Started as an RME tech 1. Worked to a tech 3 in 3 years as a shift lead now for a large client on my second building. working toward AMM position next. Work load is increasing tremendously already. My boss is over 5 sites and his 16. I look at them in amazement at the amount of multi tasking that is required. Been considering CPMM courses soon. Its been an adventure for sure

I have an interview in a few days for a franchise restaurant as a Facilities Manager, I have GM experience under my belt, in which I always troubleshot and repaired issues myself before calling anybody. Going to watch these videos, take down bullets, and walk in there prepared!!

Best advice I can give to a facilities manager is learn a basic understanding with the maintenance team on how the building works IE services, your responsible and alot can go wrong so need to monitor it, alot of managers iv worked with don't realise this and they come unstuck. Definitely need atlesst one facilities manager with a technical background. It's not complicated it's a easy job if your organised and have humility the biggest mistake I see now is facilities managers set the bar for their targets too high and don't reach them, set the bar low yes that means goals that you might think are beneath you but set it low and its a goal you can achieve and although its not a goal that will take you where you want to go its a improvement from what you was yesterday. Instrumental steps.

Very well explained you got me thinking maybe in the next 20 years I end up in becoming a facility management as I study sports and recreation management so I hope I end up working in something that is good. I just find that sometimes no matter how small or big the tasks is it can be challenging but we are up to the challenge. What advice would you give me as a college student? it’s hard finding something as a start up everything needs tons of experience it’s seems to be an exciting field but i feel like iam behind I only worked as sales Associate for one month seasonal and been doing volunteering stuff. If you can give me the pros and cons to your perspective that’ll be highly appreciated

That’s awesome! I joined IFMA and got my FMP certification and it was SUPER helpful especially after making the leap from maintenance technician to facilities coordinator/specialist. I am well on my way to being a manager and I couldn’t see doing any other career in the world. It’s a crazy world that totally quenches my ADD thirst and keeps me challenged and never feeling idle.
@Gridl3y4 жыл бұрын
@@tonu115 What type of maintenance tech? Also how long did it take to study up for the FMP? I'm trying to get into commercial HVAC to get a good boots on ground experience while working towards an AS in FM through De Anza College. Did the FMP make an immediate difference when applying for other jobs? Sorry for the crazy amount of questions lol
@tonu1154 жыл бұрын
Mike Means I started out just a general building maintenance technician for a telephone company, switched over to telecom installer/repairs. I then got back into building/office maintenance and then the opportunity to step into managing facilities came up just as I was ready to make the jump up. I was a tech for 7 years (lead for two of those years) The FMP through IFMA was a class so most of the studying was with everyone in class and that class was a Thursday and Friday for four weeks. Took the tests at the end and passed with ease. Not only was the information valuable right after the certification but DURING the class as well. My employer saw an immediate leap in my capability/capacity to think more strategically cross departmental rather than in the silo of my own department. I didn’t/want need to apply for other jobs because after that FMP I got two promotions in the span of 3 years, my employer payed for the class and saw an immediate ROI :)
