That’s not a bad design, those two have been repaired before by the previous owner. Those are aftermarket PCBs, that’s why there’s no balance leads also. Cheers 👍

Since making this video I've repaired a few more and the early batteries dont have balance charging and were exactly the same.

Makita batteries are not wired the way you describe, ever. They would be long out of business. Early makita batteries don't have charge indicators and they wouldn't be tacked onto the main terminals like that. These have been remanufactured by someone and passed on as genuine. Highly unlikely to be 6.0Ah considering. The only genuine one was the one you weren't able to do anything with.

It is very scary until i read this comment. The author shall make his statement right about the bad design by makita.

@@Rickh4 you are right you can tell by the side of the battery and the slots it sold on Amazon so is the spot welder in no because iv done a lot for my self but I put layers electrical tape on the out side of the battery pack before I soldier the strip and board so I don't short it out myself all my battery came from a recycling center then I go and test Wich cells are good and make a battery pack 👍✌️👌💯🥂

I’ve got a cheap sealed ammo tin from eBay for all my batteries now! Just in case never tested but in theory if one of them pops I hope it don’t set on fire 🙌

i just came to see if Makita glued their battery packs in because i want to spray my battery's bright neon pink so no bugger steals them. never expected to get a firework show haha, well done staying calm and checking for thermal runaway. i use a ammo box to store and charge my battery's (lipo) with a fire alarm inside so if they discharge i can just pick them up and chuck them out the window.

I have lots of lipo batterys for rc cars and built battery packs and play with batterys like theses. I'm always very careful with them and understand the risks involved.

Good vid, I have to repair a few of these and wanted to see the construction and testing involved. I suggest for the jumpers you could use solid bare copper wire of sufficient gauge, it is better at handling heat buildup when recharging, and coat them using a liquid electrical insulation coating, it would make for a cleaner looking and lasting repair, if you're not in a rush. Also, I agree these batteries are of poor design.

I have a bucket full of toasted Makita batteries and I always figured they just shorted, though I have no issue putting in new cells if that is what is ultimately necessary.

Cheers for showing the repair, The batteries used in these packs what volt and amp is one battery and could you use higher rated amp batteries or would that not work with the smart boards thats in the battery packs

you can put in higher ampage cells to get longer run times there lg cells on some and others are u branded.the battery board will still work with them

Hey, just curious, did Makita upgrade their cell from VTC5 to VTC6 in their BL1860B?

they were always VTC6, VTC5 are 2.5 ah

Using insulating tape in this application is a really bad idea and you're just preparing for a repeat of the original fault (melting plastic). PVC insulating tape under that joint which you then solder, and may also further, be subject to high temperature in normal usage is a really bad solution; its only mildly better than the original shrink wrap on the factory cells -which failed in normal usage. A case for Kapton Tape at least.
@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT4 жыл бұрын
I took it apart and made some adjustments to the previous repair and used heat shrink already shrunk and replaced the tape with it. this was a very good point thanks for the comment.

As someone who trained as an electrical engineer, I certainly would not be wearing metal bracelets and rings to do electrical repairs, particularly on lithium batteries.

i noticed on my fake makita battery that the spot weld failed causing battery charging fault, how serious is it replacing just one cell? as them escooters all use 18650s cells and theres alot more than ten in them , seems a hell of a waste just for one cell

That could be avoided by getting a pair of wire cutters and snipping the nickel strip ends off first thing and wear gloves if you have on a ring.👌👍💯✌️🔥🍻🎄

I have BL1840B, the same issue for board , two red lights blinking, I couldn't find the PCB board for it , what I have to do now?
@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT2 жыл бұрын
test all the cells for 3.2v or more all should be the same voltage. if all the cells are OK then it could be a board issue or a melted nickle track to the battery.

Dude Bet that made your hart jump lol I had a lithium battery do a thermal run away in my mechanical mod` I through the mod and watched the dam battery flare up, I hope your wearing safety glasses when working on these battery packs, you only got one pair of eyes` no second chance, I damaged my eyes from getting three pieces of shared metal in them that had to be pulled out with tweezers after local ascetic drop, grinding while not wearing glasses, luckily never lost my vision only reduce it, you know how quick them batteries can react and ignite with immense force. Anyways appreciate the video `these battery packs are not cheap for a DIY person ` not so bad for persons in the trade Tax deductible lol

Hi - I have two makita li-ion batteries that would not charge. i bought and replaced the 5 18650 batteries in each battery. When i meter the batteries i get 16volts but I cannot get my DC18SD charge to charge either. I managed to get one battery up to 18 volts by charging from a Milwaukee bat but it still wont charge! Have you any ideas on what i should do? ty very much Graham
@Rickh44 жыл бұрын
Hi Graham. After 3 unsuccessful attempts to charge a battery for whatever reason, the charger tells the PCB never to charge the battery again. The only way forward is to replace to PCB as well. They are about £5 on ebay.

I find it weird how Makita are making several different innards for these battery packs, this is strange, I thought that genuine Makita packs have a clear silicon over the circuit board to stop dust making a track across circuit board and shorting the thing out, Also on the sides of the circuit board you should have oval holes, if you hold just the circuit board up to the light shining a torch at the front while looking at the back of the board, You should see a fine wire leading to these oval shaped holes, But if you only see one oval with a connected wire, and not the others, then only two batteries are being monitored for over charging, this will not be a genuine Makita, all of the oval holes should each have a wire leading to them, there should be 4 oval holes in all,each one with its wire, They should also have fuse and temperature sensor, and plastic surrounding the bottom of the batteries to protect them from the battery pack being dropped. The sides should have protected insulation covering the soldered nickle plates, And the label at the back should usually have loads of info in English with all its QC control pass an its other reckoning approval trade marks , I think there are to many fraud battery packs out there and they should never be left in the house connected t the power tool,
@FINDITFIXITRESTOREITBUILDIT Жыл бұрын
I purchased 40 genuine makita battery packs and had at least 7 different internals from the way they were packaged to the board design. it all depends on the amp hour and what tool there designed to work with and it's currant draw all depends on what the internals look like. I fixed most of them now.

A good project if you have Makita tools that still work well. However, it's also perpetuating finally leaving the trash Makita system completely.
