Whoa whoa WAIT. A gust of 216 miles per hour? That might be the strongest gust ever recorded in an Atlantic storm. And my, what a giant storm.

I remember Ivan well. It was still bad when it reached Birmingham 200 miles inland. It tore Gulf Shores and Pensacola Beach to shreds. If I remember right that was the hurricane that destroyed the Hangout and the Flora-Bama too. Ivan kind of gets overlooked these days due to hurricane Katrina hitting a year later.

We were living in Cantonment, FL (you all know it as the place with the stinky paper mill on the way to Pensacola from Alabama) and evacuated to my sister-in-laws house in Bessemer. This is memorable not only because of the storm, but because this is when I found out I was pregnant (suprise!! Try reading a pregnancy test by candlelight) with what I found out a couple months later, were my twin boys. They were born April of 2005, and no, I didn't stick the name Ivan on either one of them!! I can't believe it's almost been ten years since this happened. Ugh, I can still remember the smells

I remember this. I was 7 years old when it hit North Carolina and the one moment I remember is trying to sleep and looking out the window and seeing the trees outside bend down so hard from the wind to the point you can see the interstate next to my house some 10 miles away. I remember the sky being as red as blood and the lighting and thunder being so loud to the point is shook the whole house. I since moved to another town. But damage from Ivan remains there to this day.

While everybody was being ordered out, me and all the MFRD and MPD were being told to pack for 2-3 wks. and report in to station. The fire Marshals were put in pairs and assigned different stations throughout the city. Myself and the guy I was paired with came prepared for anything. We both had co2 inflatable rafts with oars, walkie talkies, canned and non perishable food, bottled water, extra uniforms, battery powered lights, rescue ropes, life vests you name it. On top of it I had arranged for someone to take care of Pete, a staffy pit who had selected me at three months to be his guardian. When I got him to where he was supposed to stay he pulled away from the lady and jumped into my FD car and refused to come out. When I grabbed his collar and tried to get him out he nipped me and immediately looked remorseful and looked down and away giving me furtive glances. I then realized he wanted to be with me regardless. I headed into station and my supervisor asked if Pete was with me. I then explained what has transpired and he laughed and said get him inside and settled. The other guys in station petted Pete and gave him treats til I had to ask them not to. As the sun went down and time grew short I had to go out on two runs and it was getting dicey outside. In between runs one guy jokingly asked if I got killed could he take care of Pete. I said yeah if you can get by my bro in law and sis, nephew, niece, lady friend et. al. It got rough on my final run before the head Chief called it a night and said no one goes out til it's determined it's safe. On my last run my car a 2003 Taurus was picked up on the passenger side and dropped about 1-2 ft. and damn near blown off a bridge at the same time a police officer in a crown Vic had the rear of his car blown around and nearly went off the bridge too. When the sun came up me and my partner ventured out and began mapping and navigating our separate ways through the downed trees, power lines, billboards, bits of buildings and what all and reporting to fire alarm and police ops. our findings. Of course my boy Pedro was with me and happy as a clam as the saying goes. We were on duty for 3 weeks except for brief breaks and dealing with John q public was something else, but Pete being there helped soothe over some situations.

Ivan was poised to come ashore at Bayou La Batre, Ala. It was packing 160mph winds. As it closed on the coast a complex of unrelated thunderstorms moved ESE off the boot of Louisiana near Buras and Venice. This complex pushed Ivan to the East and weakened Ivan to 135mph. Ivan then came ashore at Gulf Shores, Ala. and went straight up hwy. 59 to inland Alabama. Florida on the east side of Ivan got a good hard slap. A buoy off the coast S of Ala. waves in excess of 90 ft. were recorded. The largest was a little over 120 ft. Onshore waves were breaking on the beach and inland at 35-40 ft. When I say inland, Ivan pushed the Gulf inland 2 miles with 12-13 ft. of water 1 1/2 miles with waves on top of that. Gotta do dat hurricane dance like Dem duppies in da Caymans.

This storm actually came into the Pittsburgh area and just decimated it. I was really shocked it was the first time I've ever seen a hurricane hit in my area. Roads flooded cars underwater it was crazy it looked like the rain was just like one solid Mass that's how fast it was coming down

This sucker came in to north Alabama still a cat 3 storm. I went down to Gulf Shores the next day to help get communications back and we got to a place on hwy 59 about a mile from the beach and waves were washing up. That was the new coastline due to the surge. Unbelievable.
