Go arounds aren’t that rare. Parallel runway operations are the main possible problem. Aircraft are to maintain precise headings. Maybe one of them drifted a bit? Also having the big gust of wind probably made it worse.
@maxdorotik9395 Жыл бұрын
Wind, unless severe wind shear and severe turbulence will not cause control issues. Parallel runways wasn’t a problem either, it’s normal operations. Both aircraft were on runway heading (280) Alaska followed ATC instructions to turn 340 that was intended for SkyWest. The controller was likely coordinating with departure and didn’t catch it right away.

2 Alaska Airlines events in ONE DAY. An attempted hijacking and a near miss. What’s going on with them? Ground the airline.
@maxdorotik9395 Жыл бұрын
In simple terms, Alaska followed and read back ATC instructions that were intended for the departing SkyWest. Instead of SkyWest turning 340 and further away, Alaska turned 340 and got closer to SkyWest. The controller (likely coordinating with departure control) missed hearing that and caught it later. Ultimately it is the controllers fault since the Alaska crew read it back, even though the instructions were not for them, the legal responsibility goes to the controller after the readback.

1:36 This is a very misleading statement. Go arounds happen hundreds of times, everyday, everywhere in the world. They are not uncommon. I myself have been involved in 2. They are routine and not risky when done correctly, in fact exactly the opposite. They are performed when the pilots determine an approach unsafe. You make it sound as if the go around itself is what was risky about this incident, not the loss of separation. The go around was not the problem.

As an individual in the industry..... im sick and tired of the media's overuse of the term "close call"... In the world of aviation safety and risk analysis, definitions and precision matter. Close call is not a utilized nor a defined term in aviation. So how can we measure close calls? "at least 10 close calls since the beginning of 2023", and "increase amounts of close calls." This is purely conjecture and not based in any reality. I will say this.. in general, by all metrics I personally work with and see on a daily basis in my job, we are becoming safer and these trends are going down... yet coverage of significant events is going up. It's the exact same thing as coverage of violent crime since the 1980s. Violent crime today is just a fraction of what it was decades ago, yet media coverage of violent crime in that same period has gone up by hundreds of percentage points. Ask most people, and their perception is that we live in the most dangerous time in the history of recorded statistics. That is objectively and verifiably false. Same story here with aviation. Thank you for always screwing everything up, legacy media.

It looks like the airport was using parallel runways, one for landing and another for takeoff. The controller assumed that the Alaska plane would be on the ground before the SkyWest plane took off. The Alaska plane doing a “Go-Around” had to fly the go-around heading, which was close to the other runway heading so the controller told the Alaska plane to deviate from the go-around pattern. The time separation for takeoff and landing on near parallel runways seems to have not taking into account a go-around case.
@maxdorotik9395 Жыл бұрын
PDX operates takeoff and landings on both parallel runways when active. Both planes were assigned to fly runway heading, no spacing issues. The issue is the Alaska crew read back and followed ATC instructions that were instructed to the departing SkyWest (right turn 340). If Alaska maintained runway heading and SkyWest made the turn, all would be normal. There is no timed spacing for simultaneous runway departures/arrivals usually. Ultimately it is the controllers fault for not correcting Alaska and thier readback of the wrong radio call.
@reecom9884 Жыл бұрын
@@maxdorotik9395 So the Alaska plane didn’t do a landing briefing on what to do on a go-around based on the published plates? The chart plates show the go-around heading and pattern. I would place the blame more on the Alaska plane for not adhering to the published go-around pattern and heading then the ATC. No wonder Alaska line is investigating the Alaska pilots.
@maxdorotik9395 Жыл бұрын
@@reecom9884No. I’m sure they did a landing briefing which includes go around procedures. Upon initiating a go around, ATC assigned Alaska runway heading and 3,000ft. At that point the go around procedure is not as published but instead ATC Vectors. Alaska will follow vectors for another approach so it is up to ATC to tell them where to go. Unfortunately the Alaska crew thought they were receiving instructions to turn right heading 340, but that was for Skywest not Alaska. Bad on Alaska for not listening to the callsign, but worse on the controller who now has the responsibility to correct Alaska’s error.
@reecom9884 Жыл бұрын
@@maxdorotik9395 Once the tower controller confirmed the heading and altitude for the go-around pattern to the Alaska plane, which is listed the same as the published landing plate data the only other communication from the tower controller would be the frequency to switch over to departure control for vectoring back into the landing pattern, which is outside his tower control area. Tower controller only gives heading and altitude before turning you over to departure control to leave his tower control area. The tower controller already had given the Alaska plane the heading and altitude to leave his tower control area. The Alaska plane was totally confused. The tower controller wasn’t expecting any further communication from the Alaska plane. The tower controller must have been confused by a transmission that was sent to him by the Alaska plane when he had left his tower control area.
