Crafting facial prosthetics requires a combination of fine art and medical skills. Greg Gion, an anaplastologist, comes from a fine arts background and has been designing facial prostheses since the 1980s. Most of the pieces he makes are for people who have lost facial features to either cancer or accidents.

I'm half cute and I'm outcast for almost 40 years, they never wanna hire me think im never good enough plus I never had a relationship not friends for almost 40 years now. If society doesn't like me, even worse these ppl. They must be super lonely, humanity should have a friendship program for these ppl, besides the prosthetics, so they grow old happier, forgetting how dreadful life was to them. I can't imagine how outcast they must be. Once when I was working by myself on street, I met a woman in a half fallen house, crawled to the door and i sat to give her attention. She was poor, didn't walk on legs so had to drag herself over the broken tiles. But she didn't look dreadful and was nice to me, gave me a clean cup of milk. She said never in her life nobody visited her and ppl avoided her. I saw no reason for that. Maybe I'm outcast cuz I don't see the prejudice. But there are many ppl out there who are pleasant and humble. But society seem to only value Instagram beauties and rich doc men. I don't understand society. That woman made me good company, we spoke for 1h and had fun. The world is broke.

Oh my goddddd this is amazing!!!! I’ve never said “oh my god” so many times in 3 minutes and 58 seconds! I can’t believe how real and seamless these prosthetics look! What amazing skills these people have who create them! What an amazing time we live in! I can’t believe some of these people’s injuries though! It’s very unfortunate the things that happened to them, but how incredible that they were so lucky to be able to get prosthetics that are so realistic and undetectable! The whole thing is astonishing!

I had a friend who had his nose sheared off his face in a workplace accident. He was in his 20's and went and got a prosthetic nose. It looked pretty good(you bring in photos of what you looked like prior to the accident)but he hated wearing it and would often just take it off. He was totally charming and once you got over the shock of him missing his nose, you kinda got used to it! We'd all go out to the bars together in a big group and we'd always wait and see if he was gonna take his nose off!!!

This is so hard to watch. It's incredible how much the human psyche is programmed to feel repulsed by incompletion in the head area more than anywhere else. I think it's more about seeing what's supposed to be the inside of the body just being exposed like that, it's a bit too intimate. Its one thing to have a missing eye, quite a few do and don't look scary at all, but to be able to see the inside of the head brings on a feeling of secondhand discomfort, because it looks painful to have a hole in your face. Just a theory.
