4U-4 is still very solid, albeit a little stiffer at higher speeds than i'd like it to be

G'day Tim, The dive brake landing gear is a neat trick & is a historical point at that. If I've got an F4U with bombs, I'm going to be using it as a dive bomber & it's an incredible aircraft in NF (sank the Battleship Scharnhorst with two 1000lb bombs in a recent match after diving from 5000 metres & through clouds). If you ever get into NF, clouds are your best friend against most AA especially AI AA as they'll not fire upon you until you break the cloud layer, This can make setting up dive/ glide bombing attacks work at a higher success rate. Funny I've never used this specific F4U but I may take it out following this video even when I have every prop Cosair (bar the AU-1, but the F4U-7 is the next closest historically).

In the history part of this story, there perhaps should have been a section on the brits who panel beat the carrier flying on the type and the US initially declined to see it as a viable carrier type... Perhaps as its a US plane in the US tree that would not be a fit, but its true none the less.

I have to pick and choose what I discuss so the intro segment doesn't go on for 20 minutes. With some of the "earlier model" aircraft (like this, a fairly early model of Corsair in the game) I leave a lot of stuff unsaid so I can go over it if/when I cover those other/later versions of the plane.
