Great job on the K&T so far Adam. Troubleshooting hydraulics is always a bit of a chore, especially when nothing looks drastically bad. In my opinion, from what I've seen, I think you're right on the money with all your diagnosing. I've seen a few jobs where its literally hours of work to replace a 50 cent o-ring or a 5 dollar seal that shut down a machine. Looking forward to seeing the K&T throwing chips. Thanks for another great video. Ian Little

Looks like you are really getting a handle on the inner workings of the K&T. When you first opened it up, I thought OMG how can anyone understand that mess of gears and hydraulics. I think you have done it right by methodically inspecting and looking for problems. The difficulty of disassembly and reassembly makes changing one thing at a time and checking if the unit is fixed, realisticly impossible.

Great job Adan, I am hoping see you at Stan's. I do aircraft tubing every once in a while there is no way to hit it first time, so I just take a scrap piece of tubing and mark it off say in 2" spacing between bends. Go and bend it, see how it came out and adjust your dimension marks plus or minus as necessary. The second piece always fits. Craig

Nice older tubing bender... when I needed to get one for doing 1/2" stainless tubing at work, I got one that needs to have an "anvil" riding in the channel with the tube... I need to work up a box that'll keep the parts with the handles... Also, it's nice to have a protractor - even a crude one - on the bender... Cheers, Eric

Love both videos today Adam. I had to laugh when you went for that last little tweak on your fitting. SNAP! I was actually thinking the same thing! Been there too many times. :-) your videos are brilliant and makes me want to find a good machinist that needs a shop rat to take care of maintenance while relearning the trade. I have worked on Swiss automatic screw machines back in the late 70's but I was not the set up man as my math is ok but that arithmetic always gets me in trouble. (My old foreman's favorite quote)! Got in to VW repair after that and met some amazing Porsche/VW machinists at Lightening Machine in San Diego who did all of the high end engine work in So Cal. I worked for them doing heads flywheels and rods and enjoyed it very much. My training was progressing but I took an opportunity to start a silkscreen business with my dad. I regret not staying in the trade. Although getting into construction did get me to Kauai in 1992. Btw could use another machine shop here. :-) see you at the bash!

My thoughts on strainers. Do not use them for hydraulic intake. Just leave the suction tube 1" off the bottom of the tank. Thank you. You are doing great.
@jusb10669 жыл бұрын
***** actually i agree with you in part, i think the strainer he has is the wrong one, it will all too easily allow it to pull in air and it lifts the pipe up too much from the bottom, there isnt very much oil above it, although i think he needs some kind of strainer still

A little tip for the future, when bending pipe, there is a formula, I can't remember at the the moment of writing, but see Student Study Section, How to bend copper pipe accurately and efficiently.It's something like 1/"2 the thickness of the pipe plus the length of the bend ,, or something! This works with all round stock, pipe or rod of any size. Also you could have used annealed copper pipe , which you could bend literally with your fingers, then re heat and allow to cool to regain it's strength, because you are not dealing with high pressures here, to stop the pipe collapsing just pack it with damp sand, or use a couple of plugs , freeze it then bend it! Just a tip hope you don't mind!
@oldschoolcopshop21949 жыл бұрын
Adam Great Job with one possible exception, I wasn't clear in your video if you wire brushed the inside of the fitting after you brazed it. This should be done because you applied flux to both the pipe and the fitting. The heating during brazing will make a flux crust much like the flux we chip off after welding and it can break off in operation and contaminate your system. I always coat only the pipe or tube being pushed into the fitting with flux and never the fitting or what will end up being the inside area of where I am brazing. This way the flux will not contaminate your system and there is always the right amount of flux right where you need it. If you get a chance watch Halligan's video that he just did on brazing as it is spot on. I'm don't mean to be criticizing but trying to head off a problem if you know what I mean. Keep going as I want to see the mill up and running soon. Regards, John

I think i would have started the bend a little sooner, then made a 45ish (or less) bend on the bottom while it would sit the way you have it, that would have raised it a little, and given you hand clearance while sitting parallel to the back of the gearbox. But the way you have it should work too ;)

Excellent suction tube replacement job Adam - vast improvement on what was there before! Frankly I'm surprised that the filter is as close to the surface of the oil reservoir as you appear to be suggesting -does your hydraulics expert or yourself see any possibility of air bubbles being sucked in when the machine is working due to oil draining back to the sump?
@Abom799 жыл бұрын
Dan Whiteford I have nothing to show the exact placement for the filter, or if K&T even put on on the machine. Many systems dont use one at all, just a line in the oil. I sure hope it works out fine.
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi51849 жыл бұрын
Abom79 I have repaired 2 K&T S12 that had similar problems with the feed and rapid traverse. Both of them had inlet screens like yours. One had a cracked inverted flare on the top of the inlet tube so I cut off 1/2 inch and reflared the tube. I did that through the access on the side, not easy. The other mill had a previous owner who thought all oils are the same so as the ways used up the oil he topped it up with used motor oil. Eventually it quit working so he sold it. I had to do a complete teardown (table, saddle, knee and power unit) to remove all the sludge. You can live with some internal leakage but if you were to test that flex line that was on the inlet you will find it was sucking air or collapsing, being intermittent and gradually getting worse. I love those machines. Probably the best mills ever made in that size range. I believe you're on the right track and will have a good running mill shortly so I expect to see lots of chips soon.
@Abom799 жыл бұрын
Moholo 88 interesting. Good to hear from someone who's been into these machines before. When you fixed ths feed problems was the inlet tube the only problem you found?
@experiencingtechnicaldiffi51849 жыл бұрын
Abom79 The one with the cracked tube when I opened the side cover the screen was laying on the bottom and would move when I touched it. I thought it was just loose until I took the fitting apart and saw the crack. Fixed that, did a lot of cleaning and refit the gibs. I used that mill for several years with no other troubles. The other mill got all new O-rings and seals because of the wear from the bad oil. It worked good but had a lot of wear on the ways so it eventually went to a machine rebuilder. I saw it later and it was like a new machine (and priced accordingly). An absolute joy to run. They didn't even open the knee. Testament to superior design. By the way, you need to take some square tubing and shafting and build a parking crane for the vertical head to keep it off the floor. They were an accessory that should have come with the head but were optional. About the third time I had to clean the chips and munge off AND use the hoist to pick it up I built one for each mill. There is a hole in the top of the machine just for that. It will save your time and back.

Are those full flow fittings on the suction tube? BTW, that's a nice clean tube.
@WAVETUBE849 жыл бұрын
Maybe the suction hose was collapsing??? If the filter became clogged, or was just causing enough resistance, the suction tube "could" collapse. That is if it was a flexible line??? Does the electric motor turn the pump and the transmission gears for the shafts? The hydraulic system just for changing gears?

Nice job on the pipe. Just a pointer on using a tube bender. If I can explain it so you can understand it. You don't use these benders to often I see. You put the line on the pipe correctly. Now when you place the pipe in the bender put the line looking at it from I call it the end there is a half circle to the round die Place the line ether to the inside of the half circle or to the pipe diameter away from the inside of the half circle . depending if you want the pipe to go over an object or inside an abject. This sounds confusing and it is if you don't use them daily . something I do when I silver solder. 15% for copper or 45% for steel when it soldered once the solder sets up and cools a bit I quench it with water to temper the pipe. Right or wrong I don't know done it this way for years. I do Refrigeration work and things vibrate it seems to help keep it from cracking .
