If the Executive Committee appoints him to the AD HOC committee, then he is 'worthy'. Perhaps he has something more to bring than experience as a mechanic to the committee? Even better eyesight would be enough or a family discount at a local burger joint. Diversity in a committee is the best way to avoid Group Think.

I watched this video when it was released a few months ago, but decided to watch it again tonight. Just wanted to give kudos to Michelle (and/or whoever is helping her with the editing) for the way this video is edited. It's cohesive, fast, tight, and it tells the story well. It has been great watching the progress and success of this channel (and the rest of the Utah gang). Good camera work and editing deserves a lot of the credit for that growth.

Peening it brings the welded area back to a relaxed stated. That way the is no stress where welded. C32 rod high in nickel you use on cast iron

For any cast iron metal welding. Use Inconel - chromium alloy welding rods. (Inconel 600) welding rods are self stress relief.

When the weld cools, they shrink. We usually use a cold chisel directly on the weld seam to cause it to expand toward the cast iron and reduce the weld line attempting to pull the cast apart. If there is a tall bead on your weld, the air hammer probably does the same thing. We would also use nickel rod which is softer and can be hammered, again to release the tension on the casting.

I really enjoy the fact that you show when things go wrong! I rebuilt the engine in my first car and put it together to tight so I had to push start it unless it had time to cool off. I'd park it on a hill or had to have a good friend to help push it . Fun days

That's a quality 'recovery' when you can break/compromise every rig except the trailer puller you brought. You don't often get such opportunities; one must grab them as they show up! At least you got home!

I’ve welded several cast pieces, with great success. First clean and “V” the pieces and then heat them, just prior to welding with ni cor (nickel) rod. Once welded, the best thing is to throw it into vermiculite, so it cools slowly. I have used a ball pein, or air chisel to relieve stress/pressure, but with less success. The heating, weld and long cool period seems best.

I remember my uncle would weld a base weld with nickle rod, then weld over with mig welder. He was a Forman on road paving crew, and later worked on city firetrucks and heavy equipment.

For the future Paul you can weld cast with the stick (MMA) you have on the truck with 316 stainless rods but you still have to pein it! That's where the ball pein hammer gets its name. Peining as it cools changes the metallic structure and takes away the stress from the extreme heat of welding.

Years ago an old quarry mechanic welded my heirloom dinner bell that was cracked. He heated it, used a nickel rod, and peened it with a ball peen hammer till it cooled off. Thing has been outside 40 years later like it never happened. ❤Fab Rats

we used to weld two trans pans together to make a deep one and then put a heater core inside the lower pan. you can use a rv pump and coolant to a cooler with fan or in front of radiator or just run your heater hoses to it. You end up with a water cooled trans pan. works great in mud trucks where the trans is completely covered and gets no air. They sell the cooled pans now nut allot of money.

I have often welded cast up and then throw it in the oven to bring it down slowly. Mig works great on hot cast. air was good idea to unstress it.

On my square body Chevy I have the steering box braces and frame steel plate reinforcements from ORD. I also drilled out my steering box threads, and put 8-grade studs through it so it has nuts and washers on both sides of the box and frame, thus I am not using the steering box threads anymore to secure the steering box to the frame. I also have cross over steering as well from ORD.

I got myself a CJ5 , started out collecting parts, broke my body, been sitting around for 20 pluss years.... just need to start putting back together. Got the Ford air conditioning compressor for on board air, tank, full cage tubing (bent) 8274 winch, (sitting on bench) lower geared axles, .....life has its exits and onramps. Glad you were able to weld that C.I. E-309 is often used but always covered with an asbestos or Welding Blanket for slow cooling. Well Done. A lot of ingenuity used today! Great Scenery.
