Man, inane doesn't begin to touch what you've crapped out, here! I'm going to just leave this, now. @@robertdefex3439 I have to strongly disagree with your statement. Even his technic is very personal (he's not playing in the flamenco or classical style as I could read it, inspired from it but it's something else and it's not just a trick, it gives him this phrasing so peculiar, extremely clear, that he's got). He already has his own style (even if he's also capable to interpret others' music with feeling) and I'm really looking forward what he's going to create in the next years. But as impressive his technical skills are, it's everything but shredding, it's always dedicated to the music and phrasing, I followed him for a couple of year now and I will probably be amazed for decades by his feeling and phrasing,

As an aficionado of good guitar playing and student of music theory and composition at university, I am astonished by this amazing young and bright talent. I was totally floored back in 1971 when I discovered British guitar phenom John McLaughlin (after being initially introduced to Page, Beck, Clapton and Hendrix), but after hearing this highlight reel of Matteo I’m back on the floor again and struggling to get back up to catch my breath! This young artist has nowhere to go but up, and there are few out there now who come close to his mastery over theory, fretboard knowledge, various styles, phrasing, acute sense of the music around him (pocket sense?) and most important, musicality. I hesitate to compare MM to anyone alive or passed, but I’m looking for some gravity and center here in trying understanding his unique approach to the instrument and idea execution: I start with Larry Carlton, probably one of the greatest masters of clean, melodic phrasing ever, and add Guthrie Govan for shear effortlessness, virtuosity and imagination. Surely with the Flamenco training MM has had he has now expanded the instrument to a full two-handed standard that few will be able to emulate. My question: has MM begun to explore world music and other theories of music as McLaughlin has? I hope he will as I see music as a universal language for him to access and utilize with theories from this wider universe. It would almost be too much to ask for!

Mateo's right hand is flamenco-style, and on electric, he also mutes unwanted strings or string noise by muting them with his other fingers while playing with the picking fingers!! His note choices and horn-like intervals while improvising is something else, also!! The tone from his picking hand resembles the attack of a pick, while retaining the warmth of fingerstyle. He’s a game changer. His technique is unique, just like EVH in 1978 or Jeff Beck before him. Hendrix anyone? If he were able to pair up with his own Rod Stewart, David Lee Roth, or Robert Plant, he’d be legendary like those before him. If he decided to be an instrumental player exclusively, is guitar nerds would love that as well. I hope this kid is happy in whatever path he takes. It’s a treat to watch him play.

Is anyone going to ask if he can compose? I hope so because that is what seals the deal. What does HIS music sound like. Sure, commoners can see he is fast and smooth, and guitar players get blown away by the talent, but does this just translate into another session player career? Matteo, as a big Holdsworth fan, I love hearing your playing - how are your compositions going? Much success Matteo!

He's probably not as strong (yet) as either of those players, nor at the level of Al Dimeola in his prime, nor close to Paco who was also of course fingerstyle. But he is fantastic, and beyond the technical ability aspect, one of the most musical players out there now. I'd put him at almost the level of Guthrie (Govan). He is something special no doubt.

Imposible compare this kid with galactus holdsworth. Holdsworth was more complex and unpredictable from horn vocabulary. Guitar for him was just a tool. Besides, allan didnt need play with two hands for his solos. Just with one huge hand! Come on!

The guitar community needed new talent to *really* take the instrument into this millennium - not just Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen etc etc. All these famous names are without a doubt still very valid, impressive and musically relevant, but still it is based on what they developed last century. I'm stunned by the skills of young people like Mateo, but even more so by their dedication to their instrument!! Who said young people can't invent anything anymore?? 😀 The new generation will come up with sounds and techniques us old guys (I'm 57) never could even dream of. And that's as it should be 😎👍🙏

Just. Freaking. Wow. When you're impressing guys like Steve Vai, you're really doing something special. And I'll echo other posters: It's not just the chops, though the kid has all-universe-level chops for sure. But listen to his FEEL. Listen to how fluently he switches styles. Listen to his tone. This is a musician, and I can give no higher compliment than that.

99? I would say 100% of guitar players who aren't him can't do what he does. Sure, I would never go so far as to say so-and-so is better than this other guy since it's all just about personal preference, but I think he stands clearly on his own just in terms of incredible technical ability and speed combined with amazing feel, and being able to play across seemingly infinite genres and I don't think it's possible to confuse him with another person. His finger picking while sweeping totally blows my mind though. Edit: Sorry, guess I didn't really clarify this point, when I say nobody else can do what he does, I mean that everyone has their own unique way they play. In that regard, nobody else does what he does.

3:48 Is that Tony William's FRED ? ....Allan Holdsworth did a lovely live rendition of that. ....I'm sure Allan would have been singing Matteo's praises. On some of the slower runs he has a kind of melodic sensibility of someone like Eric Johnson (to my ears anyway) .....& he can country fingerpick as nifty as Greg Koch too. & very expressive with the vibrato bar and muting strings strategically ...EXCELLENT. INSPIRING.
