A quick video explaining how I design and print the sewn-on patches for the 6oh5oh tees and hoodies.
The main goal of this process is to ensure that the top layer of the design is free from visible layer lines-I can’t stand them!
To achieve this, I print the designs upside down, with the face of the print in contact with the print bed.
By doing this, the design can imprint the texture of the print bed on the top surface, resulting in a smooth, clean finish without any layer lines.
Additionally, I use support material for the first white layers to create an embossed effect on the design. Once the white portion is printed, I pause the print job, replace the filament with a black version of the flexible PLA, and continue printing until the design is complete.
This printing process creates a two-tone texture for the design. The top white layer has a smooth, clean texture, while the black layers have a soft, velcro-like texture. This approach adds a special touch not commonly seen in other patches or sewn-on designs.

Love the Idea! I am doing the merchendising for my local (non-profit) Esports Club and I would love to try to recreat this for our merch. Is there a specific flexible pla that you can recommend? Do you not have an AMS or is there a specific reason why you stop the print to swap Filament? How did you create velcro-like texture in software? Would you mind to share an example file? Did you run into problem at the beginning when sewing the parts on? Is there a specific hight that you can recommend? Did you experiment with 3D textured plates? They might create a really cool effect on the text.

Thank you! I'm planning on creating a video that will go into more detail about this whole process for the QR codes, but to answer your questions: I use the Ataraxia Art Flexible PLA without an AMS, as the filament is too flexible. That's why I have to pause to swap. The velcro effect is created because the design is upside down on the print bed with the support material. Once the support material is removed, this effect will be made. Sewing the print together is no problem. Just give yourself enough stitching area around the edge. You would have to experiment with heights, but around 1.6 mm to 2 mm should give you a clean top surface. I have yet to experiment with different print beds but check out @kaizen3dprints. He goes into great detail about them. I hope this helps!
