They grind off the weld around the "belly" of it so they can re-build it anyways. It needs to be super clean inside and there are "vanes" inside and some have clutches inside, I believe Paul's does. I never got to see inside of them, we just pulled em and had them pick 'em up for cores to be re-built!

@Fab Rats An idea you may or may not like, we used a swamp cooler water pump sitting in a large coffee can or bowl to pump some solvent thru the lines and tranny cooler to flush it out, and then some clean trans fluid flushed thru also with the same pump system to finish off the flush job! I of course don't have to tell you, but I'll say it for the less informed, the fluid you flushed the solvent out with Must Not be re-used! It gave it's life for a good cause...

You are probably tired of my recommendations by now, but I got another! It looks like your adapter on the transfer case that you put the studs in is aluminum. Since you are likely to have that thing together and apart a million times in your lifetime I recommend putting solid metal thread inserts in the adapter plate. Keenserts is what I use. They won't lossen up over time and you won't be fighting with studs loosening up. As always, I love the content and your teams delivery! This is pretty much my favorite youtube channel!

You sure made rebuilding the transmission look easy. I always thought that special pullers and snap ring pliers were needed to rebuild one, guess I was wrong. The 400 turbo and the powerglide transmissions were two of GM's toughest transmissions that I know of. I have 5 or 6 powerglides but only one 400 left laying around. One of the powerglides doesn't use a torque converter it has an on/off valve tapped into the front pump. I used it on the circle track. Less rotating weight for faster throttle response. The FJ is a one-of-a-kind, well built crawling machine. Can you imagine how much it would cost to have one like it built if you couldn't do it yourself?
