My dad used to tell a "funny story" about how I was smart and deceptive as a baby: I cried when I didn't need anything to trick my parents into coming into the room to interact with me. This apparently demonstrated the sin nature I was born with. So he spanked me for it and eventually I learned to only cry when necessary. I am now no-contact with him.

Why do parents think babies and little kids can manipulate them? Maybe an older kid, that's like, 10 years old could. But manipulation is a learned behavior. If someone's kid is being manipulative, they learned that from watching someone else do it, most likely their own parents

@MoodyMickey yeah there's a book called "How to raise up a child." And it claims that when babies cry and don't need food or diaper changes. It is because they're evil and the devil is using them to manipulate the parents and test them. So the solution put forth in the book? Beat your infants, it even includes a passage reminding them to only hit areas covered by clothes and diapers so secular idiots won't call CPS on you. You know that woman The Transformed wife? She and her husband wrote that book.

What in the actual duck? Did he really believe a BABY had the cognitive ability to try and manipulate him? Babies need attention, if you can't deal with that then don't be a parent. Sorry you had to deal with that, your dad sounds like a real d-bag.

I once came across a "how to raise a gifted child" family group on Facebook. All posts were like "gifted children have issues socializing" and "gifted children have sensory issues" (basically describing signs of autism). My mother is in that group. I am a gifted child.

Gifted children do often have issues socializing, autism or not, because their interests tend to differ from their peers. That doesn't change the fact that a lot of gifted children are "twice exceptional" (have developmental disorders like autism and adhd, learning disabilities, etc), and it's easy to overlook those things.

@@lilia3944 That’s kind of why I don’t like the concept of gifted children, and the concept of putting them on a pedestal, even though there’s other stuff that is going on (ADHD and Autism, both of which I have), and even though I haven’t been through this, I’ve heard horror stories about such. You can admire your child having a gift and help them build and realize that, but maybe also get them some suitable help if something’s amiss, like social skills, struggling in school and stuff. At least that’s what I think, anyway.

The child will most likely develop a personality disorder from that type of abuse, too 😢 through no fault of their own. My parents hit us with hands, belt & switch(which they made us pick ourselves from the tree, it had to be green to be "effective" & not break). I've been wondering lately how early they started hitting us 😢 At least from toddler age, but I wouldn't put it past them to have done it as an infant. 😞 My heart goes out to these children. They're innocent, no one deserves abuse!

Here's a handy dandy flowchart! 1) Is your kid old enough to use reason? If yes, go to 2, else go to 4 2) Then use reason. Go to 3 3) Stop beating your kids, idiot! 4) Then they won't understand why they are getting beaten. Go to 3. This one made the rounds 8 years ago. It really is that simple.

Met someone like that. My dad's grandma. She was so polite and sweet and all cutesy, nice old lady. Then she pulled out a journal with all the records of her spanking my dad. She was proud and nostalgic over it. It started at 6 months. Same thing. In neat cursive "wouldn't stop crying." As a reason. For spanking a baby. It kind of sits with you permanently but your mind never wraps around it. People like that exist. And breathe. And have no idea what they do is wrong.

Regarding the "License for having children" thing, I think an ethically acceptable option would be mandatory parenting and first aid classes(maybe some basic biology too) for ALL expecting parents. Both parents should be forced to learn how to properly raise a child and take care of their basic needs. If the parent is deemed mentally unfit to care for a child then the child could be taken.

The only fear I have with that is the historical weaponization of calling someone "mentally unfit". There've been a lot of times in the past where queer and neurodivergent individuals who are **perfectly** capable of something are banned from that thing under the pretenses of being "mentally unfit" when in reality it was just homophobia or ableism. An example being the difficulties many queer couples worldwide have when trying to adopt (as far as I'm aware, at least). Classes though, that are at least strongly encouraged somehow, I absolutely think would be beneficial.

What about people who are theoretically capable but just don't care enough? Or parents who get the license but then don't apply it? I'm not sure how to fill all the holes without having mandatory sterilization for unfit people but that's unethical
@ttintagel
@ttintagel 9 ай бұрын
Yeah, the parenting license thing can only lead to eugenics. But you could have something like a tax penalty for parents who refuse to take a science-based parenting class. It wouldn't completely wipe out bad parenting, but it would absolutely help a lot of families. And the penalties collected from other parents would help fund things like counseling and foster care for the kids who aren't helped, plus the actual classes.

In my state, we have the lowest income and financial guidelines in the US and it doesn't cover nearly as much as other states do. I've worked with many people with disabilities and older adults that are able to get Medicaid and many who aren't eligible or couldn't get all the services they needed. Although, there is good news, children's Medicaid here does cover a lot more than other Medicaid programs and the income guidelines are much higher than all the others. But it still doesn't cover as much as other states do. I wish things were the same everywhere so people can get these services like you did.

So basically if your child dies from lack of medical care cuz you believed in leaving it in 'God's hands' that's completely acceptable and not punishable. There families that have multiple kids 1 or more die from a simple sickness that a Dr visit or otc meds could solve. They do nothing but pray. The child(ren) die the remaining children aren't in any 'danger of removal. Those ppl will even have more children and in some cases lose more children etc and they tick the box for religious exemption and that's that. It's a shame..

When I was pregnant I had one friend who was so adamant that I should have a home birth. That hospitals destroy the 'positive energy' of becoming a new mother. I said no. So many things could go wrong in a home birth and at the time I had read some horror stories about unqualified nurses performing home birth deliveries, and even nurses who refused to call an ambulance when something went wrong. I lost that friend over the home birth argument Flash forward a few months and I had to be induced at ten months (there's a reason it went so long past due that was for the baby's health. He had a heart condition and the doctors wanted him to be as big as possible in case he needed immediate surgery upon birth). As it happened a lot went wrong. My contractions stopped completely after 1 hour. I was fully dilated but the baby was in distress. We likely both would have died if it was a home birth because I bled and bled and the contractions needed to be forced by injections of a drug, and even then the doctors had to use a pump to pull my baby out. I hope wherever she is, home birth girl is stubbing her toe and stepping on legos.

In my neonatal internship (I'm a final year medical student) I was tought that the first thing to do when a mom and a baby, or a delivering mom arrives at the hospital after a home birth gone wrong is to call the cops. They need to be notified, bc the doctor who first attends the child is considered responsible, and the kid and the mom may arrive with complications from home that you need to "wash your hands" before hand by notifying it was a home birth first. In other words, home births are so dangerous that we need to be taught how to not get in trouble for it, and also this is the type of people who sue doctors that weren't able to save their child after the stupid idea they had put them in danger

An incentive would be good, but also just make the pregnancy/childbirthing/parenting classes free. Right now, that sort of thing is very expensive. Also, part of the rise of interest in home births and homeopathic medicine in the past few decades is the increase of working people and families without health insurance. If you want to encourage people to stop thinking that doctors are just trying to scam them for their money, make it so that people with linited funds can get heathcare without having to spend hundreds in a copay in order to get a checkup. If you add together free healthcare, free parenting classes, & free education, it would be amazing how quickly people would stop doing stupid and harmful shite to themselves and their children.

I think the idea is that you have a chance with adoption to MAKE future parents do the learning. So you seize on that chance to try to make a difference. The same way when you buy a pet from a reputable breeder they put a clause in specifying you WILL neuter. It's an attempted intervention intended to reduce future harm. As such, the principle seems okay. As for whether it helps or is done in an equitable way that doesn't further contribute to the massive issues surrounding adoption, I can't say. I see the logic. I just don't know if it actually helps. I tend not to trust people's ability to be normal around the issue of parenting, as the first people to be actually gatekept from becoming parents aren't people who will actually BE bad parents, but rather people deemed bad by the kinds of folks who run adoption agencies.

I once joined a Facebook support group for Moms with Autistic children thinking I could connect with and support other moms and get reasonable advice on how to be better for my son's sake. Maybe the admins know something I don't, you know? But what I found was heartbreaking. The first five posts were moms ranting about things their children were doing (stimming their minds, taking clothes off, nonverbal littles screaming, etc.) and about how tired and angry they were about their kids being DISABLED. Then there was one post that opened a can of worms. A mom had a nine year old boy with severe autism, and she wanted so bad to give up. She was hopeless and said she regrets having him. The worst part, however, was the comment section. Instead of giving positive advice on what to do, or methods to calm and redirect the kid, the owner of the group and her admins were not only suggesting, but ENCOURAGING the mom to give the boy up. And I went to all the other mom rants and saw them do the same thing in every comment section, basically insinuating that none of these moms are good enough and should give up their kids to the states. They even posted age limits for Safe Haven Baby Boxes so moms had the option to be anonymous. And directions on how to call child services. I made a single post introducing myself and even I got a comment telling me to message them if I ever gave up. Then got links to the Autism Speaks website. I left the group(echo chamber) 45 minutes later, and I quit FB altogether.

If I knew of the resources I know now, I would've reached out and helped but I was so shocked by the whole thread I couldn't stay. She just casually waddles back to the car, yells for her husband to be sure to get the food to go “if he wants to keep living” and they drive to the hospital, sis enjoying half of said pizza on the way. Nephew is out in 45mins, sis convinces the docs to release them after two hours, she cant really sleep or eat if admitted. Docs want to keep them in for one night, but she is stubborn mommy of four now and eventually gets her way. Sis eats the other half on their drive back home, like none of this was anything major, like its everyday thing to go out for pizza and return with new family member.. I have asked what sorta pizza it was, no idea, she just remembers it was exceptionally delicious. She tells this story way better than me, but I thought it fits here perfectly, its one of my favorites :)

For whoever needs to hear this: Corporal punishment absolutely does harm children. This has been a consensus in the professional community for a while now. There are studies upon studies about this. The right of every child to grow up free of violence is in the UN human rights charta since like the eighties, if I'm not mistaken, and with good reason. Most developed countries have forbidden corporal punishments at least in schools. Apart from well researched and documented psychological damage (often long-lasting) - the younger the child, the more severe physical harm can be done by even just "mild" corporal punishments. For example, there is a thing called "shaken baby syndrom". An infant's brain can literally take permanent damage up to death if the kid is being shaken violently. Children's bodies and minds are extremely fragile and sensitive. What seems "mild" to us can have a huge effect. Also: It baffles me that this has to be said, but a baby, especially an INFANT, will not "understand" that it is being "punished" or why. It doesn't have the mental framework yet for cause and effect, let alone right and wrong. It doesn't perceive time same as we, it can't interpret its surroundings or people's actions. It doesn't have a sense of self yet. It's not a dog you have to train as soon as it pops out of the womb. It is completely and utterly helpless and dependent on the caregiver. All it knows are wants / needs, and pains. Making noise is its only way to communicate, and it is done non-consciously. The infant is not evil, it is not out to get you, it is not punishing you. It's being a baby. When you think your baby is "being nasty on purpose", you are projecting your own shit on someone that wouldn't recognise themselves in the mirror. All what beatings at that early age will do is cause serious damage to the child's development and psyche, and very likely, body.

agree. Any kind of abuse and abusive punishment is permanently damaging to a child. I only received physical punishment up to the age of 7 I think. after that it was all verbal abuse the physical punishment left me with a horrible mix of touch repulse and deprivation. I'm slowly getting used to the friendly and literally harmless touches from people at work. the verbal abuse left me with the fear that nothing I have concerns about are actually real issues (specifically dealing with this about social problems at work as an adult) When I get too stressed to continue dealing with a situation or I become miserable enough in a situation I will finally find someone to talk to and they'll wonder why I didn't seek help sooner. According to Statista, over 91 percent believe that alternative medicines are effective for treating minor ailments while only 31 percent believe that alternative medicines are less effective than conventional healthcare. The founder of homeopathy, Samuel Hahnemann spent the last eight years of his life in Paris and Laboratoires Boiron, a huge international homeopathy group, is based in France and has a lot of influence over there. Despite the French government taking more initiative to regulate alternative medicine the pseudoscientific mindset is still prevalent among a big part of the general population in France. Some of the hesitancy around vaccines over there have been caused by clinical trial incidents like with the hepatitis b vaccine trial and the blood contamination scare during the 90's as well as a scandal with the diabetes drug Mediator marketed for weight loss which was linked to the deaths of 2,000 people. A parenting licence is maybe not the way to go, but we definitely need to speak more openly about choosing to have kids or not. As a child-free person, I often get the impression that people never really question if they want to have kids at all. Some people don't even seem to be aware that it is a CHOICE. They just have kids because it is expected of them (especially women), stupid gender roles or they are afraid they will end up lonely (which can still happen, even if you have kids). There is absolutely nothing wrong with having kids but your value as a person doesn't depend on it and we need to stop making people (especially women) feel like it does. We need to stop pushing the ideal of having children/raising a family as the only valid way to live onto others from an early age. Maybe instead of telling teenagers "WHEN you have kids one day", we should tell them "IF you decide to have kids one day, but it's perfectly fine if you don't" more often. I will say this again: your value as a person does not depend on whether you have kids or not. There are many ways to lead a happy life full of love ❤

This ❤ I see where the idea for a parental license comes from but I only see it leading (possibly into eugenics) and removing personal rights, which is already a huge issue. Free parenting classes however, and a lot more support for expecting parents and throughout their child's life would help so much. Even if parents aren't wanting, they still need community and it's often very difficult to find.

Exactly. The popularity of antivax & alt medicine is directly linked to our for-profit, corrupt system. I remember desperately googling home remedies for UTIs when I was in the US. I'm now in a 3rd world country & have better health, mental & dental than I ever did in the US! When I first got to South India & saw how CHEAP meds are here, I was angry & disgusted, bc I realized how badly Americans are ripped off. Also I actually admin a niche mom group on FB. It's so hard to try to explain to them that you can 100% hate big pharma & its greed/corruption, but also trust science at the same time. I'm an anticapitalist so I recognize exactly *why* the system is corrupt. Boggles my mind that ppl can explain the corruption directly due to capitalism yet defend it as the "best system" at the same time!

I'm in Korea and have access to affordable health care. Unfortunately, some of the older docs have wildly outdated info and some other docs bribe their way through the system so consulting some local foreign mom fb groups is really helpful. You can get an idea of what the doc might ask, what the dx might be and research it. If you have a good doc and it is their day off, you gotta be prepared for some stupid BS. Anecdote: my 6mo had a textbook fungal diaper rash. Went to a good hospital, saw the freshly graduated doc. He told us to do absolutely nothing and if it gets worse, the entire family needs to take antibiotics because if there is no bacteria, there is no infection. Big brain stuff right there. I have IBS, I don't mess with my gut biome if not necessary. Plus, our poor kid was soooo uncomfortable and my medical knowledge picked up over the years was screaming BS. It was too late for any non ER visits so I looked up the OTC meds for a fungal rash commonly prescribed in the UK (NHIS has a good website) and sent my husband to the pharmacy with a list. He came back with one and 30min later, baby's rash was 50% better already. We complained the next time we were at the hospital and that doc slowly had his hours cut until he disappeared from the pediatric unit. Now, when similar questions get raised in our local mom FB groups, I can suggest the OTC meds if it is on the weekend with a suggestion to see the doc asap but try this cream in the meantime. ER visits here are $100 and usually useless unless you are profusely bleeding. Srsly, one ER visit when my 2yo wasn't walking and kept crying when trying to put pressure on her leg resulted in "take ibuprofen and check up with a pediatrician if she still can't walk on Monday" That was my initial treatment plan I only know basic first aid ffs

Fun Fact: People in the Medieval Period actually bathed fairly regularly. Given that the majority of the population would be peasants, and the most common job was working in the fields, it was necessary for most people to wash themselves after coming home. There were communal baths, like in ancient Rome, or in Asian countries today. Special scented soaps were a common gift. Some historians have even described the Medieval Period as a bathing culture. Which means that mother who only washed her infant once a month has absolutely no excuse.

My parents had a similar experience to the woman who had the newborn in NICU and later became an RN because of it. They were involved in a church that was whatever the early 80s Christian version of anti-vaxx was. When I was born I almost died. I suspect my mom was convinced by the church to not get medicine during pregnancy that would have made this not happen. They advised my parents to take me out of NICU so they could pray over me at the church. I couldn't breathe on my own. I would have been dead before I even got to the church. My parents were already getting ready to jump ship on this group when I was finally discharged after a few months. The pastor and his wife came with their daughter to visit. The daughter was clearly in the early stages of whooping cough. Turns out my dad is a bit of a momma bear so he kicked them out of the apartment while my mom rushed me away from the sick kid. That was it. They were done. Science education was a regular thing in our house because of that.

Losing your temper with kids is something that may not seem like it has that many ramifications, but it does. I love my dad so so so much, but there was one time where he was absolutely pissed at me for being probably a total difficult little shit (I was like 9 or 10, and exhausted after a swim meet, so I was absolutely being a little terror and I probably should’ve “known better”), and he grabbed me very hard by the arm and was dragging me out, and I made a scene, and he responded by lifting me off my feet by my throat. It didn’t do any physical damage and I’m pretty sure I could still breathe, but I was absolutely terrified in that moment, and I have had an underlying fear of him ever since. Nothing even remotely like that happened ever again, but that’s all it takes. One moment where your child feels unsafe with you and they may never feel safe with you ever again.

The second we make it mandatory to get a license to have a kid it becomes a dystopia. Are we going to force a mother to abort her child if she’s too incompetent to pass the test? Are we going to discriminate against liberal or conservative parents? Are we going to have racial inequalities on these tests? If different races get different average SAT scores I don’t see how you could get equally distributed parent licenses. That means it could be considered a genocide of some racial demographics if it’s an unequal distribution . What if someone posts something the government dislikes? Is that a parenting license ban? What if someone gets their parenting license revoked mid parenting (aka a child that is born and between 2-18 years old)? Does that mean the child gets repossessed by the government ? There are almost unlimited ways this can turn into genocide and very few ways it can go right imo.

And she's only excited about her grandchild? No rage at wanting to know who the father might be? There are a lot of examples of mothers raging when they shouldn't, but this is the inverse. I'd think maybe she's just not expressing her concerns on social media if not for the fact that she uses social media to ask for major medical advice for her daughter, so I really doubt she's developed any kind of filter like that.

I have an acquaintance that insists that her shoving veggies and fruits inside her socks and they darken overnight isn't because of oxidation, but because "all body toxins got dragged out". I really really thought she was smarter than this. When confronted with logic and facts, she said like "Hmph. Well, I'll go do my own research."

36:30 I feel like a good comparison to give to this lady is to ask if she thought getting a leg amputated before pregnancy meant her kid would be born with only one leg. Because the nose assumedly got reduced in some way (even if also restructured) and not added to like breast implants. If she still said yes I would leave her to her assumptions until the baby was born so she could see for herself.

12:50 I once, back when I was in grad school, had to say to a woman, "You have 11, 12 years to teach a kid everything you want them to know, _including responsibility,_ because after age 11/12, the human brain stops blindly accepting and starts thinking for itself. What, are kids going to suddenly absorb resposible behavior out of the air by osmosis the day they turn 18?" The response this woman gave me [it was part of a much longer conversation, BTW], was a shocked, "Oh!"   Like seriously! The idea that you had to _teach_ your kid to be responsible … nevermind that you're under a deadline to do so … _had never crossed this woman's mind_ until that conversation! The snooping OP at 12:50 is a whole level worse: she can't comprehend that 17 year old *_IS NOT EQUAL TO_* 17 _month_ old! There's a reason why teenagers used to be called, _young _*_adults._*

The nanny job math comes out to $2.28/hour. What the heck is wrong with someone that they think they can do that to an employee? I mean, this is a total setup for the parent to be taking advantage of someone who is disadvantaged or vulnerable in some way. Because only someone really desperate would even consider that position, even if accomodations were offered.
@Madamoizillion

Accomodations offered? It's basically slavery. I faintly remember a story from a few years ago about a wealthy American(?) family that had a live-in nanny that was from a different country (Philippines? South America??) And they gradually isolated her and reduced her wages to make her more and more dependent upon them until they were paying her nothing and keeping her basically in indentured servitude.

21:12 To add to that, ironically when people say that "it's alright to abuse your kids since it doesn't cause any real physical harm", they are dead wrong. It does. Thoughts, memories, new knowledge and pretty much everything you do or experience plays a role in how your brain is wired, due to neuroplasticity (neurons creating new connections, shifting, or completelly new neurons being created). So those parents aren't just causing emotional/mental harm, but are literally also altering the strcuture of their child's brain for the worse. That's why childhood trauma is a main cause of mental illness and personality disorders. Not just because it hurts the victim's heart, but because the abuse has literally changed the structure of their brain, making just living a normal life very challenging and may require medication and intensive therapy to be fixed and to rewire the brain (fun fact, some popular antidepressants have been shown to increase neuroplasticity, making therapy more effective, as the new skills are learned faster). A good way to describe the extend of the damage in a scale that would be visible to the naked eye would be as if parents broke their child's bones and left them to heal in the wrong position; but they cannot see neurons, so the damage doesn't count as physical in their eyes.

Home remedies to cure serious stuff should not just be child abuse, but also mandatory reporting to the police.... Private groups doing stuff like this should get banned, because it is child abuse when there are serious problems attached...

My little sister was 14 when she gave birth 🥺 I was so scared!! She was always so tiny, it was terrifying. Yes, our parents were extremely dysfunctional. I'm No Contact with them now. Sis & I are in our 30s now. If we had competent parents then they'd have gotten her an abortion. But my mom is a southern, mentally ill, Christian woman. She ended up having to raise sis's son, for obvs reasons. My sister's life would've been SO much different, had she not had a baby that young. She ended up getting on droogs(meth) for years. She's finally sober now, as am I. But her life was forever altered bc we have incompetent parents. I almost didn't make it myself. Had to leave the country entirely to survive. I'm now a first time mom, had my son at 34. Needless to say my parents won't know or meet him, bc it's my job to protect him! 🥺❤

the fact that the parent didn't mention anything about whether her daughter wanted to keep it or not is what I find the worst about the post. She wants to be a grandma and will literally sacrifice her own daughter's mental and physical health for it. for all we know she could have been assaulted and the daughter didn't feel comfortable trying the truth even if the daughter did want the child, she's likely not even emotionally mature herself and likely couldn't handle raising a kid.

I grew up in a school district that hired teachers without teaching degrees. The rule was that they could do one year contracts and if they renewed for three consecutive years they would automatically receive a teaching license. That meant our education system was extra fucked up because some of the teachers didn’t even know how to fill out the grade book, had to ask students to help them teach, behaved weirdly with students, some were actually insane, almost all of them were wildly unqualified to be in the vicinity of children. Some did drugs with students, others prior to my time in school ran from police after doing bad stuff to kids. I graduated 3rd in my class with honors and college credits from advanced placement classes and I can’t function in university because my high school education was so incredibly bad.

33:34 Do not smoke around your kids. I don’t know how serious it could be, but I personally was diagnosed with Asthma at around 7 years old because of my family smoking so much around me. I had to use a weird breathing machine every day. Luckily it wasn’t too serious for me and I basically recovered. But I imagine it could be much worse. My younger sister was also diagnosed with asthma around the same time for the same reasons. Just don’t smoke around children. Please.

When I was little (1-4 years old) My dad would take my pants off and spank me to the point of me sobbing. I can't even remember why. He was in the navy so he was rarely home but I was terrified when he was. After my sister was born he stopped but he still makes stupid and painful jokes about hurting me and I don't know how to tell him that's not okay. He is really condescending and loves making me feel worthless and my mom just ignores it and whenever I try to talk to her about it she brushes it off and reacts like I'm just complaining because I'm a stupid teenager (15 years). It has really affected my self worth and has caused me to flinch whenever anyone touches me and I can't be intimate with my family without feeling incredibly uncomfortable. Sorry I was rambling lol.

The lady saying that spanking her 4 month old isn't doing real harm hurts me. My uncles dad started small, he ended with throwing him out a 2nd story window before he was even 1 year old and causing life changing brain and spinal damage (cerebral palsey). My uncle died at 40 from a collapsed lung,he had so many medical issues because of the abuse that started so small. He had 5 step siblings that were min 4 years older than him and was his dad's first child, apparently he would do everything to shut the baby up until he ended up trying to kill him. Luckily he survived and the neighbours witnessed it, that's how he ended up with us for the rest of his life

14:47 This sounds a lot like my mom, I constantly am keeping secrets from her because she has this tendency to tell others MY secrets, bare in mind I AM an adult now and learned these habit under 12. She still treats me like a child not an adult who is ready to leave the house and intent to move to a place that’s nearly 8+ hours away in my boyfriends home state. I honestly have no idea what she’s going to do without me there as she relays on me to do quite a lot (put food in the oven, feed the cats, sew/mend her clothes etc etc) The one thing that these types of parents have and eventually will be taken away is their extreme codependency on their kids.
