(1) Viewing the old funeral lift structure off of the railroad tracks, history of the old train station.
(2) Leonard Wells Volk, an American sculptor. He is notable for making one of only two life masks of United States President Abraham Lincoln. In 1867 he helped establish the Chicago Academy of Design and served as its president until 1878.
(3) Robert "Bobby" Peterson, one of the victims of the Peterson-Schuessler murders
On October 18, 1955. The naked bodies of three young boys, John Schuessler, aged 13, his brother Anton Jr., aged 11, and their friend Robert Peterson, aged 14, were found in a ditch in the Robinson Woods Forest Preserve on the northwest side of Chicago.
(4) Horatio N. May Chapel, which was built in 1899, was designed by architect Joseph Lyman Silsbee. It is designed in a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles.
(5) George Bangs, an American businessman who began his adult life working in private ventures including printing, shoes, farming and journalism before becoming postmaster of Aurora, Illinois in 1861. During his postal career, he worked with the Railway Mail Service (RMS). There he improved the mail sorting system on trains and was the most prominent advocate of "fast-mail" express mail trains.
(6) Robert "Bobby" Franks, the central victim of one of the "crimes of the 19th century" - Murder Victim. He was the son of a wealthy Chicago, Illinois businessman and was murdered when he was 14 years old after he was kidnapped by Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb in May 1924.
(7) Frances M. Pearce Stone, THE MOST PHOTOGRAPHED MONUMENT IN ROSEHILL CEMETERY. 17 year old wife of Horatio Odell Stone, who was the wealthy owner of H O Stone & Co , managers of real estate and dealers in mortgages. Frances died the year after they were married and their 10 month infant daughter died very shortly thereafter.

The Leopold and Loeb case was the first true murder case I ever read a book about. I was 12 or 13 at the time. I am 65 now and I still don't understand the concept of murdering to see how it feels, for the thrill of it, to show you're smarter than anyone. Thank-you for honoring their victim, Bobby Franks.

My father worked at Rose Hill for over 50 years! My brother & I used to go with my dad & run around the cemetery like a park. It was good to see the place again. My parents are both buried there.

My stepfather grew up at the Chicago Home for Jewish Orphans on the south side. Every year Bobby and his family visited and donated a dinner for all the kids. I think it was for Thanksgiving.

I used to work in a cemetery in Connecticut years ago and that mounded over building is a holding vault for people who died in the winter and had to wait until the spring thaw to open up the ground. Out of experience we used to dig in the winter using a ground warmer 3’ x 8’ with propane torch attached. I have seen the frost in the ground go down 4 feet when the temperature remained below zero degrees Fahrenheit.for a week straight.

@@marietomkinson5910 I should mention snow on the ground is a great insulator and if temps are below zero without snow the frozen earth would freeze much deeper. Then you get snow and heat from the earth thaws out the frozen earth and you may have about a foot and 1/2 frozen deep. Of course conditions can very. You have perma frost the closer you get to the North Pole.

I read the story on Bobby Franks many years ago, and it was so sad. To kill a young boy, just to see what it was like to murder, is so despicable. Two spoiled useless little rich boys, bored and nothing to do , but ruin a families life, and take a life. I believe it was Clarence Darrow who was the Lawyer, he was famous for getting people off. There are so many beautiful tombstones in that cemetery, and much history. The mother, and daughter was so sad. Thank you so much.

More Civil war generals are buried here than any other cemetery in the country, my personal favorite memory of Rosehill happened while I was working Public Safety at Edgewater Hospital directly east of the cemetery, ( Dr Mazel, who founded Edgewater is buried at Rosehill) One night the Chicago police were chasing a subject in a stolen car, the individual pulled up to the Foster Street wall of the cemetery, jumped on the roof of the car, and into the cemetery, the dogs were called out and the cemetery searched, the dogs reacted to a group of bushes and the fearless boys of Foster Ave leaped into the brush to apprehend their man... And got hosed by a whole family of skunks! The affected officers showed up at Edgewaters ER begging for help, the doc on duty was a city boy with no clue about how to help them so I took charge I sent them to a fire exit stairwell at the bottom of which was the physical therapy departments tub room, I went to the kitchen and got all of the tomato juice they had I had the cops bag their uniforms and took them to the incinerator the cops soaked down with the tomato juice and showered then we gave them scrubs and sent them on their merry way!

@Ernest Clements...... I love that story, a skunks smell is so hard to get rid of. A guy I knew when I was growing up had this big bright idea (a stupid idea) to beat a skunk with a big tree branch. Well, the skunk sprayed him and walked away.😂😂 He smelled like that skunk for a long time after that. And he had taken several tomato juice baths. When ever he came in our house, I ran him out, the smell was horrible.😂

Many years ago my mother told me a story that her parents (who ran a regional newspaper in Wisconsin and were involved in business concerns in Chicago) had run in some of the same circles as the families of the Leopold and Loeb had. The gossip was that both families had been devastated by what their children had done and the Leopold family blamed the ill health of Nathan Sr suffered from on the stress of living with what his son did. He died a couple of years after the murder.

One of the father's died shortly after his son's conviction, another father, died a few years later. Within 5 years, all of their fathers were dead. Leopold's brothers, changed their last name, thus, not to identify with their brother.

On this story I was going to see if you could do a piece on it. I took care of Mr. Peterson who was living in The Devonshire of Hoffman Estates Illinois ( a retire community) He and his wife lived there for years she passed of Alzheimer’s 2 yrs before he passed, I was a caregiver there and he was such a caring man (He loved to sing) long story short, When he passed there was a book left in his apartment and the cleaning lady knew I really cared for him so she gave me this book 3 lost boys or 3 boys I can’t remember? But as I read the book I could not believe this was about his son and 2 other boys I cried through the entire book that’s how sad it was. Thank you so much for doing this on them.

I would have thought the plot and spaces on the tombstone here would have been for the parents rather than a sibling, but if they were buried next to their murdered son, their survivors did not have their names and dates chiseled on it. Sadly, that happens more often than one would think.

Such a beautiful cemetery my family is buried there and my mother worked there 20 years ago. She had lots of ghost sightings. The cemetery was designed by the same man that designed the famous water tower downtown. Used to love coming here. The caretakers of the cemetery have sworn they have seen the mist .

When I was a young man we used to spend the night tripping on Acid there. There's so many interesting gravestones and famous people buried there. Lots of crazy story's .

Been there, done that. What better place for interdimensional travel than in an historic burial ground. We would read the old stones with a Bic lighter and groove over the morbid and unusual inscriptions. We live in an area with stones that go back to the late 1600s, so some of the early black slate gravestones had bizarre figures carved in them, such as skulls with wings and other gothic memento mori carvings.

I rewatched this episode. I first watched it 8 months ago. I like how you mix in good stories about important things people did so that it isn't all only about something crime related. It is a healthy balance. 9:58 The 5 arches. I love that. I have 5 arches on my patio done the same way but in brick (and round arches, not Gothic). Something my Mom and I dreamed of for many years that we designed into the plans for my house in Warner Robins. I have pics of it on my Facebook page pinned to the top. I was also inspired from my trip to Florence, Italy, in summer of 2014 (business trip). I incorporated many changes into the designs of my house plans (lots of arches),...built in 2015. That tree, train, train tunnel sculpture was so unique. So interesting to hear the history on that man. The deer wildlife were beautiful. Still young enough to be sporting spots on its coat. Those two criminals always creep me out. I remember a Hitchcock movie which echoed the story. 22:58 Look at the dead eyes that creep has. No feeling. No remorse except that he got caught. Like there is no thought at all of anyone but himself. Eyes are the windows to the soul. Wretched mind behind those eyes. I wonder if these creeps' parents were just as creepy as them or did they have enough sense to be horrified at the evil their sons unleashed. I wonder was it a case of the apple not falling far from the tree or were these creeps born without a conscience. So glad people are paying respects to this family who endured such tragedy. They carried that pain all the years of their lives. 26:26 Such a beautiful statue of mother and baby at the end of the video. Only thing is, I bet his first wife wonders why he didn't commission a statue to her and her two kids. 😬 My favotite part is all the many folds in the fabric and how the sculptor turns stone into such an amazing masterpiece.

Hi , Mr. Leopold was released in 1958 and moved to Puerto Rico ,were he died in 1972 . Nietzsche eventually went insane I studied Philosophy in University and some of Nietzche's work was novel , but the hard core Nietzsche students used to creep me out . Leopold and Loeb were just cowards. Picking on a 14 year old boy ! Why not pick on someone their own size ? Why choose Bobby Frank's. ? I don't think that question was ever answered. The orginal kid you talked about , I remember the story how the three boys were supposed to see a movie and they got picked up by the monster that murdered them and sexually assaulted them . He did unspeakable things to them while they were alive . Question : Are there woods near the cemetery or are those the deer only deer there ? It's almost like they don't mind the car traffic or the people. I recognized the sculpture of lady ( stone ) made in Italy . You don't find that degree of detail in the US at the time of the deaths . Wealthy families had sculptures imported monuments from Italy back in the early 1900s . But this cemetery contain plenty of art. Mr. Volk's sculpture, had a piece of iron sticking out of the armpit , there is probably more in the sculpture, it acts like a skeleton for the sculpture. Too bad you could not get into the underground area connected to the chapel. May be you might be able to speak with the cemetery administrators and they will let you take a tour ? Cheers.

Thank you for touring Rosehill! I have two grandparents, an aunt and uncle buried there. My grandfather bought seven plots in 1935. That year my aunt died of ectopic pregnancy and my uncle of heart failure brought on by rheumatic fever. No antibiotics in those days.😢

My mum was buried east of May Chappel 3 months ago. Inside the church is very beautiful, it was copied from a German church according to the Cemetery director when we had a vigil in December for all those that passed in 2023 and were buried at Rosehill. Very nice of them to do that, hot chocolate, pastries and gifts.

Justice? Bobby, did not get justice. Those two, should have spent the rest of their lives in jail. Well, at least Leopold. Loeb, got killed while in prison. Leopold, got out, made friends, got a wife, traveled, got another degree, and taught. He never showed any remorse for what he did.

This young man missed another Chicago notable. Edwin G. Foreman who as a Jewish business man & banker. He died in 1915. His interment is in an above ground vault. There is a Chicago high school on the Northwest side of the City of Chicago. Edwin G. Foreman high school. The first graduating class of Foreman H.S. was in 1928. The high school is on Belmont Avenue near Cicero Avenue in Chicago. I went to Foreman H.S. & I am from the graduating class of Jan. 1962. The Edwin G. Foreman H.S. is still there as of today. I do not know the circumstances that caused this public H.S. to be named after him.. Edwin G. Foreman 1862-1915. R.I.P.

By the way, I’m not one of those guys who just goes looking for notable people at cemeteries. So I didn’t miss anyone notable here that I was interested in. I’m doing stories on certain people and then I go find them. And if you were to do a story on everybody notable at Rose Hill cemetery, you would have a six hour program. No one would like it

@@FacesoftheForgotten Okay. Maybe next time you can find the Foreman burial vault. It is worthwhile, because Edwin G. Foreman DID have a public high school named after him. The H.S. school itself is still functioning. Three stories high. Half of the third floor was (or still is) devoted for college courses only. We (students) were not permitted to enter that area of the school. I took 4 years of R.O.T.C. & graduated with 86 others kids. Never saw any of them again. Those were great times for me.

Albert Loeb (along with a number of Loebs) , father of Richard Loeb, is buried in Rosehill as well. The graves I believe are like 25 feet from each other.

One was killed for making advances on an inmate he was jailed with. One wrote books and volunteered for medical experiments to improve vaccines and treatments for soldiers. He actually got paroled and died on some island. Not living it up just writing more about birds. Those young men don't deserve sympathy but at least one tried to atone. He actually got some of the first small pox or polio vaccines if I'm not mistaken.

Rosehill is one of my favorites, I take walk through it all the time. The Jewish section on the south part of the cemetery is really nice.

I think it would be wonderful if you found and did a story on Curtis Hansen. He died in the North Chicago VA Hospital. The ATF had to take a picture of his grave marker for Herb Holetz to come to Chicago for the Peterson Schluster trial. Curt was a "Hitman" for Jimmy Catuara

you and I chatted about that. I actually put a private investigator on it, I told him what you told me that he died up at the VA, up north shore. no luck. I actually paid money! dead ends. If you have any more, let me know...I want to go to his grave and tell some of the stories in your awesome book....like when you first arrived at his "complex", the food, the pool, the parties, etc. he was a fat guy! (then I could plug your book on the video, which I have no problem doing...I just need his grave location)

Up near the corner of what is now Western and Peterson, there was a tavern at the top of a hill. It was owned by a guy named Roe. When folks wanted a drink they'd go to Roe's hill instead of calling it a tavern or saloon. Note it was still very rural and a good distance from Chicago. Allan Pinkerton is buried at Rosehill too.

I would be interested if you could get a picture or find where Peabody’s tomb is. legend is Peabody coal magnet left a lot of money to some monks in the Oak Brook area under the condition that he was placed in a glass coffin and they would pray for him every day. Many of the kids from proviso West would try to sneak on to the monastery grounds and get pics

The grave of Mr. Peabody no longer exists on the property and was transferred to Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside, next to Mount Carmel. It is said he is in the Plot of the Franciscan Friars Section 7 Grave 1. It might be interesting in summer to go look there, I will add to my list. Good one!! Special Oympian Mary Ann maybe had Downs Syndrone. Used to end lives quite young, around 12 to 15. But medical advances have increased quality and quantity of life nowdays... 50s, 60s, and up.

When I was a kid in the 1950s and 60s the main line that ran from New Orleans to Chicago through Mississippi was the Illinois Central RR. It was a lot of fun to watch from Duck Hill, Mississippi, (from the same place Rube Burrows hopped aboard the engine and robbed on Christmas Eve night) as the long line of brown passenger cars passed by at breakneck speed, and watching the mail bag be picked up and another delivered from a fast moving train! Remember the Dobie Gillis show with the thinker statue shown when Dobie was reflecting on life! And beatnik Matnord T. Crepts freaked out over the word "Work?"

Looks like the statue had been busted up entirely and reassembled. A shame. Someone in a comment here was saying how he and buddies would go to the cemetery and do acid. 🤦🏻‍♀️. Maybe they thought the elk needed killing?

I would guess Peter's parents/ family moved away at some point and that's why only Peter is buried there next to a blank spot for more names on the marker.

I wonder if there was a pandemic or even just a local hot spot for a certain disease during the time period of mother and daughter. The reason why I say that is becajse the close proximity of the dates of death. Or little child due to illness and mama had died due to childbirth/pregnancy related illness of a potential 2nd child. These are some of the thoughts and what happened
