Great theme song for the photos.. it's nice to see faces to go along with reading names and what each one did in the war.. I know they fought to have freedom from the Union, but it's kinda hard to look at them knowing they had families and just didn't wanna live peacefully in life till ole age, only to give it all up for war battles and death.. another awesome episode.. thank u for sharing.. from South Carolina..

I’ve been fascinated with the war between the states since I was 14 years old (I’m now 66!). At that time I was a teen age high school student living in the UK doing a project on the battle between the CSS Merrimack and USS Monitor. Your photos are fascinating. I particularly like the way they detail the uniform, side arms, percussion cap pouches, canteens etc. Awesome! I am a little curious though about the picture orientation. They seem to be mirror images. Why is that? Also, at 4.14 there is a picture of Lt Robert Pryor James, Co E, 20th North Carolina Infantry. His belt buckle clearly has US stamped on it, not CSA. There also appears to be a bullet hole in his tunic at waist level off to the right. Very intriguing!

Thanks for the kind words and coming along on these trips to the past. To answer your questions (the best I can) many of the images are reversed due to the photographic processes of the time. In some instances (if I am trying to make out an insignia etc.) I will flip them in my software, but I prefer to leave them as original as much as possible. As to the US buckle, Confederate soldiers were just Americans who suddenly found themselves living in a new country (the Confederacy,) as such, many of them were or had already been US soldiers(many were in fact already US veterans of previous wars.) When the war first erupted there really were no Confederate uniforms per se and so many soldiers simply marched off to war in what they had. In the case of previous US veterans it was convenient to wear their existing uniforms. As to the bullet hole, I’m not sure if he was shot previously but many of these fellers returned to combat after horrific wounds. Men of a different ilk I suppose.

What id you notice in all of the pictures, there are no smiles.. these were true men ready to fight to the death for a cause they bekieved in, they didn't run, they didn't hide nor did they shirk their duty. So young, so brave, and so missed by their young wives waiting at home who didn't see them til heaven called ....god bless and they weren't called rebels for nothing....they fought til the death for a cause they believed in against all odds.

People want to paint confederate soldiers in a bad light, saying it was about slavery. It was really about States Rights, sort of what we face today on the abortion issue. There were over one million Confederate Soldiers, many had no slaves. They can’t all be slave owners. My second great grand father was one of them. He fought with the 33d Alabama Infantry.

0:24 Glad to see William Ward of the 9th Tennessee Cavalry. My GG GF Sam Stafford enlisted with Ward near Hartsville, Tennessee when the 9th Tennessee was organized. They rode with Morgan; Sam was captured near Bardstown, KY during Morgan's Great Raid and imprisoned at Camp Douglas in Chicago. He survived and married in 1865. My G GM Cora Stafford was born to Sam and his wife Permelia Watson in 1874.

Thank you. I love the montages you put together on the various units. I am curious where you find the pictures? I have been looking for pictures of the 9th Virginia Cavalry, Co C. 3 Wheelwrights, kin of my wife, served in that company; a father and his two sons. All survived the war, though both sons were wounded. A younger son, Joseph, did not. He was one of the ten VMI students that died at New Market, so his name is called out every May 15th. I do have a photo of the father, Frederick Dodge Wheelwright, but none of the sons.

@@BirdDogg Thanks, Fred Sr was a surgeon with them and his father held a brief command with the CSA. Fascinating family history though. His first wife died and he married a Hungerford. 2 of her brothers died in the 9th. He came from a family that arrived in 1630 and had an amazing colonial history going back to Rev John Wheelwright, founder of Exeter, NH.

Notice that some of these images are backwards, like mirror reverse. You can tell by the hammers on the muskets as they are on the wrong side. The famous image of Billy the Kid was backwards which led people to believe he was a left handed gun. Someone finally figured out the receiver on his rifle was on the wrong side, so that indicated the print was reversed.
