That maybe why they have the camera rolling to keep each other on there best behavior, or they may have done much editing.😁 just kidding. I could almost smell the wood at they was cutting it, remembering my Dad remodel a old home we lived in.

Loved watching you make the sausages. When you said if people don’t like much spice put less in, I was shaking my head. No no no put more in put more in put more in. When I was watching you fry up to two sausage patties, it made me smile. I had a memory of my great grandmother, watching me fry something up once. She asked me for the spatula and then hit me in the arse with it. She told me you never pressed down on meat or fish while cooking it. When I asked her why she says you’re pushing all the juice out of it helping to dry it out. I have start making my own food in the last several years, including my own sausages, and I have been learning from lots of other different cultures, and how our sausages are so much different. I would like to give you a tip that Irish and British sausage makers do. We add breadcrumb or Rusk to our sausage blends. This works as a great binding agent, and stops the sausages from being too crumbly, without having to seriously compress them like some Italian and Portuguese sausages. It allows it to be loose without it all falling out of the sausage skin. Now in using the breadcrumb and rust, you would use more liquid, but this has a benefit, the overall impact from this to keep the sausage, more moist and flavorful. I made some sausages in the past and failed epically as they were very dry. The flavour was OK but the texture and dryness of it wasn’t good so I’ve had some epic fails. Sausage is definitely a skill and an art that I think the majority of people just don’t understand or appreciate you won’t know it is when you try to do your own.. remember never ever ever press your meat you’re making my great grandmother turnover in her grave lol

@@modernhomesteadalaska You inspired me to go back and re-watch your older videos, before the house had walls, before heat and water etc. When Aaron was still not there full time, no chickens, no garden, no pantry. That darned diesel tank and all the garbage left in the yard and house. The fishing trips, the epic scenery, Caleb's hook in the eye, Wyatt's broken back, and you my friend have gone through and still battle your own health crisis. Take all that in for a minute! I am so very proud and amazed at the strength, joy and grace your family has shown in the best of times and the worst of times of a life well lived! Kneading the dough for 8 minutes then setting to raise for 1 hour…..then before shaping into loaf , KNEAD AGAIN for 3 or so minutes. Then shape for final rise. This will give you a much higher , fluffy and softer textured bread! Hope this is helpful.

Good job guys nicely done since moving into North America. I’ve even seen some people in construction who didn’t do as good job. I am a bricklayer by trade, so I don’t do much in the way of plastering work. But I find it strange the way you guys put up drywall, what we back home would call plasterboard. You speckle and tape it or I believe you called it muddying. That’s something we would not do back in Ireland or the UK. Like you between the framing, we may have a spray foam insulation, or sometimes just a type of fireproof insulation. If the people have money, there is a type of fireproof insulation that looks a little like egg curtains, which works as an insulation, but also a soundproof. After the plasterboard is up, we would not tape it and mud it. The plasterers would come in, and they would put a skim coat of plaster, which would be between three and five mil thick.. this gives an absolute stunning finish to the walls. They are smooth as a baby bum. Another good thing about skim coating. You don’t have to do all that annoying sanding either. Put the benefits of a skim coat. It helps add strength to the wall fills in all the gaps and makes it immensely smooth gives soundproofing and more durability to your wall and you’re not to see cracking either which can sometimes occur when it’s just plasterboard shows up on your painting finish. Now, of course, it’s not necessary to skimcoat your plasterboard it isn’t, but it does give a superior finish to your wall. What can I say in England and Ireland? We like to try and build our homes to last multiple generations. My uncle Pudges cottage is oldest home in our family it’s over 600 years old and still an amazing home. I once had a Canadian ask me what I know about building trying to tease me because I’m Irish. We were standing on the scaffold and a couple of the other Canadian lads were laughing. He wasn’t ready for my response. I pointed out how they were living in wigwam while we were living in castles, and that everything Canadians know about building came from us Europeans otherwise they be still living in a field. He didn’t like that very much. I was tired as a child though you don’t do dish it out if you’re not willing to take it. Hope you don’t mind me pointing out the differences in the building styles.

I love it! Any plaster would work I understand it as the issue is the fire going between the gaps that’s why one would plaster or tape and mud. I love the stories! Your family homes is older than my country! When we went to India and visited castles that were made out of stone 600 plus years old! It was truly eye opening. Here in the lower 48 to live in a 100 year old home is a big deal! lol what a joke that is! In Alaska I don’t think we even have any homes 100 years old!

@@modernhomesteadalaska yeah I know it's not till I came to North America that I really started to appreciate my heritage and history it made me realize how old my culture really is. Now I'm more of a Mason and bricklayer than a plaster but a friend of mine was a plaster. There are many different types of plasters for different situations. The one we used to put on the plasterboard or or drywall we used to refer to it as skim coat. I believe the correct name for it is thistle plaster, but you can also use carlite plaster. Now the thistle plaster dries up quickly so you have to be quick and accurate in its application. The carlite takes longer to dry out but it gives you more working time. Not a plaster so my knowledge is limited Hope this helps.

MAKE YOUR OWN BAKING POWDER UPDATE: 2 parts: cream of tar tar . 1 part baking soda. Many say to also add 1 part of corn starch to this mix as it acts as “ non clumping “ agent. It’s effective however, I’ve not done it. Good tip to remember when baking: baking soda is an alkaline property where powder will have properties of acid. What is baked with these are specific to a balance. Understanding these properties take creative baking to a new high. This is why some recipes call for different leavening procedures. Example: I have an apple cake that requires 2 & 1/2 teaspoons of baking soda but, no powder as the acid in the apple is the counter balance to the soda and BAM! Nicely raised apple cake! Hope this is helpful!

Saying that he goes by code, then shouldn't the fire wall of been installed prior to using the wood stove? Wouldn't it of made more sense to do all this in the summer prior to winter so that you were ready for the cold weather?
@modernhomesteadalaska
@modernhomesteadalaska 11 ай бұрын
Ummm well it was upto code for the fact we had the clearance from combustibles, the code we could have skipped was to tape and mud…… we were never out of code. (Homes was inspected by both bank and insurance to close on it with the stove how it started out) But when you add things IE dry wall in this case, the things you add have a different code. Learn something new every day. As far as summer wouldn’t that be a dream to have the time to get everything done from building outside, animals, garden preserving and being able to finish a 4,300 sq ft home in 3 months while working full time. Yeah it would have been so nice! Like sooo soo sooo nice!

I think you could have done all this stuff in super high speed, carry through with the boredom of the process. We all know how to do drywall…just do it and then show the end result. Tackle the project in the early months when the weather is good…don’t wait for sub zero weather to get creative/supportive. Sad.

Ummm well Aaron has a paying job. It’s more expensive but the pay is higher, I like to say you can have the same quality of life here you have someplace else. Like if you can afford a 2 bed in lower 48 you can afford a 2 bedroom here. Also we hand built our home and it’s been a labor of our blood sweat and tears, if we had to pay someone todo what we did we couldn’t have this home. 4 kids all have significant others that spend a great deal of time at our home. So food wise I feed 6-8 people 3 times a day most days and that’s about to go up as a family member is moving in with us. And our oldest is not part of our channel. He is off at collage and lives on his own, he is 24 and an adult/child. lol
