I do enjoy working horizontal milling machines and unfortunately missed an opportunity to get one for peanuts but instead the narrow minded owers decided to chop it up for scrap money instead. Lovely work and enjoyed your video 👍

Glad to see you are using that HBM. I loved your rebuild series of fixing it up. I have a G&L. ---Doozer

Thanks Doozer. It's nice to be using it after spending so much time getting it running. How do you like your G&L? Ken

@@hmw-ms3tx Ken- Mine is the baby 25T model. 2-1/2" bar and 4 morse taper. It is still in good shape, and after a ton of cleaning and fixing (like you), I ma just now starting to use it. A DRO is a must to add on. Love yours. I just have not figured out how to add a readout scale to the quill (bar). I will have to study on it. I am tooling up the 4 MT spindle little by little. I need to get my lathe and cylindrical grinder dialed in to make morse taper shanks. Then I have about 6 boring heads to mount. I did score a 20" facing head that was from a Summit (TOS?) machine that I will adapt. Best to you. ----Doozer

The facing head is a good find. I would like to find one for my HBM but they seem to be quite rare. I've now installed read outs on six different machines (sixteen bars in total) and can say the read out bar on the boring spindle (quill) was by far the most challenging one i've installed yet. Keep at it there is always a way. Ken

Nice shop and machines. I do similar work on an old turret lathe with Allied Spade Drills.

How do you like the spade drills? I haven't used one but watching them on KZbin they look pretty effective. I was constantly stopping and starting the feed to break the chip and if I could have let it go the whole depth without interuption it would have been faster. Do the spade drills usually break the chip on their own? Thanks, Ken
@funone8716 Жыл бұрын
@@hmw-ms3tx They are very effective. They give a very nice finish, hole size is accurate. With coolant fed thru the drill, no need to stop for chip clearance. Also no pilot drill, the drill uses the stock to support the blade. Web is greatly reduced for less rubbing in the very center.

That's good to hear. I have a job coming up shortly and I may have to drill a 1.75" diameter hole, 10" deep in 24 pieces of 2.75" TG&P rod. I think I may get my first spade drill for that job. Thanks, Ken

Thanks for some HBM action. Steel prices are on the high side right now, but $2200 bucks for that DOM is crazy.

I know. That's the closest I've come to shitting my pants since I wore diapers. I'm not sure how they say the number with a straight face. Ken

What HBM is this? Interesting to see that the table surface was finished on a planer.

Good one Ken . For interest , i will get a quote on the same material ! 👍

That would be interesting. I've got another job coming up with essentially the same material but the pieces are about 2 feet long and there are 24 of them. My customer is supplying the material and he is looking into DOM vs solid pricing. There may be a spade drill in my near future. Ken

At the turbine shop when you put the massive base in for the new HBM how big was the HBM and what brand was it Old or not yours is very nice you did well with it Just sooooo much effort and time to resurrect
@hmw-ms3tx Жыл бұрын
I don't know how big the HBM was nor the brand. When I was there they had just poured the foundation and the machine was several months away from being delivered. If I had to guess it was likely a 4" spindle machine, judging by the one it was replacing. It was alot of effort to resurrect my HBM, but I got lucky and it ended up being a gem in the rough. Thanks, Ken

Holy crap indeed: $16.90/pound. Marmon?
@hmw-ms3tx Жыл бұрын
Marmon or Mammon? Per pound it's more expensive than a new boring mill. If I could get that price/lb. for my machines I would sell them and retire. Ken
