Just a crazy idea: add more glycerol in the recipe, this should slow down the speed of crosslinking or inhibit it. Then, whasing the hydrogel in water the glycerol could be extracted. I can not guarantee that this will work. Best

In my opinion the chitosan should be washed when it is in base form (it should not gel), after the hydrolysis with NaOH. Then, after acidification it will became a gel and adding water it will disperse and viscosizing the solution.

Dear jeff, the recipe was: 58 g of a 1.5% Guar gum and 5% glycerin solution mixed with 7.5 ml of a 4% borax solution. If we consider approximately the density of such solutions equal to 1, 65.5 ml (58+7.5) of final material will contain 1.33% guar, 4.43% glycerin, 0.46% borax and so 100-1.33-4.43-0.46= 93.75 ml of water.
@JeffYuYaoChiun
@JeffYuYaoChiun Жыл бұрын
I am specifically referring to 4:05 in the video, when you mentioned decreasing the water content for a denser hydrogel. Thus instead of 1.5% guar gum, what was the higher concentration?
@sasarello8124
@sasarello8124 Жыл бұрын
Dear Jeff, honestry the samples was left to dry at room temperture and so it lost moisture. Unfortunately I can't retrieve the exact number. Two suggestions: 1) prepare the 1.5% guar gum gel as in the video and let it to loose moisture (room T or into a ventilated oven at 40°C) or 2) start directly with an higer concentration of guar gum (e.g. 2%) but in this case will be difficult to prepare a gel with high concentration of polymer. I would prefer the first method 1)@@JeffYuYaoChiun

@sasarello8124

@@likithj638 I looked at the video: in fact there can be some confusion. As regards the preparation of the gel, 0.45 g of guar are used on a total volume of 50 g, so the concentration is about 0.90%. But when crosslinking I used a 1.5% guar solution so to prepare 58 g as in the video you have to use the following recipe: 0.87 g guar + 2.9 g glycerin to 58 g with water. Then crosslink by adding 7.5 ml of a 4% borax solution. Let me know if this finally works!

@sasarello8124
@sasarello8124 Жыл бұрын
Yes, 4% means wt/wt. Regards time before reaction, I would say that is very fast; it depends on the concentration of the borate solution but I would say it is a matter of 10-30 seconds.

Is it possible to synthesis a version of this that is hyperthin, perhaps thinner than a millimeter?
@sasarello8124
@sasarello8124 3 ай бұрын
I think yes. You can try depositing a thin layer on a glass slide and wait, the nature of the gel will cause it to flow and decrease in thickness. Alternatively, you can deposit a more diluted solution and wait for the excess water to evaporate by decreasing the thickness

Hi, I'm planning to manufacture my own non-toxic and ideally natural hydrogel, guar gum, glycerin and the deionized water are alright, but I'm worried about the borax solution, where the FDA considers it a toxic chemical agent and could cause unwanted symptoms. 1. Is Borax Solution safe for medical application for wounds and for medicine in general? 2. Is Borax Solution really needed? 3. Is there an non-toxic or natural alternative to borax solution? 4. What study did you base this on? Thanks for your response.
@sasarello8124
@sasarello8124 2 жыл бұрын
Dear kommandank, Borate has a long history of safe practice into consumer products, (e.g. detergents). However, it is under investigation by authorities since a lot of years. Unfortunately there are not, in my knowlede, substitutes that works in the same way for guar gum. I would suggest you to try another gel system based on sodium alginate crosslinked with calcium ions. Best regards.

can you explain how to make it injectable?
@sasarello8124
@sasarello8124 2 жыл бұрын
I hope this answer is not too simplistic: in the indicated proportion the gel can be aspirated and dispensed from a syringe. Regarding why this happens, I believe that the nature of these gels is very sensitive to shear stresses: if not subjected to shear they can appear solid but once subjected to a shear force their viscosity decreases. For example, sand mixed with water in a container can be solid but if you start vibrating it becomes liquid.
