With due respect the president does not have the prerogative to do what he or she wants. It must be informed by policy and the constitution. Putin is a war criminal. The president does not have to make decisions or statements that jeopardise the interest of the country. Ukraine was part of the USSR and so supporting Russia claiming that it supported SA and not recognize Ukraine is disingenuous. Many ANC people were trained in Ukraine.
