Chris Akin, GISP, from Paratum Solutions hosted the inaugural webinar in the Spatial Solutions series, highlighting facility management using GIS and geospatial technologies. Peter Palacios, CEFP, Director of Operations at the University of North Texas (UNT), shared his experience managing facility assets and infrastructure across campus. The discussion emphasized the use of GIS technology to improve facilities management. The webinar was intended to be the first in a series of monthly sessions discussing different solutions and technologies for facility managers.
Chris first discussed the challenges faced by institutions, including inaccessibility and disconnection of data, and the need for better methods to capture and share knowledge.
Peter then provided an overview of UNT, highlighting the institution's vast campus and the use of spatial technologies, like GIS, to manage it. He discussed the challenges of managing a large asset portfolio, the benefits of leveraging GIS technologies, and the importance of keeping the official campus map up to date. Peter also discussed the systematic collection and integration of asset data for improved tracking and management. He explained the use of rudimentary tools and advanced survey tools to gather accurate asset information, emphasizing the benefits of improved asset management and safer work environments. He also highlighted how the system aids in decision-making regarding real estate acquisition and negotiation, as well as in providing accurate information for environmental health and safety. Peter also discussed the ways in which their platform, built on GIS technology, is utilized to connect with various university departments, academic groups, and students. The platform provides access to public data sets and enhances academic experiences through real-world projects and visual communication. He emphasized the platform's role in meeting students where they are, such as through social media.
Chris advised the audience to start small when getting started with GIS in facilities management and focus on making progress rather than aiming for perfection.
