About 5 years ago now, I went to see a Nightwish show in Seattle, WA. I arrived in line outside the venue, just like everyone else. Eventually, a staff member from the event was scoping the line, asking if anyone would like to purchase a VIP ticket, as they had extras available. I asked how much they were, and she said, "We're selling them for $100." I didn't have a lot of money, but I knew I'd regret it if I didn't. So I jumped on the chance immediately. I had not expected to have that kind of opportunity that day. I had only expected to see them play, as I had a couple times before. I never expected to meet my favorite band! So I waved goodbye to the people around me, while lightheartedly declaring myself "upgraded". When I finished paying my way, I was inside the venue. I jumped in VIP line to meet the band, who where situated behind a large table in front of the stage. The table was a considerable distance away from where the line was formed. One by one, people were escorted to the table to sign autographs, and greet the band members. The whole thing was done at an incredibly awkward, monotonous pace. The encounter was very brief for each fan. Each fan worked their way from left to right at the table, working their way through each band member. Then, the fan would pose behind the band for a photo. Then, the fan was escorted away, much in the same way they were brought to the table. Eventually, it was my turn. I nervously walked up to the table and greeted every member of Nightwish from left to right: Marco, then Kai, Troy, Floor, Emppu, and finally, Tuomas. Of course, I thoroughly thanked every one of them for the music, and every emotion I've experienced because of them, for so many years. I got everyone's autograph on my ticket stub, and also on a provided program given to VIP members. Then I positioned myself behind both Floor Jansen and Troy Donockley. I couldn't believe I was right next to my heroes! I leaned in for the photo, like every other fan had done before me. I couldn't believe it! This was beyond amazing! But something was missing. All the while, the whole experience seemed far too robotic...too mundane for everyone sitting at that table, including myself. It didn't seem real enough. I needed to do something. So I did. The escort man approached me, as he did everyone else after their photo was taken. But I was not done yet. I may never be able to do this again, I thought, and it meant too damn much to me. After all, I never thought I would ever get this chance! So, I approached Tuomas once more. He turned around from the table, with an expression of surprise on his face. I then said, "Tuomas, I need to thank you again. Can I give you a hug?" He didn't even say a word. He stood straight up out of his chair, extended his hand, and embraced me as though I were not a stranger. My right palm in his, he heartily slapped his left hand on my back as though he'd known me for years. Needless to say, there are not many times in my life that can even begin to rival this moment.

I have a request: I would Love to see Tuomas create a video that shows him building and playing a song. You can glimpse him working on various computers, synths, sequencers etc. on behind-the-scenes videos. There are a few seconds of him playing during concerts, but little that I could show someone interested in composing and playing. It would be great to see what equipment he uses and how all this is all done.
@kataratify2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is a year old but you can see a little bit of him working on songs from the Maan Mainiot documentary. He's stated in past interviews that he doesn't actually use any computers at all minus the ones that are in the Korg keyboards themselves. Hes stated that he's using the Korg Karma or Oasis and the good old trusty N364 (which i think is the one he's using in the documentary). So for a while the demos were on floppy disks... He's mentioned that the basic drum tracks he records one drum hit on the keyboard at a time and then quantizes them using the tools inside the keyboard.
