My god thank you so much for posting this. I'm writing a dissertation on Ravel that relies heavily on early recordings like this one, in which the performer has had some artistic connection to the composer. Franz Joseph Hirt organized a Ravel festival in 1926 in which Ravel participated. This is fantastic.

If I start playing Lipatti at bedtime it’s a sleepless night for me. I had a dream that Lipatti played the Waldstein for Beethoven who promptly got his hearing back. If indeed there is a Lipatti Waldstein out there, OMG I can’t wait!

Many thanks for this upload. I noticed that the sound from upload superior is in comparison with other releases of this nocturne from Lipatti. Do you happen to have a flac file form the transfer from Tom Jardine? that way lipatti can be enjoyed in the best possible sound quality, which he deserves!

The playback of old recordings is often faster than it was played. If you have speed control and you know what key the songs are in, you can match the pitch and it will also correct the speed.
@ThePianoFiles16 күн бұрын
These are at the right pitch, therefore at the right speed.

292 likes!? It should be 292,000 or more. Every pianist and pianophile should listen to Ms Meyer. Quel élan, quelle élégance, quelle joie de vivre (malgré quelques petits « accidents ») ! Listen from 13:40 ... Magical playing! Thanks for posting.

A quality often overlooked in both Lipatti and Chopin was their sense of humor. Chopin, especially in Poland among family and friends, was a mimic and caricaturist of almost Python drollery. You sense this as well in Lipatti’s writing (too human to be criticism) and his compositions but particularly in his phrasing. For all the classical restraint there’s a dash, a swashbuckling brio that’s wonderfully alive to all possibilities. Lipatti and Chopin were not “sickroom” tragic figures. They were too vital for that. Thanks as always for sharing.

Beautifully expressed! Each student of Lipatti I interviewed talked about his incredible sense of humour.

Orlando’s introduction to Lipatti exactly mirrors my own. I worked at the HMV shop in Oxford Street, London in 1970/71 where we had the biggest collection of piano music on record in Europe at the time. One of the more senior staff in the classical department introduced me to Lipatti. While I worked there I made sure we got every piece of Lipatti available on disc into the stock and I bought a copy of everything available. Sorry to hear about Madeleine’s passing. There is something majestic about Dinu Lipatti’s sound; he made the piano sing like a human voice; his legato was quite extraordinary. There are very few pianists who would inspire the kind of generosity and concern that was shown for Lipatti; there was a reason for it; he was both a piano genius and a gentle, beautiful spirit. Can’t wait to hear this.

We had a constant stream of music students from the Academy, College and Guildhall asking for model performances they could emulate. Everyone of them that talked to me got a copy of the Lipatti from the Great Instrumentalist series. OMG, can’t wait to see the film footage.
