I’ve never thought of it as getting paid to live in Alaska. When they first started the dividend a good majority of people working on the pipeline were from oil producing states like Texas because they had the needed job skills. The problem was they were taking those salaries and spending them in their own states and all that revenue was just flowing out of the state that was producing it. So the administration at the time took a portion of the profits and invested it, earmarking that as a dividend to the residents to compensate for the resources flowing out and ensuring that a portion of that revenue remained in the state. I’ve always admired their foresight in doing that!

I worked in the oil field and along the pipeline over thirty years as a resident starting in 1979. I always take the view that by not having these people living in Alaska we don’t have to build roads and schools for them and their kids. Also the PFD didn’t start until the early 1980s when most of the pipeline construction workers left. Very few of the people I worked with lived out of state and most of them that did were just setting up a home in the lower 48 a few years before they retired.

Oh man! It’s like a bonus not a living wage. I hope it helps those who are just curious to understand it.

@@modernhomesteadalaska yes there are so many questions like this about living here. Also so many misunderstandings. I feel ppl have no idea how different it is living here. It is so unique and not for everyone. I’ve seen ppl come and go. The ones that stay have truly embraced what it means to be Alaskans💚 god bless you and the family.

I live in Michigan and going into winter I try to stockpile food also. I bought 55 gallon drums with lids that lock that I can pour all the food in each area that it's needed. I think I would have a heart attack if our hay for the horse was that expensive.

It’s very expense here! Love the 55 gal drums that how we did it in Colorado

Enjoyed watching your video first time finding you. I have a channel also and I’ve raised Rabbits for many years but I was just gonna give you one bit of advice. Raabits have their young on day 3031 if you put the nest box in on day 27 they won’t poop and pee in it they’ll just make a nest.😁 good luck look forward to videos

"Welcome to Alaska, here's $1000!" I still get asked about the PFD even though I've never gotten one. It seems to be the first question folks ask when they find out you've spent any amount of time in Alaska lol.
@modernhomesteadalaska2 ай бұрын
Exactly! It is I think the most asked question no matter who it is to

My father always made wooden feed boxes for the rabbits so they had something extra to gnaw on because rabbits teeth keep growing and that helps them to trim them back.

So smart I even give them stocks sometimes too to chew on

Rabbits will use a litter box easily for easy clean up . They will do it by nature, that why they use the nesting boxes so if you put in a small type litter tray for them with a nesting box that should help. Rabbits are the easiest to raise. Oh they also love for a snack ..... Bread lol it also helps put on extra fat for the winter months to help keep them warm. I used to Run a Resort and we had hundreds of Rabbits, it was a main attraction for ppl that came to stay in our cabins. So we kept lots of can of old bread from the bread store in cans everywhere for the Rabbits and Deer and a occasional Bear lol
