Fabienne Jacquinot's September 1952 recordings of the Dohnányi Variations on a Nursery Theme Op.25 and the Strauss Burlesque in D Minor, both with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Anatole Fistoulari. Both performances were recorded at EMI's Abbey Road Studio No.1, the Strauss on September 19 and the Dohnányi on September 22.
Jacquinot was a pupil of Yves Nat and was a truly marvellous pianist who played with both remarkable strength and refined sensitivity. Although she recorded a number of discs in the 1950s - ten works for piano and orchestra for MGM/Parlophone between 1951 and 1953, plus records of solo works - and more solo albums in the 1980s, she seems to have slipped into obscurity. She died just a few years ago, her greatness unfortunately forgotten.
A vivacious pianist capable of exquisite refinement, Jacquinot plays with great verve and attention to detail in the two works shared here.
