I love how you are able to do mathification on the spot like that, and the structural drawing at the end......priceless👍

If you make the top and bottom of the truss structure above and below each other rather than side by side like a ladder, I think you will be stiffer and able to lift much more. The other consideration is if your winch will be at the top or the base of the boom. At the base, the cable will add a multiple compression force on the boom length. The downside of the wench on top(hehehehe) is extra weight and a rotational force off center as the cable spools from side to side. Just some thoughts from my own idea for a trailer mounter version i have thought about. Looking forward to your project.

I'm thinking the structure will need to be like a ladder so it can lay flat on a 20' trailer. The tractor will need to be able to drive over the structure and park on the trailer so it all can be hauled around. The winch I'm gonna use to start is already built into a structure that is setup to slide into a trailer hitch receiver. The structure the winch is in, the winch, and it's battery will add some weight at the top for sure.

Man, your feelings about working alone are so much like mine it's scary. Sometimes an extra set of hands can be a help, but most of the time they're just in the way, and a distraction. Keep chuggin.

SpaceX did the same thing day before yesterday. They hanged 2 big vinyl sacks from the lift arms of their rocket launch pad and filled them with water to verify the arms could take the weight of the rocket.

You have very creative ideas CB, building what you need to get the job done. Do you think some type of outrigger would be a good idea? Take care

Thanks...and yes...some kind of outrigger...legs...and/or tie downs to something wide...maybe the trailer

Hey CB, my name's Devin Everitts and I work over in Weston, WV at C&M Precision and I was wondering if you had any tips for vertical aluminum spool gun welding. I'm currently running 4043 at 450ipm and 24.0v with 35cfh 100% argon in the flat position. I'm making a truck bed for a guy and I'm gonna be welding the c-channel for the frame of the bed later this week. I've been doing spray-arcing for flat positions, but I'm not sure if spray-arcing will work for vertical or if it'll just burn through. If this is a little out your ball park I completely understand. I know alot of people only really weld aluminum using AC Tig, but I've never used a Tig too much nor do I have an AC welder. The guys over at airgas were the ones who told me about you a couple of weeks ago and said you've talked about the Primeweld machines before so I figured you might even have some experience with the exact welder I've got (the 285 Multi-Process Primeweld). Even if you can't help, keep up the good work man.👍

Hi Devin...thanks for watching and commenting 👍 Best tip I have for welding vertical up with the aluminum MIG is same as any other position with aluminum MIG....tip is simple....JUST FU@KIN' GO!!! When I say "Just fu@kin go" what I mean is point the gun at a fairly sharp angle uphill with pretty good heat and as soon as you start welding travel quickly in the direction you want to weld...don't try to manipulate the gun with aluminum and try to avoid any stops or hesitation...the idea is get in and get out without letting that aluminum heat up and become unweldable...if you need a big weld then run it in multiple passes rather than try to weave it out wide and if need be you can let it cool some between passes....really hot aluminum don't cooperate with MIG

Doozin some mathafications dere man!😅 I was noticing how the pipe you welded on top of jib arm could be used as a means to support over the top with guide wire or strapping to make stronger, as you know triangles(with brace) are super strong tension on top & compression on bottom! Just an idea if you get what im sayin here.

CB! Do not put yourself up on any type of a Jinpole or homemade lifting device. I'm an old school lineman. 10 feet to 600 feet world. I've seen people die doing the same thing you are thinking about. That pole assembly will shoot you off into the sky like a fishing Rod shoots bait. Stay on the ground, or only use bucket devices made for the job. A one man, homemade bucket truck, is a receipe for a major accident. JUST DON'T DO IT! STOP RIGHT NOW!
