Will, this video meant a lot to me. I went on my first dive at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town South-Africa with big sharks. I was terrified. There was one quote I kept on repeating to myself. "The only place that fear can exist is in our thoughts of the future. It is a product of our imagination, causing us to fear things that do not at present and may not ever exist. That is near insanity. Do not misunderstand me danger is very real but fear is a choice.” Sound familiar. Thanks for this video it made my day.

@@MaggiesDIY scuba diving has to be one of the most awesome experiences if you get to go to the right place with the right conditions. It can be frightening but getting certified before you jump onto open water will definitely help your fear of equipment failure and having a good briefing about any dangerous animals is the best way to quell any fears of the animals you'll see down there. Communicating honestly will get you through allot of the troubles you might find.

I was always scared of the ocean, swimming and not knowing what was going on in the great blue depth beneath you. So then I decided to go snorkling. Took me a few hours to feel comfortable breathing through a tube but after a while I got the hang of it and I immediatly loved how calming it was once you put your head under water you're sealed off all sound are muffled and all you hear is your own breathing. Still scared of the depths I avoided the blue holes where I couldnt see the ground. I decided to learn scuba diving. after a few swimming pool lessons I kinda got the hang of it and I was gonna make an openwater dive. Turned out, that big blue depth I was always to afraid of wasnt even that bad. Scuba diving is now my favourite thing to do. I turned my fear into something I love. Recently had my first encounter with a Whale shark, and it was the best thing of my life.

Freek Vonk good for you!!..I love the beach but diving deeply has always been my primal fear since childhood, probably I have watched too many cartoons like tom and jerry or looney tunes were scenes like a character getting dropped off to the water and a cartoon shark with its dorsal fin started to appear and attack him, not to mention movies like Jaws and Titanic or the biblical story of Jonah intensified my uneasiness about the deep.. I even had experienced of getting drowned or almost being swept away by reap tides and currents which was ultimately terrifying!.. im planning as well to take my fear off and start to sum my courage up to learn how to swim because I tend to feel that I get to miss out whenever I travel and it's also a useful survival skill , you have inspired me further to not take my fears and my past to control on what im capable of doing better as of this moment. thank you for sharing though.. a little more motivation is what I need to dive even more deeply

Hello Will Smith, I had the same fear as you for most of my life. For me, it all started as a young child when I saw the movie Jaws at the neighbors house. Then several years ago, I had a friend ask me to go on a SCUBA diving trip and I said no. The same friend asked me again the following year and I thought to myself if I keep saying no, the invitations will stop. So I decided to go! My first time in the pool with all my gear on was probably the most stressful. I only stayed underwater for maybe 10 seconds and then told my instructor I couldn't breath. Later that same day we did our fist dive in the ocean and I felt like a champion. During the rest of my week, I ended up completing my open water class, advanced open water class, and an air nitrox course! It felt amazing to conquer a fear that I carried with me for so long. I hope you felt the same accomplishment after your dive. Did you end up doing more dives after this? Did you get over your fear? I hope so!
