FAA Investigation thanks to Facebook video I posted with my Airplane & Drone (Thanks Drone Police!)

First and foremost, I know not all Drone Pilots (I am one) are running around reporting everyone making peoples lives miserable. I also understand why some make sure everyone is playing by the rules (The rules where forced on them, they have to abide by them, so should everyone else). I just think this situation could have been handled differently. It ended well but a simple question about Frame Rate on a Video I posted to a DJI Drone Facebook page where I made a Joke about flying both at the same time lead to an interesting (but educational) conversation with the Local FAA FSDO (Flight Standards District Office). This Video is a friendly reminder that anyone, anywhere can report something they don't like to the FAA and the FAA is obligated to investigate it. Fly Safe!

Fun Story, glad it worked out! 2 months ago I got a letter from a FSDO in Texas about violation I have made doing low altitude aerobatics. That was a fun battle proving I was not in Texas, my airplane has never been in Texas, in fact hasn't left PA since 2019 and I was working 300 feet underground in a coal mine at the time of the complaint! But, you are right, they have to investigate every complaint, he told me that as well.......

I got a phone call from the sky police over a photo I posted to a pilot group of flying through IMC. I was not the pilot operating the aircraft at the time, my instructor was. I asked him to take the controls so I could snap a photo. You can even see his hand on the yoke in the opposite seat in the photo. FSDO bro called me and after some back and forth, he told me he's actually in the same facebook group (local pilots) and saw the photo long before the complaint came in and thought nothing of it

In the EU they can and have revoked driving licenses for drunken riding a bicycle. Which really sucks even more if you're a bus driver or a trucker. So the principle doesn't surprise me. That said, I'm glad the FAA would investigate if someone did something actually stupid and reckless and posted it on youtube. I also think real drone enthousiasts would think two times before reporting 'apparently dangerous drone pilots' to the FAA. It only gives more ammunition to the people who want to ban all drones everywhere.

The first time I flew (I was just a passenger) was with my college boyfriend and we were in his dad’s little Cessna tail dragger. We were landing at his parents’ private field that had a telephone line right at the end of the short runway. So he had to stay high enuf to get over that and then really slip it in to get us on the ground. I knew nothing about this procedure and was terrified!! Looking back on it now I realize how much fun it was and that he was a good pilot 👏 👏 👏. (He’s flying for a big commercial airline now.)

I think your planning and intentions were sincere. i think it reflects well upon the FAA, your company etc. This is an example of the system really working including up to the point of the pilot intelligently discussing it. By the way, during my training, I had to fly with the chief pilot at my flying school prior to soloing. I loved landing exactly the way you did in your video, come in high and then drop down fast (under good control) and then flare. My instructor had not complained about it, but the chief pilot exclaimed "What are you doing! Landing on a carrier ?" He didn't like it much. I thought it was great, perfect control.... anyway, I like the way you handled this.

Wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't some of that peppered in. On another note, while only a complete idiot would try legal or not, flying a drone, composing and hold a tracking shot while side slipping into a greased landing on a soft field in a tail dragger you should be elevated to God like status for both manned and unmanned aviation a-like (assuming you live) Sorry that happened to you brother. I never realized this about flying. Why do they have to investigate every complaint? That just seems ridiculous. It's about money. It looks like they're doing more because they're doing stuff they don't need to be half the time. Which means more fines. It's all about what they can make us do, what courses, what licenses or taxes they can add to literally anything. Land of the free?

Thanks for sharing your experience, as a drone pilot myself from a photography perspective, just a beautiful shot. Unfortunately there are a lot of new technologies changing things. FAA just wants to keep the skies safe, but has gotten a lot of drone pilots radicalized “if you see something, say something” mentality.

Drone pilot here. Love big machine content in general too. Drone pilots get heated about rulefollowing because we don’t want to draw fire from the FAA. *Any* time someone does something stupid with a drone, it gives the government ammunition to restrict drone pilots more. The hobby is very much at risk, and people get mad when they think someone might be giving a bad image. Edit: I think that’s all really dumb and that’s a super cool shot.

Agreed. I remember around 2018 witnessing the wholesale rush towards overregulation by people who seem to get off on being the most obedient to the rules. "Why do you need to be at 400ft? Who needs to even be up that high??" I lost all respect for the drone community when I realized these people were falling all over themselves to give away what meager flight operations they had been approved for by the FAA.@@bryans8895

So raising the number of drone complaints to the FAA is the way to make the FAA not mind drones as much? The people who make these rules and laws specifically look at the number of complaints when deciding to ban drones. The person who made the complaint needs to be named and shamed.

I do tons of air to air work with helicopters and airplanes with my drones (DJI and my FPV drones) and I am always super cautious to post any thing from it because of people who see something and feel the need to report everything they see that they feel might be a violation of some rule. Drone police are a pain in the ass and make life a lot less fun. Thanks for the video and I always enjoy your work! If you ever make it up to Alaska let me know. It would be fun to link up and do some stuff together!

I was on an airliner once studying with my light on and a passenger asked if I could turn it off. I told him I was using it to read. Once we landed he asked me in a snarky attitude if I enjoyed my read and what I was reading. Told him I was reading over aircraft information and he got super excited. Then he said “I’m a pilot too, a drone pilot.” I wanted to laugh so bad. 😂😂😂

If you crash one of those into a house you are going to do damage and possibly injure or kill someone. We've gotten into the habit of thinking drones are small multi-rotor aircraft. Ask Ukraine and Russia what drones are. I have a private pilot's license and fly quads and model aircraft too.

The funny thing is here in PA there are security companies that boast having anti drone capacity around construction sites. I know one person that had that happen to them and tried using PA law to get the person charged, but the DA said no, so they went federal. Dam shame for the poor guy with the anti-drone gun.
@JasonPorter

Anti-drone products are actually a significant product area in the physical security industry now. They even have hunter drones designed for air-to-air engagement, that shoot nets or sticky foam to disable other drones. Most are piloted, but they even have fully autonomous ones that can be set to defend an area. It's kind of crazy.

@@juantimer I mean I don't disagree with you, but there are a ton of customers for this stuff. Some are government agencies, some are municipalities, some are sporting arenas. Some are just ultra-rich people who want to defend their private ranch or multi-acre compound from invasive ultra low altitude overflight. Imagine you're a celebrity and people are flying drones outside your bedroom window trying to get 4K footage of you naked with your spouse. There are a bunch of legitimate use cases for anti-drone defense measures.

Joe, Great video, great Post. Thanks for sharing. There are Drone pilots out there freeking over the FAA's obvious attempt to over regulate the drone world but this may have been one of those Karen's who try and go out of their way to make Drone Pilot's lives hell because that is their hobby (They have no real life). We all get uptight when we see the obvious rule breakers going 1500 meters up into man'd airspace because we know that means more heat on those of us trying to follow the rules. It is nice to know that the FAA does follow up on all complaints, just sorry some scatter brain tried to take a shot across the bow and made you a target. People need to grow up and get a pair. If they have a problem with something you post they should have the guts to reach out to you before screaming the sky is falling. Thanks again for a great post.

I'm a PP ASEL and commercial drone pilot (though I have to admit, I did that because it was so easy) and it is way too easy for people to misinterpret a joke or off comment. I've been accused of flying unsafely (photos I posted) and I had to point out that I wasn't the pilot, I was only a passenger. You have to roll with what you can.

Beautiful video clip by the way. No need to apologize - to anyone. Although, it was big of you to be concerned about what the FAA is "required" to investigate. The world is much, much different now. When I was growing up in the '70's, and joking around and someone had a problem with the jokes, we said "f*-em if they can't take a joke". I suppose it might be of benefit to put up a text disclaimer that "no pilots, planes, or drones were injured during the recording of this video". Thanks for the PSA!
