Viktor played every world champion since Aljechin's death and achieved at least a draw against every single one of them. For me, he is among the top 3 of "strongest players who never became world champion". (The other two being Akiba Rubinstein and Paul Keres.)

Fabi was 19, Viktor was 80 years old. Even at this age he was incredibly strong. I will always remember him, his two World Championship matches against Anatoli Karpov and many of his wonderful games. Viktor lived for and through chess. May he rest in peace!

He was a legend 10 time world champion candidate, among the few who win against Bobby Fischer. He won the World senior chess championship title in 2006.

At the time of the tournament, Fabiano was in the top 25 players worldwide (not yet in top 10) and had a rating of 2721. Viktor, on the other hand, was well past his peak but at age 79 still had a respectable GM rating of 2544 and turned in a performance rating (how strongly he played in the tournament itself) of 2632, picking up 6.0 points from 10 rounds of play. Korch "the Torch"!

#suggestion I really enjoy the cross-generational matchups (this, Anand vs. Tal, etc.). Not sure if this was the only game ever played between Caruana and Korchnoi, but you could do a "The Only Game they Ever Played" mini-series with more such matchups.

For me you are THE great chess ambassador. Some people simply ended up learning chess because out of nowhere during lockdown youtube recommended you to us. I learned chess this year and anything and everything about the chess world and history I've learned through you. I'm sure young Viktor Korchnoi and many other chess generals in heaven are so thankful to you for reciting their epic battles for our great pleasure. Korchnoi's strategy is magnificent. There is something so calm about him... Somewhere I have a photo of Korchnoi at the European team tournament in 1992 held in Debrecen, Hungary. Kasparov was there, but he preferred coming late rather than be there during the short photo op period at the beginning of the game..... On the other hand, I sat next to him at the hotel (Arany Bika) bar, and it was like sitting next to an open fridge.

Seems computer aided generation has still lot to learn...I can only imagine how many decades ahead Caruana is in terms of theory and computer aid in this game, while Viktor is just sheer skill...by this age even your calculations ability tarnish to a great extent....truly amazing!!!!

No if you look closely a picture of Mr. Barnes face covers Viktors before he shows the photo of Magnus and Tari. That is what he's referring to. Then when he shows the Magnus picture he says "not that" again. No anesthesia or confusion involved

Another one to add to the list of players who never became grandmaster / world champion, probably because their face didn't fit, was Rashid Gibiatovich Nezhmetdinov. He apparently had other disadvantages as well, he started playing chess seriously when he was older than his contemporary GMs for example.

Korchnoi always had Tal's number 14-5-29 record. Prior to 1970 he was 11-1-17. He said Tal was a "routine player".

At 75 Korchnoi was still in the top 100 players. That could give an idea of the strength of the 60s, 70s and 80s generations.

Viktor Korchnoi is one of the greatest players to have never become a WC. Fabi was 18 here and Viktor was 80!!!! This game also made him the oldest player to beat a 2700+ player in classical time format! He was ranked as high as 17th at 68 years old!!! Compare that to Anand ranked 16th at 50! and we're praising his longevity.

#suggestion Can you show all 4 games of Fabi against Korchnoi. I mean the remaining 3. You have shown the last game between them. Here Korchnoi equalise with Fabi winning 2 and loosing 2 against Fabi. All the games are fun to watch

Viktor Korchnoi, born 3/23, 1931 was a couple of months from his 80th bday when this game was played, and Fabi was entering his prime. Another example of how great the players of Fischer’s Era were. It appears VK was able to maintain a high degree of neuroplasticity into old age, adapting efficiently to high-level play in the “computer age” of chess ♟

At first I thought this was some kind of pretend fantasy match. Then I remembered what a long career Viktor had. In late 1972 he was asked who had the best chance to beat Fischer. Korchnoi replied: “no one can beat Fischer at present.” So Karpov was their choice instead of Viktor.
