I have a theory about Meta's awful avatars: I think it's intentional, to head off the possibility of becoming too 'internet.' It's supposed to be bland, like elevator music: Not exciting, but also incapable of upsetting anyone. Meta wants to attract people who are not immersed in online culture, and business users as well. You're not going to attract businesses to your platform if it's full of furries, waifus and lolis. So Meta goes with the mr-potato-head approach to avatar creation and greatly limits scripting. So that their metaverse may be a respectable location, where future businesses may one day hold major corporate events without fear of being swarmed by flying penises or raided by trolls wearing KKK costumes.

Probably mostly better. Hard to say lol
@icp72012 жыл бұрын
@@DaimyoD0 For now, I think. It's the same as the internet was, forums were mostly unmoderated in the beggining, while the internet was new and adoption was low, and it was fine. As soon as mass adoption began, unmoderated forums and sites became breeding grounds for hate groups and pedophiles, whose general bigotry and hostility ended up driving the majority of users away. For now, we're in the beggining of VR spaces and environments. If mass adoption comes, places like VR Chat will probably veer towards more moderation. 39:38 My biggest gripe with VRChat is that in order to have your own custom avatar, instead of everything being handled in the VRChat application, you have to use Unity. Even if the model already exists and is compatible with Unity or you use one of those avatar makers like Vroid Studio (which requires a file converter on top of having to use Unity) or Ready Player Me. In Second Life, you can just build or buy avatars and/or avatar parts and accessories in-engine. Even freaking _IMVU_ has a marketplace for avatar customization. Though actually making or importing the stuff is a lot more complex than Second Life as you have to rig everything manually whereas in Second Life, you're attaching stuff to an existing animation rig. That said, making anything with more than two legs in SL does require scripting and there's plenty of other more advanced stuff too but the basics are pretty simple, it's definitely a lot more easy to learn difficult to master than customizing avatars in any other metaverse software I've seen.
@obeseperson2 жыл бұрын

The pressure to play Farmville back then was real, I remember my friend would bug our friend group every day at school to play with him (none of the rest of us cared about Facebook) so I made an account and watered his plants just to make him happy, repeated a couple times then ditched it, I thought it was boring and had scammy vibes - I'm actually pretty proud of young teen me for seeing that lol growing up online is wild. even after i stopped playing it would still be all over my homepage and every other notification I got would be to farm/fish/mafia/whateverville invites (reminder they were pushing this stuff on KIDS). I even joined a group called "I don't care about your farm, your mafia, or your fish" or something like that lmao. only really used Facebook after that for the chat feature and complaining about school and am now the proud owner of a deactivated Facebook account, the site is boring and shady just like the games and from what I can see the metaverse is no different. We deserve better as consumers.

On your VR experiences, I had a similar view early on. For nausia, that's something most people have to get used to. They call it getting your "VR legs", similar to getting "sea legs" when getting over sea sickness. For about a week, I played in 30-45 minute intervals 2-3 times a day, and after that week I stopped getting nausia. That's pretty typical for a lot of people. On the quality of quest games, the quest is fundamentally a glorified android smart phone. Anything that won't run (or won't run well) on such a device won't run on a quest. There are a few exceptions (Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Resist, and Song in the Smoke come to mind as examples of proper feeling games on the platform), but most are on the same level as a typical phone game. Most examples of proper feeling games in VR need a PC. Also, Facebook definitely views Fortnite as a competitor. Facebook made the game Population: One as a direct competitor on the Quest.

As someone who makes a side income off of Second Life (I sell items I've created in Blender, plus my own paintings), MetaVerse was always doomed to fail IMO. This style of social media space is way more connected to people's creativity than MetaVerse will ever be able to admit. The built-in market for this sort of chat space is used to having a 90%-95% user-created world, and the freedom to express how they look and their surroundings to a high degree of customization. Even in VRChat, there's more creativity that goes into it than MetaVerse currently allows for. Unless they change that, it's DOA on all fronts.

I do believe that one thing that could have been bought up is that when it comes to tech and price, if the users were looking for something specifically made by a game company and for a gaming experience... there's always Valve, they launched their own VR headset the Valve Index, which apparently while costing an arm and a leg, is leagues more precise and comfortable than most others on the market, a bit disappointing that Billiam didn't even mention it though.

41:15 Epic Games is investing big in metaverse tech. So if they manage to get there in the near future, they already _have_ Fortnite. It just depends on if they put 2+2 together there but they'd have to be Elon Zuckerberg-Chapek levels of incompetent to not involve Fortnite with their plans. Considering they're smart enough to provide even Valve's de facto monopoly with some actual competition by strongarming devs into timed exclusivity deals (which is unethical sure but smart business, just like Fortnite's monetization)...

The problem I ended up inevitably having with Farmville: It eventually felt like I wasn't really doing anything. I wasn't REALLY accomplishing anything. The entire gameplay revolved around just... managing your time. Which meant that anything you "accomplished" wasn't actually an accomplishment. There was no way to "have bragging rights" at all. As a gamer, I like having a few options for bragging. Even if I can only brag to myself that I did something. The problem I have with Facebook: Why is this thing showing EVERYTHING except what my friends are up to? It's only good for the chat boxes now. Especially since so few people use Skype, which is vastly superior to Discord. Unless you want to talk to a bajillion people at once, when most of them are annoying and/or stupid and shouldn't be opening their mouths to begin with (so... used in Raids, essentially, and useless outside of anything beyond that). Thank you Facebook for being a glorified chat service for me. I miss MSN and AOL Messenger. I miss Yahoo Messenger. Now I've got Skype and Facebook for messenging people. Facebook decided to make itself useless.
@xAlexZifko2 жыл бұрын
buddy i hate to be the one to break it to you but you arent accomplishing anything with ANY game. theyre ALL just "managing your time" doing little insignificant activities which while fun, will absolutely not give you any long term sense of accomplishment
@name-nl3jk2 жыл бұрын
@@xAlexZifko Even going by that logic, it's clear that some are more that than others. Beating a Dark Souls boss is more rewarding than Farmvile. Especially, since there is no real goal to Farmvile except infinite growth really.
@xAlexZifko2 жыл бұрын
@@name-nl3jk youre missing the point entirely. im saying that no video game achievements will ever translate into true, real world fulfillment for the extreme majority of people and the time you spend on any of them is equal.
@XxTaiMTxX2 жыл бұрын
@@xAlexZifko Ah, a non-gamer. Here's what you fail to understand about gaming and why you're using a reductive argument. Video games are "escapism" for a vast majority of people who play. They do not exist purely for "fun". Because, if all you wanted was a sense of "fun", well, there's free prawn on the internet on demand anytime you want. That's just the pinnacle of dopamine hits outside of illegal substances. If you want something in between, you can engage in other activities. Hanging out with friends in real life, going bowling, to a sports game, shopping, read a book, watch a TV show, or whatever. There's a bajillion ways to "have fun". Especially since "fun" is little more than having an emotional attachment and reaction to an activity (anything you can't emotionally connect to, will never be fun for you, it's pretty interesting science when you begin studying it). So, with video games being "escapism" in mind, there are reasons people use video games to "escape". Primairly, it is to have the experiences you can not or will not ever have in your real life. Saving the world, getting an idealized mate, building up an empire from nothing, etcetera. Farmville taps into "addiction" and not "fun" for the typical gamer. It's systems are designed to create a schedule for the player and keep them returning, even when they aren't having fun. I am one of the few gamers that "addiction mechanics" don't work on, because I innately realize what is going on and decide that "the juice isn't worth the squeeze" anymore. It's why I never got into Fortnite, most MOBAs, or even Overwatch. Addiction Mechanics just don't do anything for me, and when your game revolves around those to "be fun", your game is "not fun" for me. To that extent, I require a game have what is basically "a set of boxes to tick". Goals, accomplishments, rewards that prove I checked the boxes. Something that proves I did more than just "waste my life" to get to where I was in the game. Stuff that shows I did the thing that (preferably) required some level of intellectual skill to accomplish, or some level of mental fortitude. Or, even, that I'm just the one person who did the thing because nobody else thought it was worth it to do it. Are real life accomplishments better? Yes and no. With someone who has dozens of real life accomplishments under his belt, I can tell you that those come with "more responsibilities" and "more people counting on you". They also take a lot longer to accomplish in real life and get recognition for than you would in a video game environment. Video games simplify this considerably. You got the title, you got the little knicknack to show you did the thing, everyone recognizes it at a glance and knows what you did, and it doesn't bring you any further hassle for having accomplished the thing. We're also talking accomplishments that might take a matter of hours or days rather than ones that would take YEARS. So, it's the escapism of "I accomplished something without all the hassle associating with having accomplished something and all the downsides to accomplishing something". Farmville doesn't have these "accomplishment" mechanics. Everything is achieved purely by "spending your life" on it. No intellectual skill involved. No reflexes involved. No personality traits required. Nothing. It is the equivalent of a participation trophy. Nobody likes to win the Participation Trophy.

I know for a fact I did not just see someone wholeheartedly claim that Skype is "VASTLY SUPERIOR" to Discord. As someone who used Skype for years, and then switch to discord; discord is leagues better. The audio quality on calls is better, calls drop less often. Skype also seems to lower your webcam's natural quality which I have not noticed with discord at all. Discord is better for making new friends as well. Idk in what possible way Skype could ever be considered better than discord.

the zuckverse isn't going to take off without furries free advertising it with their various brand-free creatures, which requires custom uploading, tails, and most importantly legs augmented reality would only be more useful than a screen if civilians needed to process as much information as fast as say.... an F1 driver or military jet pilot I want to be a shiny plastic catboy or dragon, not a realistic (sans legs) human in a shirt

I'd argue that Facebook ITSELF is basically a video game, and the object is to collect as many friends as possible. That's why it's constantly recommending friends for you, showing you other people's friends to encourage you to collect more, adding little activities and features for you and your friends to do and and anything else to just keep you playing with it, nonstop, all day, every day. And considering that most of us who used it first grew up with Pokemon, it doesn't surprise me that we took to it.

The funniest thing about the price of the meta quest pro is that its more expensive than a vive pro. Like, just buy a vive pro at that point. Its comparable in price to the fucking Valve Index (assuming you can ever find one in stock anywhere in the tiny handful of countries its actually sold in), the reigning champ of VR hardware for the past 3 years. And who would you trust with all the data that could be collected from a vr headset more: valve, or facebook? Like there is no reason for anyone to ever buy that thing. Anyway zucc is now forcing all oculus hardware to use a meta account, including hardware that we were explicitly promised would never require that back when facebook purchased oculus. Hardware that many many people (myself included) would not have purchased had that promise not been made.

33:20 Zuck's problem is that he is trying to start a game like the Oasis from Ready Player One or like Sword art Online but at least 20 years before the technology is even possible and probably in an attempt to gloss over this fact he decided on an art style that looks like a 15 year old shovelware game for the original wii, completely blind to the fact that using visuals like a crappy old kids' game is pretty much the same as taking Oppy out back and putting _it_ down himself. Oh and of course the point that the vast majority of what he proposes is total bullshit that adds pointless layers of inconvenience and paywalls to what already exists and what is already fairly convenient, he tries to create need for useless fluff no one needs nor even wants and _completely and utterly_ fails at selling it. Literally no one thinks VR is cool because shit looks like an educational game from the early 2000s but because in movies and anime it looks awesome and epic, either like reality to the point where it's not possible to tell the difference aside from small clues or because it's grand vistas and epic fantasy or sci fi worlds that would allow people to experience something completely impossible in irl. *NOT* because it allows people to use crappy, goofy avatars to do what video conferences can already do easily and effortlessly now but requiring a bulky, heavy headset that can easily cause headaches or nausea in healthy people and would be an actual health risk to anyone with a number of health issues and thereby discriminating against anyone like this. Not to mention that even healthy people will have to call it quits every couple of hours or so for an extended break so gamers won't be able to play nearly as much and crucial business meetings will have to be cut short or at least split up which means the next time people will most likely have to waste time repeating what happened last time as refresher and it will cause even more scheduling issues than any regular meeting. In short, the metaverse is total bs that adds virtually nothing but inconvenience and paywalls and fails to even dress up nicely to appeal to anyone, it's already failed before it even started. At best Zuck can hope to recupe a bit of money from some niche applications like e.g. people still playing Second Life or maybe he can manage to create some metaverse apps actually useful for some business niches but the widespread success he imagines is basically the same as Trump expecting Jared to sort out the Arab-Israeli conflict just because he would like it to happen.

Can't get over how good this video is. I've observed that the people who were "pioneering' (barf) predatory Facebook games went on to pioneer hyper-predatory mobile games and then were first in line for the uber-predatory crypto / blockchain "games" -- the common thread? Get-rich-quick start up weirdos trying to make as much money as humanly possible BEFORE regulation arrives. Regulation hit Facebook so they moved their gross games to iOS & Android. Regulation arrived in those spaces so they were first to cheerlead for web3 blockchain "gaming" -- these guys just want to beat the regulators.

Only reason I originally got Facebook was to help my brother who played a game I think was called Sushi Wars. Then I ended up switching from MySpace entirely to chat with family. As far as games; I used PlayStation Home. That had perfect potential. Ended up getting shutdown because nobody wanted to spend a monthly subscription. The amount of free content you could earn just by entering hubs was amazing. And I love how it had certain events going on depending on the holiday. Like on Easter there was an Easter egg hunt. Plus the way you could watch tv with friends I thought was unique. Those not aware; you could invite a friend over to your home and watch a streaming service called Crackle and they could be anywhere in the world physically and could sit on a couch or chair in your digital home as a 3d avatar and watch the same program while talking to you. A friend of mine claimed he got a different streaming service besides Crackle; but not sure how true that is. Considering when he told me; Home was already shutdown.
