The reason the CX-5 hasn’t changed much since 2017 is because it’s really just THAT good. I have a 2018 GT soul red with 64k miles on it and it’s been one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Nothing but routine maintenance, great drive mechanics, no squeaks or rattles, sure it’s the smallest of the segment but if space isn’t a major priority it’s a great choice still to this day.
@eddiem488Күн бұрын
Completely agree. Our family has a 2017 GT, and it’s obviously not very comparable, but it definitely feels like enough space after upgrading from a Honda Civic. Even though it’s on the smaller side for the segment, they didn’t sacrifice passenger space and comfort, especially when something like the RAV4 actually has less space in the second row. The only major upgrade we made was adding Apple CarPlay/Android Auto because it wasn’t standard yet, and it was enough to make it feel more modern. In general, it doesn’t feel like an 8 year old vehicle and people never believe it’s more that 2-3 years old. You’re absolutely right, even though it hasn’t changed, it doesn’t feel old or dated. The Forester was actually our second choice, but other than having a bit more space, it always fell short compared to the CX-5. Similar to the RAV4, the Forester always felt very utilitarian and rugged, which did add to the practicality and toughness of the vehicle, but it also made it feel somewhat cheaper and truck-like. On the other hand, the CX-5 is not futuristic or super modern, but it balances everything really well. It’s still very reliable and practical, but it also doesn’t sacrifice Mazda’s sporty elegance and sophistication.

18:09 The difference in the increase in HP/TQ and no CVT in the Mazda should be worth 4 pts (2 pts for each difference). These are the most important components to consider, engine and transmission.
@sneakyfoz36923 күн бұрын
You’re living in the past, the CVT is no longer rubbish like they used to be. Having driven both, the Mazda kills it on paper, in real life driving the gap is not as great. Only on a racetrack would see the Mazda pull ahead, which in this segment is a pointless exercise.

I’ve owned a 2019 CX5 Signature for nearly 6 years, and it is hands down the best car I’ve ever owned. Turbo engine, ride, and interior are absolutely unbeatable for the non-luxury segment. Like the Forester, but they have a kiddie engine by comparison.

Pretty strange for a so called ‘Engineer’ to make blanket statements on CVT transmissions like they are all the same. I’ve owned a car with a CVT transmissions in 2008, the worse of CVTs it was rubbish to drive but lasted 15 years, the CVT on 2024 Forester is worlds apart, really drives no different to a regular automatic transmission if not actually better for everyday commuting. Current generation CVTs will last the life of a vehicle.

At the end of the day, they both are wonderful in certain situations. AWD system, Subi. Sport performance, Mazda. Space and roomy comfort, Subi. We could do this all day. Most of us need to chose one, so whatever compromise suits you is all good. Personally, it’s a mode of transport,both are fantastic and will last many years if maintained. Good luck with that perfect world.

I use to listen to a very respected radio host in the LA area called The Motor Man a couple years ago. He noir only had this radio show was years, but owned a mechanics shop. While he said now days most cars are very well built, Subaru (and Mercedes) were on another level. I guess if you want sport and driving dynamics, yes the Mazda is better. But for a family, all-wheel drive, cargo room, utility, re-sale and reliability the Forester is the choice by far.
@eddiem4882 күн бұрын
When our family was looking for a new vehicle we wanted something reliable, but also something a little less common than a RAV4 or CR-V. It came down to the Forester and CX-5, and both had strong selling points. The Forester has more space and storage, and a pretty bulletproof AWD system for our Canadian winters; the CX-5 has more standard safety features, incredible handling, and much more refined interior and exterior styling. In the end, we found that coming from a Honda Civic, we were already getting more space, and the CX-5 is nearly as comfortable in the second row as it is up front, which is rare for a crossover. Even though we didn’t want something really futuristic, the Forester, while functional, still seems to have a more dated and generic interior, similar to the RAV4. The CX-5 is not perfect, but it has a much better balance of sporty elegance and sophistication, without sacrificing reliability and practicality. Since 2017, Mazda has offered a HUD in the CX-5, which wasn’t available on most crossovers, and is still not available on the 2025 Forester. Keeping things simple has really benefited Subaru, but Mazda’s premium/luxury features have set it apart and brought some much needed enjoyment and refinement to a relatively uninspiring vehicle category.
@skimanfree10732 күн бұрын
What's HUD?
@eddiem4882 күн бұрын
@ It stands for Head-Up Display or it’s sometimes called an active driving display. It’s located above the gauge cluster and is often imbedded right into the dashboard. It projects information either directly onto the windshield or on a clear plastic panel. It’s meant to help keep a driver’s eyes on the road and avoid have to constantly check your gauge cluster for basic info. Most HUDs also work with the navigation system to project GPS directions and street names.
@skimanfree10732 күн бұрын
@@eddiem488 OK, Thanks. I have that on my Hyundai

@ Nice! Yeah a lot like Mazda, Hyundai has them on most of their vehicles in higher trims. Sadly, Subaru doesn’t offer a HUD on the Forester. Being low-tech is not a bad thing by any means, because at least it has allowed Subaru to focus on their reliability. Mazda on the other hand doesn’t have nearly as many features as Hyundai, but they do a great job of balancing simple and practical tech with innovative and reliable engineering.

I like the fact that Mazda has a real transmission, whereas Forester uses CVT. The acceleration of Forester is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE!! Forester is clearly under-powered! Considering you are going to spend 99 percent of your time driving and not camping, Mazda CX5 is the BEST CHOICE! It's an EXTREMELY FUN CAR TO DRIVE, VERY STYLISH, WITH PLENTY OF CHARISMA AND THE BEST LOOKING INTERIOR! If you wanna LOOK GOOD, WANT AN SUV THAT DRIVES AND FEELS LIKE A SPORTS CAR, THEN GET A CX5! You don't need to compromise if you get the CX5! You may also want to consider the CX-50 which is the bigger version of CX-5 and yes, CX-50 comes with a hybrid version as well for better gas mileage. But, I would rather go with the Turbo version which is SO MUCH FUN TO DRIVE!!!! -:) If you wanna look like any other a run-of-the-mill, boring Joe /Gale off the street, then go and settle with Forester.

@@yang_goon_ca What are the benefits of an automatic transmission?

I also prefer torque converter automatic transmissions to CVT's, and there was nothing wrong with Subaru's pre-existing traditional automatic transmission before they switched to CVT's. Having said that, it seems Subaru make some of the most reliable CVT's in the auto industry. CVT's in Subaru's aren't the red flag they are in some other brands. For example, in American cars if you are buying a car with a CVT it means you are likely buying among the most cheaply made cars that the brand sells.

Subaru design is ugly AF

True, but what really matters is beauty inside. Seriously, Subaru's interior is more fun, IMHO.
