Yeah the next one i build i will make some changes, like the door, that was definitely an over sight for cleaning out the fire box. Other wise the stick burner works awesome!

I feel like your firebox should be attached higher to create a larger inlet port to the cook chamber. That’s just based on what I’ve observed in other offsets where the inlet port is about 1/3 the area of the end cap. Great video by the way. Nice job on the smoker, I have a perfect counterweight for a smoker that size, they are big monster bolts like 15" long and the nut is like 2 inches thick and big, screw half way one bolt into the nut and the other end of the nut another bolt then use some 1/4" plate angled back to weld them onto, two bolts and one nut equals 32 lbs double the nuts and bolts ie 4 bolts and two nuts and you got 64 lbs not including the weight of the 1/4 plate there welded to, I used just two bolts on my lid and man what a difference, open with one finger now.

Nice build! Given the gauge of metal, you may not run into this issue or have near the fluctuations, but one tip I've found for winter smoking is to drape a welding blanket over the cook chamber and it really helps to maintain cooking temps without stressing the burn box nearly as much.

Very nice build….. have you had any problems with grease fires? I’ve been building these cookers for about 30 years and one of the things that I’ve learned is to add a piece of metal/baffle in the bottom of the cooking chamber about 2” from the fire box to keep the grease from falling back in to the fire book. I’m not being critical of your work because to be honest it’s freaking awesome.

Well the temps dont fluctuate as much as a thinner wall smoker. Im not sure how long it holds the heat, but i can for sure walk away from it for 30 to 45 min and then only have to adjust the drafts. Awesome job! Gonna pick up some pipeline pipe soon to build one myself. Basically gonna copy you haha. How's that smoker holding up after all this time? You liking the size of everything?
@FabbinAdventures2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it works great, about the only thing i would add or mod would be to make the door side of the fire box open completely for easier ash removal, other than that its about perfect for what we need! Thanks for watching and commenting!

Love the build man, I have an opportunity to pick up a 24" diameter pipe, wall thickness is somewhere between 3/8-1/2(his words not mine lol) and the kicker is it's chromoly steel, any downsides to building with chromoly? What's your thoughts?
@FabbinAdventures2 жыл бұрын
That would be sweet especially if its free, dont know of any reason why not to use chromoly. Thanks for watching and happy building!

Fire box is fine, smoker has no probs hitting 350. It works awesome!

What would that cost to make normally? Great video and job.
@FabbinAdventures3 жыл бұрын
The price of steel has gone up over 30%, so if you had to buy all the steel, it would probably be $1500 maybe. I had a guy wanting me to build one and he priced it out to build a big square fire box, the fire box alone would be over $900 Your best bet is to find some scrap or used steel. I charge between $2000 and $3000 total to build them.

You might try building a reverse flow smoker. I did that with my offset stick burner and it made it MUCH better. Basically you need a plate in the bottom of the cook chamber that forces all of the smoke from the firebox to the opposite end of the smoker to even out the temp, then it flows up into the cooking chamber then back across. the flue is then on the firebox side of the smoker and the heat makes two full passes across the whole smoker. The only drawback is that its a pain to get the draft started.
@FabbinAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, i will build more and try a reverse flow then. Im actually building a couple more smokers for some other guys right now, so maybe someone will ask me to build a reverse flow. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Dude, you got skills. What did you use to get all that rust off and prep the steel for your clear coat? Do you have any vids on how you prepped / cleaned the steel prior to coating or painting it. I tried a wire brush on some rust, got some off but I can still see rust and it’s not real shiny bare. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Nice build. Just curious what made you decide to place the firebox where it's at? Was wondering how you determine how high or low to set it
@FabbinAdventures3 жыл бұрын
Well i just kinda copied some designs i liked, then set the height of the fire box so the "hole" between the fire box and cook chamber was slightly bigger than my smoke stack. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Ive been burning maple, bought a truck load from an arborist in edmonton. Ive heard you can use birch if you peel the bark off first. Ive also heard you can use a little tamarack every now and then. Ive been looking at getting apple, cherry or peach from b.c. There are options, thanks for watching and commenting!
