People have been executed for the entirety of our existence. Nothing deters violence. It's programmed into us. We have more people in prison than any other country. That never stops people from doing what they want to do. My two best friends growing up were involved in "law inforcement". One retired the county sherrif and the other retired as a prison warden "I retired from the US Army". They say there are too many things we can't controll in the human mind. There is no way to prevent people from hurting people.

Thank you for doing this video. I took my kids to South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and we stayed a night in Deadwood at the Bullock Hotel. It was a fantastic experience. We also visited the graves of Wild Bill, Calamity Jane and Bullock himself. I wish I had done more research so that I could visit this grave that you highlight. And if you are up for a spooky night, stay at the Bullock Hotel. It is definitely haunted.

I love when unmarked graves are restored. In the 1980s myself and a friend arranged a stone for the grave of vampire expert and scholar of gothic literature the Rev Montague Summers which had been unmarked for over 40 years since his death in Richmond, London UK. I hope more people get interested in this kind of thing. As I am fascinated by Wild Bill this was a great watch, so thank you.

This photo was most likely taken from his first burial, because he wouldn’t have been hung in those clothes. The rope may or may not be authentic but if the undertaker had the presence to take a photo, he had the presence of mind to add the rope. Probably sold the pictures as post cards.

Thank you for historical corrections I needed. I didn't know Jack made it to Yankton. I was told the minute he shot Wild Bill, he was angrily grabbed up by a mob, taken to a quickly-convened court, immediately found guilty, and hung, all right there in Deadwood. That telling did include him buried with the noose in place, but your finding Jack in Yankton serves to correct legend and establish history. Another of your great ones.

I lived in Yankton for 10 years during my college days. I graduated from Yankton College which is now a minimum security Federal Prison Camp after closing as a school in 1984. Later the BOP purchased the property and converted it to the prison that exists today. When I first arrived in Yankton in the late summer of 1970, there was a small brass plate on the side of the Gurney Hotel that commemorated the site in downtown Yankton where the hanging of Blackjack McCall took place! I don’t know if that plaque is still there but I’ll check for it the next time I’m in town for a college reunion.

Extraordinary! The social history of America is endlessly fascinating to me, even as a British national living in the UK. I've been lucky to travel all over the country, and lived in NYC for a couple of years, but the West is the bit I find most absorbing. Europeans heading west across unknown and sometimes impossible terrain in intolerably hot or cold weather, occasionally assailed by the indigenous people, more often than not no proper law enforcement (like today actually!), it is incredible that we can all follow historically significant events that happened so relatively recently. This story is phenomenal, and it's great that you've explained it clearly and highlighted it here. Thank you for making this very informative video sir.

That’s my ancestor. My mother’s last name is McCall. We have the family tree going back all the way to the mayflower. John “Jack” McCall or Crooked Nose Jack as he was called, is on that tree. A lot of us ended up in Fresno California, Texas and Tennessee from what I know.

Hello, I just found your video about Wild Bill Hickok and Jack McCall. I am related to Wild Bill. My mothers maiden name is Hickok. Many years ago my Aunt (mothers sister) went on a historical fact finding adventure to verify that we Hickok are blood related to The Wild Bill Hickok . She was successful in verifying that which was a incredibly difficult and time consuming effort for her since this all happened before the internet. An unusual violation of "Double Jeopardy". He got off in Deadwood originally, and then tried again somewhere else and found guilty! I think they considered the court in Deadwood to be either a fraud, or unofficial on some technicality.....so they avoided the double jeopardy thing....one of the only examples in US history!

The story you told mirrors my Grandfather's story except for 2 things... In Nebraska , WILD BILL HICKOK told the story to my Great Grandfather while my great granfather was repairing (replacing?) a shoe on Hickok's horse. Yes, a "Wild Bill" did get shot in the back of his head at that poker game, but not "THE" Wild Bill "Hickok" as told in the stories. You even confirmed it in your story without knowing it. By not getting his "Lucky seat at the table," The real Hickok didn't join in on that game. Now by this time, Hickok's whereabouts became known and he was being hunted down, so he headed towards Mexico. He was on his way to a town to sell his horse and catch a train but his horse got a bad shoe on the way. My Grandfather told us the story of him getting on a stool and fence to comb Hickok's horse and Hickok paying him with a "whole silver dollar!" The same story was told in 1972 by the son of a ranch hand my great grandfather had working for him. The timeline checks out.

Just a bit of trivia to go along with this story, Charlie Rich, mentioned at approximately 6:18 in the video, was the man who dealt the Aces and Eights hand to Wild Bill, Find A Grave number 2512, and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Miamiville, Clermont County, Ohio. His large black marker is to the left as you enter the cemetery.

I did a bit of searching and this is probably were the incorrect location of his final resting place came from, excerpt:McCall was buried in the southwest corner of Yankton’s Catholic cemetery. In 1881, when the cemetery was moved to make room for the Territorial Insane Hospital, his body was exhumed, and it was discovered that he had been buried with the noose still around his neck. Though his remains were reburied in an unmarked grave in the Yankton Cemetery, the exact location was lost over time and remains unknown today. Next time I am in Vermillion SD visiting family, I will have to visit this grave. I have already been to Wild Bill's and Calamity Jane's old graves in the mid-60s and saw the play. We were last in line and the actors, two deputies and Jack McCall, were right behind us and the actor who played Jack McCall sneered at me. I buried my face in my mom's leg, scared. The actor who played the town drunk was hilarious. Everyone needs to go to this play during Deadwood Days.

We had a beer in the bar where this happened. The chair Wild Bill was sitting in when he was shot was hanging up on the wall. That was many years ago & the bar has been revamped.

There appears to be only 4 turns on Jack McCall's hangman's noose. I always thought that a proper executener's noose had 13 turns, especially from a scaffold and not from a saddle to a tree branch. Jack is still grave yard dead, but isn't there a standard hangman's noose? Was there a rope shortage at the time?

A noose needed a certain thickness to cause neck to break. The 13 loops is just a myth. When hanging was standardized by the government as execution, they used a 1" rope and 12" of knot. Fall had to be at least 7' and they were weighed beforehand so the drop height was accurate
