Rod Stewart (vocals), Ronnie Wood (now guitarist the Stones), Kenny Jones (joined The Who as drummer when Keith Moon died), Ronnie Lane (bass), Ian McLagan (keyboards). Brilliant English rock&roll band from the early '70s. And yes, most of the musicians played on Rod's early solo albums.

I was blessed to have traveled with these boyz in 70-74. Boy, do I have the stories? Stewart and the Boyz were rockers and party animals in the late 60s and early 70s. Rod decided to do his own thing and Ronnie went to the Stones. I traveled with them in 71-73 when I was with Mercury Records. OMG, what a time I had. A single guy in his 20s, women up the A** every night. Parties and more parties. Running for cover and having police have to get us into our hotels. Guys I got stories for ya. I don't know how we survived a winter/spring and early Rod, Ron, Ronnie, Ian, and Kenny all raised a lot of hell. They along with Peter Buckland, Chooch, and some other roadies raised so so so much hell. IF ANYONE saw them they know what I am saying. Detroit was the most awesome though of all. Detroit LOVED The Faces. We used to have to register as Fleetwood Mac in the early days because Rod and Rod and the boyz partied it up and tore it down too hard in the early days. 1971 We started US Leg in FL on Feb 12 and we ended on Dec 17 in Chicago. I remember it all so well. Nevertheless, there were 88 dates US/Canada/UK/Germany/Austria/Belgium/France It wasn't an easy itinerary. It was split up and with all the partying and traveling. It was a memory of my lifetime.

Rod Stewart got his start with the Jeff Beck Group on the Truth and Beck-Ola albums, some great rock albums. Ron Wood on bass, Nicky Hopkins on keyboards, John Paul Jones, Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, all appear on Jeff Beck's first two albums playing on various tracks. Some of the greatest talent in British rock.

Rod Stewart never sang with as big a set of balls again once he left The Faces! Truly one hell of a band with bassist/singer/songwriter Ronnie Lane being the heart and soul of this band!

The band was previously known as the Small Faces prior to Rod Stewart joining the band with Ronnie Wood. You should look into The Small Faces with Steve Marriott, he was a force of nature in the 60’s he then formed Humble Pie with Peter Frampton.

Rod Stewart signed a solo contract (1969) shortly before joining "Faces." His solo career took off about a year or so later, which both brought attention to the band and eventually overshadowed it. To his credit, Rod seemed to try to remain just one of the guys and put the band first, but promoters would do things like bill shows as "Rod Stewart and the Faces" to sell more tickets. This led to (founding member and I would say the heart of the band) Ronnie Lane leaving out of fear Rod would leave them. "Faces" were born out of the ashes of a pretty successful 60's band "The Small Faces (1965-69)." Ron Wood and Rod Stewart were brought in to replace Steve Marriot on guitar and vocals. Marriot had left the band to form "Humble Pie" with Peter Frampton.

I agree that "The Universal" is a sadly underrated song. Steve loved it, thought the lyrics were the best he had ever written, although I think he did an amazing job at songwriting all their songs (some with Ronnie). Sadly, others in the group didn't agree, and when it only reached #16 on the charts (many other groups would have died to have their songs get in the top 20), Steve thought he had failed the band and used it as one of his reasons for quitting. I think the song is much more appreciated now than it was at the time.

They were kind of a supergroup the regular way, really. All the members already were successful before they joined together. Besides, only two of the members went on to play in (other) great bands. If you want to check out some music from when Rod first became famous, you have to go even a little further back when he was singing in Jeff Beck's band. Jeff was the guy who introduced Rod Stewart to America when Jeff's band toured here. Try Jeff's album "Truth", which included Faces (and future Rolling Stone) guitarist Ron Wood playing some killer bass. It includes cameo performances by Keith Moon and half of what became Led Zeppelin. (I'll go to my grave convinced that Zeppelin's first album was HEAVILY influenced by "Truth".) Check out "Let Me Love You" from that album for a completely different vibe, a different style for Rod, but still as recognizable as he is today.

Nice! Great reaction, great suggestion. Rod has made a number of classics, and this is certainly one. People from many musical backgrounds can appreciate a great record like this. He started out as the bluesy roots-rocker that you hear here, and progressed to being more of a pop crooner in his solo career, with hits like Do Ya Think I'm Sexy, and Tonight's the Night. If you find out, please tell us what Rod(s) your mother knows. I prefer his early stuff, but his voice and delivery are always fantastic regardless. I think you should personally give Every Picture Tells A Story another chance. It's my favorite Rod Stewart record. All the best.

Jeff Beck Group in 67 (with Ronnie Wood), 1st solo lp in 69, also joined Faces together with Ronnie Wood (formerly Small Faces with Steve Marriott as lead vocalist) while simultaneously continuing with solo lps, Gasoline Alley in 70, Every Picture Tells A Story in 71 which made him a superstar. This tune is from A Nod Is As Good As A Wink To A Blind Horse -- the 3rd Faces lp. Eventually, Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones and drummer Kenney Jones joined The Who. When Marriott left Small Faces to form Humble Pie, he was replaced by Stewart and Wood and the name changed to just Faces. Before joining (Small) Faces, Stewart already had signed a solo contract. If you play the entire Nod lp, you will have a good time.

Guitarist Ronnie Wood joined the Rolling Stones after The Faces broke up. He's still with the Stones, 50 years later. The other three - Ian McLagan, Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones - were 3/4 of another incredible band, The Small Faces (a 'Face' was a term in UK 60s Mod slang for the coolest of the cool and Small comes from everyone in the band being short and slim). When lead singer Steve Marriott left to form Humble Pie, Stewart and Wood joined but, both being tall, the group dropped the Small from their name. There's dozens of songs from The Faces, The Small Faces and Humble Pie that are well worth checking out. You pretty much can't go wrong with any of them. For Humble Pie, I strongly suggest the live TV version of Black Coffee. If you like Rod Stewart's voice for Rock, you're going to love Steve Marriott's.
